At first I tried the Kaplan, Barron's and Princeton Review books, but this by far is the best book if you want to do well. You will probably need to buy Barron's GRE exam book to get basic review of math or the Kaplan GRE exam workbook if you are a little rusty. But after reviewing these books, definitely get this one. I have gone over this book for the past four weeks and my math skills have dramatically improved. The other brands may get you to an average score but this book will definitely get you scoring highly (700+). I took a practice test last week and did very poorly and in just a week of intense review of this book (timing myself rather than just going through the book slowly to understand the concepts) my score has gone up by 100 points! I hope to keep improving since I have yet to master every concept in this book, but I believe that with each concept I master my score will definitely improve. --greyay

To review for the math section of the GRE, I used this book as well as the Cliffsnotes Math Review for Standardized Tests, and the math review sections of the Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's general GRE review books.If I had to buy review materials again, I would purchase this book over the Cliffnotes book (although both were excellent) because it contains a few more math concepts and provides more challenging problems. In addition, I would purchase one of the general books in order to learn a few tricks or shortcuts for the math section, as this book contains how to do math problems "the long way".This book will give you the most thorough review of math concepts for the GRE. I was able to finish it in a month studying about three hours per day. The problems require you to think critically about the approach you want to take. I would say over half of them would be considered "hard" questions on the GRE.A hint for using this book: the introductory discussion about the topic in the beginning of each section will give you a starting point, but the real meat of the lesson is the explanations of each problem in the back of the chapter. The majority of my study time was spent analyzing the different approaches they showed in the answer key. If you only read the concept summary in the beginning, you are missing most of the lesson!If you are shooting for a score in the 85th percentile or above, I'd recommend this book. If below, I'd stick with Cliffnotes Math Review--this book will just frustrate you.

I bought this book as one of my final purchases for my GRE prep. It had been very highly rated and I needed a more intensive math review after purchasing GRE for Dummies, Cracking the GRE by Princeton and the Barrons 800 High Frequency Word List. The fact that the book separates the question levels of difficult is one of the better aspects of the book. The sheer number of questions to practice with is also very helpful.However, there are still numerous flaws that left me unsatisfied. I found the reviews of many concepts to be lackluster at best, giving questions in the medium or hard sections with no preemptive preparation in the review part of the section. Also, I found numerous questions to be tediously full of problems that need more time to work on than should be necessary for a GRE question. Also, I found the types of questions themselves, while helpful to concept practice, not at all written in the same manner as the GRE questions you can typically find in the PowerPrep or in a Princeton book.The math section on the GRE is all about tricks, traps and simple ways to solve problems. Many solutions offered in the answer sections provide complex if not completely unnecessary solutions - adding extra variables where no variable really need be added, for example. They show complex ways of solving QC problems with a D answer that need only basic logic to prove as a D.Lastly, I feel a math book for the GRE should be teaching you how to do the least amount of math in your 45 minutes and how to immediately spot a trap. This book only minimally mentions traps and tips to find them.

I purchased this book because of the excellent reviews, and after a week of using it, I understood the hype.To provide a bit of a back story, I took the GRE in 2011 using a Kaplan prep book, which I admit I thumbed through only a bit. I was a junior in college and took the GRE without a real motivating factor. I took it because I thought I should. My approach that year was the approach of many: how do I cheat the system? My lack of motivation and seriousness resulted in a less than stellar quant score. Today, two years later, I planned to actually RELEARN math principals. No "mastering" the test, I planned to master math as best I could.As the author suggests, this book has become my math bible over the past month. While I am keeping my expectations realistic (I don't expect to obtain a perfect quat score), I feel MUCH better prepared and confident to answer many of the questions the test will throw at me tomorrow afternoon. I bought this book along with the ETS guide, and the 5lb book of GRE practice problems. I have barely touched the other two (except to review the verbal and writing sections). This book has followed me to work, to the library, to the coffee shop, to my boyfriends... Here are some pros and cons about this book:Pros:- Sections by subject (e.g. geometry, coordinate geometry, exponents and roots, averages)- Each section has a comprehensive subject review written in a "need to know" and concise manner- Each section has formulas (e.g. circumstance, distance of a line, slope) in bold you can easily compile and memorize.- Each practice question's solution is explained in depth, and you will quickly learn that this book teaches you UNIVERSAL approaches to a verity of questions. You see that the GRE is much more about the approaches and skills you use to solve a problem, rather than very specific math knowledge.Cons:- You will need to warm up to the author's explanation of answers. If you haven't done math in awhile, you will likely have to refresh on common principals such as simplify and factoring equations. At first you might feel lost when reading answer explanations, and if you're like me, you may have to read them 5-10 times before you understand the logic. It is not uncommon for the author to leave out 1 or more steps. Don't worry, you will quickly learn the author's logic and this problem improves.Overall, excellent book that I plan to recommend to future GRE-ers!

