Dan Sachs is professor of entrepreneurship, hospitality management, and service leadership at DePaul University and president of Meerkat Restaurant Advisory, an A-list restaurant advisory group. From 1999–2015, he owned the Bin36 restaurant group, where he developed and operated several wine-focused restaurants. He has worked with a variety of famous restaurateurs including Danny Meyer, Drew Nieporent, and Paul Bartolotta. He has an AB from Harvard College and a master’s degree from the Parisian culinary school École de Cuisine La Varenne. He lives in Chicago, IL.Janet Scott is a writer and the owner of The Write Place, a corporate communication and academic support company. A great book for students of business with lessons that extend well beyond the restaurant and hospitality industries. The author's access to business leaders with insights on customer service is invaluable. The extensions of those lessons into our own experiences with customer service organizations, with investing in customer service enterprises (my profession) and life (see Zappos family values) make this book a must read.

Really appreciate the author’s approach in discussing how different companies deliver great customer service and how they get their employees’ buy-in. I thought he did a great job of offering different perspectives (the Evangelists, the Transformers, and the Pragmatists) with relevant stories demonstrating how companies, old and new, are exhibiting great customer service supported by a focused and aligned workforce. Very compelling!

The authors have done an excellent job of analyzing and presenting the core beliefs that create great customer service and thus great and sustainable businesses. By talking to people in companies both large and small and in a wide range of businesses, they have brought into focus the attitudes and approaches to customer service that have allowed small companies to grow into powerhouses that have stood the test of time. It is one thing to create a business that grows for a year or two. It is another thing entirely to create a business that thrives and grows for many decades. This is a feat that is as rare as it is difficult. The authors do a great job of drilling down to discover what makes possible this nearly impossible feat. It is well worth the read for anyone who owns a business or wants to make a valuable contribution to the business in which he works.

This book is full of practical advice about creating a culture of engagement between leaders, employees, and customers. The author does a great job at teasing apart tactical ways that a number of successful leaders are able to create a culture of engagement, vitality, and growth. Interestingly, the industy-diverse leaders don't all take the same tact, which is a reassuring message - that a positive culture comes from many and varied means, and from a multitude of styles. The leaders have each created an environment where employees care about the work they do, care about each other, and care about the fate of the organization. I like how the interviews the author conducts address not only why but HOW this type of culture is created. Easy to read, and a high recommend!!

Really useful book. We hear so much about the importance of building culture, meaning, mission, values into our workplaces, and most leaders won't argue with that, many will pay lip service to it daily. But where most struggle is the how to. Daniel Sachs gives us a books worth of how to, in the voice of the leaders who have done it, acknowledge the messy complexity of it, and are crystal clear about the effort it requires. Practical, inspirational - I highlighted loads and took away many, many great ideas.

About the Author

After receiving a fine arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley and completing two years of graduate work in design at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ruth Heller (1923-2004) began her career designing wrapping paper, cocktail napkins, greeting cards, and coloring books. After five years of rejection and one complete revision, Heller's first book, Chickens Aren't the Only Ones, about egg-laying animals, was published in 1981. It was so successful that the sequel, and second book to be published, Animals Born Alive And Well (1982), about mammals, quickly followed. In 1983 and 1984, her third and fourth titles, The Reason For A Flower (about plants that have seeds and flowers) and Plants That Never Ever Bloom (about plants that do not) were published.She then began work on a collection of six books, the How To Hide series on camouflage and the magic of this phenomenon in nature, which covered the entire animal kingdom -- insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and sea creatures. The next collection of books became a five-volume series on parts of speech: A Cache of Jewels and Other Collective Nouns; Kites Sail High: A Book About Verbs; Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives; Merry-Go-Round: A Book About Nouns; and Up, Up and Away: A Book About Adverbs. She also wrote and illustrated the unique and fascinating book Color, a charming and instructive guide to how art goes through the four color printing process.Among the notable people who have had an influence on Heller's writing have been: Ogden Nash, Gilbert and Sullivan, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, and Dr. Seuss. Heller says of her work, "All my books are nonfiction picture books in rhyme. As a science teacher, I could not be happier. This book uses engaging artwork along with rhyming text to explain that more than chickens lay eggs. The book includes birds, reptiles, dinos, amphibians, fish, snails, octopi, spiders, insects, and monotremes. I am so thrilled that a book easily readable in preschool contains such clear information and a lot to discuss and so many projects could connect to this. The book would be great for units covering: Easter, spring, babies, life cycles, animals, etc.Overall, buy the paperback or hardcover, not the library binding as it cuts off the word caterpillar in the spine.BTW, I bought this book without realizing that I already own a number of her books. I liked her camouflage books too.

I love, love, love this book. As a preschool director, I had many science-based projects set up for different times of year. I kept this book with a collection of eggs (a finch egg, chicken, duck, goose and emu egg... and some spent snake casings) After reading the book, I would have a teacher gently show the children the different eggs for comparison. The illustrations in the book are accurate, and the text has a gently rhyming cadence to it. The underlying science is there, as well.

This is a lovely book that can be appreciated by children of varying ages. I love that it makes a non-fiction subject lively and playful!However, I ordered this paperback copy to replace a much older, worn copy of the same book. The new copy lacks the deep, vibrant colors of the original. The illustrations look faded and washed out in comparison. That's disappointing!

I purchased this and the companion book, The Reason for a Flower, years ago when my daughter was small. We very much enjoyed it together. I must admit hearing her casually use the word "oviparous" as a toddler did make me smile. I am looking forward to enjoying this lively prose and these wonderful illustrations again with my grandson. Thank you, Ruth Heller and Amazon.

Loved this book and his style of writing and the author beautifully and articulately breaks down the incredibly comprehensive history, along with the objective functions on the brain, coupled with the subjective interpretations and experiences of many therapy participants and not only does he provide this detailed information and this book is so perfectly timed, not to mention culturally long overdue and these substances evoke powerful lasting experiences among subjects that is impossible to ignore but somehow we have done so for half a decade and i believe this book will open some minds up as we proceed to remove the stigma and misconceptions of these important therapeutic options that have been wrongly removed from access to the common men and women who need them and anyone with an open mind will enjoy this book both as entertainment and as education and the overarching theme of this book is that being positive is a choice, and that’s easily enough to understand and along the way, though, the author makes it clear that it’s the small things (like eating right, and distancing one’s self from excessive negativity) that will do the most good and the author did a great job in giving a detailed explanation on the fundamentals of self-mind control and to practical activities you can do to enhance and improve your positive outlook in life.

I know that Explode the code has been a round for a while. But to me this is new as my oldest is in Kindergarten now.I was unsure which book would be appropriate for him and I guessed that 3 would be the right one for him. I was right. I took a picture of the explode the code series content so you too - new parent- know what is in each book. I am not sure why the specifics of the contents of the book is not written on the product description.I am homeschooling and we have a very nice phonics program. However, it is nice to have extra practice that includes some writing and other little activities already there for me to pick through and for my child to complete. I think parents with kids struggling in school or looking for summer practice could also benefit of a workbook like this one.The pages are of decent quality. The child can erase a few times without ripping the page. All the pictures are black and white. In some activities the pictures will help kids know which word they are looking for. The book includes activities where the child has to read the words to match a picture or read a little sentence. There are explanations written in simple language for the kids. For example here's a quote: "If a little word ends in y, the y says /Ä«/."I bought a "used" workbook from one of the vendors. It doesn't look used to me. I did pick one that was described as excellent condition and I'm very happy with the purchase.

These books were recommended by my daughter's first grade teacher b/c she thought my daughter would enjoy learning the "rules" behind spelling. It's really hard to judge where to start w/ these books. I bought this one, thinking it might be a little advanced for my daughter and it was WAY TOO EASY. I'm going to try to skip to book 5 or 6 and see if that works better.I think this is probably a good series based on teacher and other reviewer recommendations, but they really need more details on how to pick the level.