This guide is completely straightforward and comprehensive without being jargon-y. When I first became a homeowner with a yard, I wanted to begin gardening and had no idea where to start. Every book and website I looked at explained things in terms I could not comprehend. It seemed so complicated to me that I abandoned the idea of ever having a flourishing garden. After reading this book, I feel like gardening is something I can totally do. It explains everything in a completely easy to understand way, and includes step-by-step tips that are easy to follow. It covers everything from trees to flowers to vegetables. The photos are also excellent, and there are a lot of them on every page. This book would be a great choice for anyone who wants to begin gardening, and it would also be a very nice housewarming gift.

I bought my first house and didn't know anything about gardening. This book was great! My garden is still a work in progress and I went from maybe a beginner to an advanced beginner- but this book helped me have a bit of confidence to get out there and try! Great for people who have no idea what they are doing :)

This is perfect! This outlines step by step instructions with photos, a plus. Explains each gardening tool, fertilizer, etc. It has the basics on different plants..flowers, veggies, bushes, etc. It doesn't go into depth on these subjects. However this is exactly what I was looking for. I especially like the glossary of gardening terms, and the chart of plants in back. It lists all plants mentioned in the book with crucial information including how much sun is needed, zone, and amount of water needed. It's perfect for adolescents too. I would highly recommend to an absolute beginner. May not be worth it to someone who has basic gardening experience.

Bought as a gift for a new gardener, however I will be ordering another for myself! I like the easy to use layout and "how to" sections for common gardening/yard issues; i.e. bald spots in lawn or improve soil or glossary terms (see book pics) Recommended for any gardener of any level, great resource guide.

I have found this book very helpful. The introduction, gardening decoded, and gardening basics section were well-written and very useful. The format of the sections in this book are great. Each section tells you what you need, steps to plant, and tips for success. I also bough the Beginner's Guide to Gardening: Basic Techniques, and I like that book also, but this one is more useful because it gives clear, actionable steps with great illustrations and pictures. I've been planting my beds over the last couple of months, and I'm frequently referencing this book.

Great pictures. Put together so that each section listed in the table of contents can stand independently which is helpful when you need it as a quick reference.

Love this book got to reading and could not put it down very educational and easy reading!

A delightful book. I must confess I have fished all the same places, know all the names he drops and share his devotion to the magic of fly fishing and clean, moving waters. Some of his stuff is just too much for me but nobody questions his abilities so my opinion is not worth much. But we ARE on the same wave length when it comes to the waters he mentions, the fish he respects and the terrific characters he has known and fished with.Been there.

The writing ranks with the best of angling literature. We took this book with us on an extended bicycle camping tour of Hokkaido and read it aloud in the evenings. In a similar vein as Roderick Haig-Brown, McGuane is one of those rare angling authors who is able to write about elite angling experiences without coming off as elitist. Chalk stream in England, saltwater flats, west coast salmon and more, the stories in the volume describe in fluid prose some of the best the fly-angling life has to offer. Belongs on every serious fisherman's shelf.

Thomas McGuane is a fantastic writer but his use of $20 words gets in the way of a book that is just stories about fishing trips. I enjoyed the book but not as much as I have other similar authors.

Rather than give you a "macro" review, I cover my favorite chapters of this book in sort of a micro-review fashion:Back in Ireland - is as pointed and sharp as a tack. The story is as much about a time as it is about a place. McGuane reminds us that the intersection of time and space is unique as a snowflake hitting the warm ground.Twlight in the Buffalo Paddock - McGuane takes us into a seemingly sterile (e.g., there's no fish in those casting ponds) and off-beat, urban setting in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. He points out the art as well as the pointlessness of false casting to plastic-ringed targets at a time when fly fishing is being passed up by faster, more extreme sports like skateboarding and BMX. But even in this setting, McGuane finds his perfect moment. It's a moment that draws many fly anglers back to their sport: "The ponds have gone silver. The emptiness around the few members who remain seems to make their casting more singular, more eloquent."Henry's Fork - The author fishes the Henry's Fork of the Snake River with guide Mike Lawson. The essay turns into a bit of a rant with McGuane calling Idaho's Department of Fish and Game to the carpet. And like metaphoric bad-dog, rubbing their nose in a big pile of silt they left in the river.World-Record Dinner - reads like a minor treatise on fly fishing the flats for mutton snapper. The mutton snapper as McGuane describes it -"not at all handsome, with its large and vacant-looking head" - earns more than respect - "difficult to deceive and very spooky" as an angler's quarry.The Sea-Run Fish - is the most sharply pointed satire of the book, with a laser-like focus on an entire ontology of misdirected fly anglers. McGuane breaks them down into: The Rich, Old and New, Corporate Groups, Time Sharers, Spongers (which he claims membership to), and The Poacher. With some amount of after thought, he includes Steelheaders ("The first group, distinctly, are the original California steelheaders emanating from the Bay Area."), lodge denizens, and the roaming sponge.I loved his take on fishing lodges: "The lodge has the unenviable job of maintaining living facilities, waterborne transport, and guides, as well as some level of communications and emergency medical capability in remote places. The logistics underlying this can resemble what in military parlance is called a task force, but it enables one to arrive with clothes and tackle only, and depart with no responsibilities for maintenance and other ordeals of the off-season, a real luxury. The downside is that it's not cheap and you never know who you'll be bunking with.... and if you travel long enough to so-called destination angling, you will meet some unparalleled Twinkies and monsters."I could go on citing stories and pulling quotes from this book. But, instead I'll finish with 3 words of advice - get his book.

Lovers of fishing and outdoors essays will enjoy this book. While McGuane doesn't have the laid-back humor of Gierach, he has a great eye for detail and his prose immerses you into his scenes.As an example, here's an excerpt I like from a story about fishing in early spring:"This was a wonderful time to find yourself astream. You didn't bump into experts. You didn't bump into anybody. You could own this place in your thoughts as completely as a Hudson Bay trapper. The strangely human killdeer were all over the place, human in that their breeding activities were accompanied by screaming fights and continuous loud bickering. When they came in for a landing, their wings set in a quiet glide while their legs ran frantically in midair. The trees in the slower bends were in a state of pick-up sticks destruction from the activity of beavers. A kingfisher flew over my head with a trout hanging from its bill. I came around a bend without alerting three more geese, floating in a backwater, sound asleep with their heads under their wings. I decided not to wake them. I ended my day right there."Great cure for cabin fever, and very rereadable.

If you both like to read and like to fish, this is a book that must be on your shelves, and in your backpack. It is a truly lyrical book about the mysterious, I might almost say mystical, sport of angling. McGuane's literary output over a lifetime has been consistently excellent, with such classics as the early, Florida-centric Ninety-Two in the Shade, and Panama. And then came the later, Montana-centric classics of Nobody's Angel and the Bushwahcked Piano. But The Longest Silence is in a class of its own: a loving, measured and extremely nuanced paean to the great meditative and athletic sport that fishing is. A great pairing for this book is Norman Maclean's A River runs through It. These are guy books, mostly, and perfect for guy book clubs. And they are perfect for readers of The Garden Interior, too, because they have something interesting in common. Fishing is not really about catching a fish, of course, except in a most primitive and simplistic sense; it is about the interior life of the fisherman and what is going on in his heart and mind during the long silences between intermittent bouts of angling action. In just the same way, gardening is about the interior life of the gardener more than it is about a trophy flower or fresh tomatoes on the table. McGuane is on our wavelength, as you will see from the first page of this lyrically beautiful book of thirty-some essays written over thirty years about fishing all over the world. You will be hooked.

I was born and raised within sight of Glacier National Park and as I write this I can look to the east and see the snow covered peaks in Glacier. George Ostrom was a household name during the years I grew up in Whitefish, Montana. He was involved in so many aspects of the daily goings on of the Flathead valley. I have read this book innumerable times and each time it moves me to tears of laughter, tears of joy and sentiment. Yes, I am an old softie but I would still recommend a box of kleenex be kept close at hand. It matters not if you are a local, have been to Glacier and seen it's splendor yourself or if you are an avid reader of our nations national parks and wilderness histories, this book will move you as few have done before. You will see in photographs places most of us will never see. The narrative takes the book from an offering of photographic splendor to a book of incomparable beauty and impact. It is so evident that there is a deep emotional and sentimental connection between the author and Glacier National Park. Read it... you will enjoy the majesty and beauty of Glacier presented by a master!!