We had been doing a different phonics curriculum (Spell to Write and Read), which was perfect for one of my children, but one of my kids was struggling to remember the various rules (like silent e's and long vowels) the way SWR presents them (kind of...haphazardly). We needed more regimented structure and ridiculous amounts of repetition to boost his confidence. So we jumped right in to this book for my 1st grader and (remedial) 2nd grader without doing any of the others in the series.My kids love:1. The silly sentences2. The "tricky" choose-the-right-word sections3. That they can jump right in and do pages without my help.I love:1. That they can jump right in and do pages without my help.2. The VERY methodical approach and plentiful repetition. My struggling son really needs the repetition, but he gets annoyed and discouraged when I remind him of the same things over and over. He seems to accept the repetition from the workbook more happily than from me. My not-struggling daughter doesn't really need the reading repetition, but she thinks the activities are pretty fun, and she benefits from the writing practice.3. The pictures of the other levels on the back of the book. My kids are stoked to "move up a level" when they're done with this book.I DON'T love:1. That there's no cursive option. We have been doing cursive since age 4 and love it, but there are unfortunately no phonics workbooks available that use cursive.2. That some phonics rules are kind of loose. SWR (which is like the Spalding method or Writing Road to Reading method) is amazing at being thorough and closing all those dumb English loopholes, and this is a bit less intensive. But it's working for us right now.

After years struggling to teach my daughter to read, without much luck, we were introduced to the Explode the Code book series by her preschool teacher. The books singlehandedly turned her into a reader and she was engaged and amused by the methods used by the author to get there. This is a fun, painless, and effective way to master phonics and gain confidence.

Simply the best language/phonics book for young kid. I found out a little late about this book, so based on my kids reading abilities I start with Explode the code(ETC) 3. My daughter reminds me to sit with her to do atleast 1 Lesson everyday. I am usually very lazy to write reviews and take time to do it. But I am really very thankful to the makers of this product and currently back at Amazon for buying further version. I am on the fence to buy ETC 1 and 2 as well, definetely 4 and above for sure. If in doubt, I would say just buy one and not the whole series until you are really sure, thats the way I go. For now, I am having difficulty to make my kid stop at one lesson everyday. I dont believe in rushing the book in 1 day. Practice makes perfect. I like the way the lessons are structured as well. Before this I used to purchase kumon workbooks for my kids, but I guess I will stop that, as kumon is colorful but not result oriented compared to ETC, just my honest opinion.

We absolutely love Explode the Code and have recently started using Beyond the Code as well. As a homeschooling mom of six who is homeschooled for 15 years now and run a university-model school, I highly recommend these consumable workbooks, which the kids actually enjoy.

Use them in remedial reading, but will work in kindergarten and preschool, as well as home school. Have individual letter sounds, word examples and other activities.

This whole series is absolutely fabulous for my students with autism. It gives the supports they need for independent practice...little teacher support is required for most of my students. I am using this extensively in my sub separate classroom. Higher students I have had over the years blow right through it...too easy for them.

As a beginner, I felt this was the best book on the subject that I have purchased. The instructions were detailed but not verbose and the demonstrations were very easy to follow.I especially liked that the designs were not some mad max design that took four years of college and 42 hours to complete. You can both finish them and not keep them under glass after you have. Did I like every design? No, but I didn't expect to, this is the authors esthetic, not mine. However, most of the style elements could be easily swapped out if you you cared to.The only problem I had with the book was the hanging method of 'Whispering Bamboo'. A head pin could have been placed in the hole of the bead and a simple loop made to allievated the stress of hanging the piece from one of the cords. This has already altered the drape of the piece and will certainly affect the longevity.

Good instructions for a beginner. I haven't figured out some of the notations for bead sizes. Will probably only use a couple of patters out of this book - which seems to be the case with books like this. But overall I'm glad I bought this book.

The book was in excellent condition. Great patterns for micro-macrame.

Not as many interesting designs, but there are a few that I will probably try to make. A lot of it is pretty unexceptional.

It is a gut-retching and face-slapping, eye-widing book book we all need to read to keep this from happening again (?), expanding...esp with the White House we have now. This White House says they want to kill all the family of terrorist too, women and children too, what kind of torture would they use if they could? This really frightens me.

An excellent book for anyone with an interest in the important and timely issues of detainee treatment and counter-terrorism policy. The author contributes a great deal to the recent scholarship of the GWOT by viewing U.S. detainee policy through a theoretical lens. Rather than focusing on what happened or why these things were done, the author presents a powerful argument about HOW the U.S. government came to adopt the policy and practices put in place during the GWOT. This informs the already rich legal, ethical, and strategic debate on these issues, while helping us to think critically about national security policy. What are the norms that shape individual, organization, and state behavior? Where do they come from and how do they change? What is the role of individual actors in shaping a system? The book remains highly readable while still challenging the reader. Very well researched, written, and argued. Highly recommended!