Nice compilation. Very basic, blocked chords and such, also contains tabs for guitar. Keys are a little low, so I just pushed myself where it was comfortable. Good for beginners or using for text reference.

This is an excellent source of patriotic songs by various authors and gives e enough time to wade through the variation in chords by July Fourth. For those who don't know that the hymn "Eternal Father strong to save" has been used as a hymn for several other organizations, not just the military--you can oogle or Bing the title to find variations of the words.

This book is geared more toward vocalists than pianists, but I do believe that a pianist would enjoy using these songs to create arrangements. Overall, a great book to add to your collection.

...I would invest in hard copy of this Dummies book, as there are timeline checklists but my old eyes cannot read them on my Kindle. Further, obviously one cannot actually utilize the checklists.That being said, I just realized that it is NOT the fault of the writer, so changed from 3 stars to 4.I will probably order this, or some other wedding planning type of book, in hard copy.As for a book review, it was a great guideline for those of us who cannot - or do not want to - hire a wedding planner. It includes suggestions for favors, invitations, timelines (as mentioned before), reminders for what will be needed to obtain licenses. In short, the myriad things one needs to have, or at least take into consideration, when planning a wedding.

I saw this book before I got enagaged and knew it had some great points after previewing it. Once I got enagaged it was the first wedding planning purchase I made. This book offers real solutions and advice to all aspects of the wedding. It gives great insight on how to have a great and beautiful wedding and not break the bank at the same time. It includes lots of resources (websites especially) to refer to if you are interested. Also, it does a great job of covering minor and major aspects to the wedding. I enjoyed the section they had on flowers (explaining which ones are least expensive, breking them down by season etc.).

This book has help my husband and myself so much. Everyone has a image in there head for your wedding stop all that buy reading this book. Need help coming up with a realistic budget based on your incomes this book has it too!!

There is a lot of useful practical information about how to use Instagram in this book and for that reason I like it - 4 stars. I would have rated it a 5 and loved it if it did not contain erroneous legal information pertaining to the FTC in the USA and by being a bit pie in the sky. (I will provide details later.) Also I have taken a workshop on using Instagram for your business and it taught a LOT LESS than this book so for the price I recommend buying this book to learn from as a couple of the main things I learned in the workshop were explained better in more detail in INSTASTYLE.Certain people will feel this book will tell them all they need to know to become a new Instagran INFLUENCER who works seven days a week creating content and being provided free travel accommodations, meals, and clothing. The book's author is an Influencer who focuses on "lifestyle" which for her is fashion, travel, and eating in restaurants, she goes by the name Tezza and looks like a professional model, is six feet tall, has beautiful face and hair, and has a lean body that looks great in fashion clothes.There are short four page sections to tell how some other Instagram Influencers run their account, their main focus is in each of these categories: travel, food photographed at home, beauty, family (of toddlers and babies), and "health and fitness" by a mother of young children, and interior design and one who does only "flat lays" of products.If you know nothing about Instgram, nothing about photography basics, and nothing about filters and analytics then this book tells a lot that will educate you. I applaud all this information. There a ton of full color photos throughout the book and the paper is thick and nice. This is a DK publication, if you are familiar with their high quality photograph-filled books, this is the same great quality.There are some contradictions and confusing points. The book starts off saying to have your Instgram account show the life you are actually living. On the next page (61) Tezza states she works seven days a week and is constantly brainstorming to find new ideas of things to do in order to create new content. Later it says to find locations good for photo shoots then go do the photo shoot, to me that is not photographing your life as you live it, it is intentionall doing things to get a photo, those are two very different things, one is an authentic life experience being documented and the other is done only for the photo to be published. It is also recommended that we look for travel to do in order to keep our content fresh and active. One of the highlighted Instagrammers says her three year old has already traveled to 25 counties. There is a mention of free hotel lodging in five star hotels. Yet there is not much said about how to achieve these things and readers may think that everyone can make a full-time living from being an Influencer. Free clothes and makeup are fun but cash money is needed to pay the electricity bill (and everything else for basic survival).It is recommended to hire professional photographers to do the photo shoots of things such as wearing an outfit while walking on a city street or to shoot you driving in a convertible on a cliff hugging road. On page 115 it says the Influencer uses a certain camera, I looked it up online and saw the retail is $6K.There is no financial information here to keep it real, not every woman who wants to wear trendy outfits, eat in expensive restaurants, and travel the world is going to be able to afford a camera like that or to hire a professional photographer or to even buy these outfits or pay for those meals. The book lacks information about which parts of what is shown in the Instagram photos was given for free versus paid for. The only financial information about what an Influencer may get paid is on page 174 where it says charge 1% of your follower count per post or $100 for every 10K followers you have.I was bothered by the incorrect legal advice given on page 175 regarding the United States of America's FTC (Federal Trade Commission). In a discussion of how to disclose that the item or service was paid for or the product was given in exchange for a post, Tezza wrote that she is not a lawyer but the advice she gives is incorrect which I verified by a two second Internet search in which I found the FTC document "The FTC's Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking". If you want accurate info go read that online document. The hashtag idea Tezza suggests is not allowed per the clear information given in the FTC document. There must be a clear statement visible to the viewer without clicking to view more with the "more" button. (Note that this book was received by me as part of the Amazon Vine reviewer program which is stated by Amazon right at the top of this review to meet the FTC's requirement. I was not paid to write this review or to post about it anywhere else on the Internet and am allowed to be honest in my review.)The rest of the book is useful although people wanting to focus on content in other areas will have to be creative about their own direction and topics. For example if you want to post about food you make you would use your imagination and might choose to show cooking in process photos, finished foods, cookbooks you are reading, et cetera. If you are an artist you would show ideas, works in process, finished projects and art show or sales of your artwork posts. Love Tezza and I pre-ordered it as soon as it was released.The cover resembles an instagram feed and the aesthetic is perfect so you can use it as table decor.The negatives to the book are that it is basic and the information vague. I just think after reading so many free articles online and developing the basic knowledge of social media, that everything with in the book seemed pretty standard to the articles.For instance, when you flip through the book, imagine a children's book with little writing and loads of pictures. I was expecting in depth social media gold, but instead found a pretty layout of information I already knew.However, if you are new to social media or have little knowledge on the matter, I recommend the book to help set you on a path.Overall, I enjoy having book and it's nice to have everything all in one place, but I don't think it is a necessity. Non-expensive table decor as well!

I loved this book and read every single word of it. I was actually taking a very expensive Instagram course at the same time I started this book, and I found more information in this book than in the course. Amazing. She actually gives real-life tips that you can use NOW to work on perfecting your photography, growing your Instagram, and becoming a brand. I definitely recommend this book if you are just getting started on Instagram and want to grow your brand.

Three stars because most of it is exactly like youâ€™d expect. Photos from her Instagram and a description of why she does it the way she does. Does have useful tips for those new to the Instagram scene. Not practical for those who do not use Instagram for making a living. Influencers guide to Instagram.

The book is clearly written and allows you to gain a better perspective as to how the social media world works and how you can better your own platform. The advise given is not just limited to Instagram but can also be applied to general photography (how to take pictures, compositions and angles etc.) I find that it's not a book you read from front to back but a book you can keep going back to for help. I'd recommend it

I don't know why such bad reviews but I loved this book. Read it cover to cover. Very informative to someone who is a beginner. It makes me excited about what I'm about to embark on. Great stuff!

Saves all the tedious thinking and planning on where to stop to take photos and what one could "take a miss on"I wish they had a little on which towns to stay in to get sunrise shots easily but that is a very minor drawback.We usually spend a great deal of time on planning a trip. For example the Smokies. Had an entire trip plannedthen found one of the roads we really wanted to drive is a one way! Would have ruined our trip the way weoriginally planned. The other drawback is you have to use it backwards coming from the south but we foundthe north is actually warmer than the south end as far as spring or fall so I add that as valuable information.

I bought this book in anticipation of traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway in my Winnebago View which has a height of 11.1' according to it's manual. While the book was informative, it was completely wrong about the tunnels at the southern end of the Pkwy when it said they were too low for an RV to pass thru. We traveled the Pkwy from Fancy Gap VA to Gatlinburg TN and every tunnel on the Pkwy was 13.5' or higher. I don't know where this author got their information, but it was incorrect. The section of the Pkwy from Asheville to Gatlinburg was the most scenic part of the Pkwy, a bikers paradise. Don't plan on making good time on the Pkwy, my average was only 25 mph; there were many overlooks and the views were fantastic.

Great information for each mile marker. However, the featured information at the top of many pages is in black print on a dark blue background. Neither my wife nor I could read most of it. If the print had been in white, it would have great. Only three stars because of that.

Used this guide on a recent trip along the length of the Parkway. As it happens, we traveled north to south, which is how the book is arranged. While my husband drove, I read out loud the upcoming mile marker information-- and this guide was very informative. Very glad I'd purchased it. If you're planning on driving the Parkway, I'd highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book along with Best of the Blue Ridge Parkway before a recent trip down the Parkway. While there aren't many photos in this book, it gives very detailed info about all the various vista sites along the Parkway - helpful to know what one is looking at.Good to have had both guides - Best of the Blue Ridge has many nice photos, but not much info on things other than what the author has deemed "best."Based on both books' reviews, we stayed at the Peaks of Otter Lodge along the Parkway which was very nice.

Excellent milepost by milepost guide to the BRP. It tells you what to expect at each overlook, but does not direct you to any attractions beyond the Parkway. For that you'll want to check out Nye Simmons "Best of the Blue Ridge Parkway."

This book is easily the best book I have found on the Blueridge Parkway. It has a concise list of almost all the trails and what mile marker they are located at, where all the tunnels are, when the flowers bloom, has nice pictures, where the pull outs are, where the highlights are, and does all that in a small easily packed book with the cheapest price. Too bad I didn't find this book first.

"The Last Palace" tells the story of Eastern Europe, more specifically Czechoslovakia (later the Czech Republic) in a unique way through the story of a very large house that was build by a very assimilated Jewish man in the late 1920's and early 1930's as fascism was on the rise. It seems clear that there were two groups of people in Prague who hated the house, the anti-Semites who hated anything that was built by someone Jewish and everyone else who hated the monstrosity. Overlaying this story is the story of the author's mother who grew up outside of Prague in an Orthodox Jewish family who it seems had few survivors after the Holocaust. The author describes through subterfuge of the US ambassador immediately at the end of World War II how the house became the property of the US government and the official home of the ambassador (which he eventually was, as well under, President Obama). A major cameo role is that of the late Shirley Temple Black who was also for a time the US ambassador in Prague. The story is told with appropriate detail and interest - even telling us of the role of the Nazi leader in Czechoslovakia in preserving the house (a good Nazi, or perhaps not among the worst?). The only thing lacking from this what is essentially a biography of a house, seemingly the last such house build in Europe, hence the title of the book, would have been more pictures of the actual house and its contents, ideally in color. Highly recommended for many reasons, not the least of all, is a look of how the highly assimilated and wealthy Jews were also struck down by the Holocaust. His mother's thoughts on her native country when he was appointed ambassador there certainly provide a bit of levity wrapping around a certain truth.

The city of Prague is geographically in the middle of what we used to call "Eastern Europe". The city, now the capital of the Czech Republic, has long been a magical, mystical place and its history is pretty much the history of the whole area. I am half-Czech, like former US Ambassador Norman Eisen, but my family immigrated to the US three or four generations ago. He has a more immediate connection with the country as his mother was a survivor of the Holocaust. Eisen's mother left Czechoslovakia in Hitler's railroad cars as a young woman and her son returned as the United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic in the Obama Administration.Norman Eisen has written an unbelievably interesting book about one house, two families, three US ambassadors, and countless others who were involved in the last 100 years of history. He takes the reader through four - or is it five? - political systems which controlled and, in some cases, oppressed the Czech people.Many people reading this review will know about the famous house in the Czech/Moravian city of Brno. Known as the Vila Tugendhat, the Mies-designed house was built in the late 1920's by a wealthy Jewish family, the Tugendhats. The house is now a Unesco World Heritage site and was the subject of a work of fiction, "The Glass Room", by British author Simon Mawrer. But less well-known is a fabulous palace built in Prague around the same time, by Otto Petschek. Like the Tugendhats, the Petschek family fled Europe in the 1930's. The palace was left behind and was eventually used by the United States as an official residence both before WW2 and after. During the war, the house was used by a German general, Rudolf Toussaint.Eisen writes about Toussaint and the German occupation, post-WW2 ambassador Laurence Steinhardt, who tried to settle the Russian/US/Czech political and military crunch , and lastly, Shirley Temple Black. Black was in Prague during the 1968 "uprising" and returned in the late 1980's, presiding over the Velvet Revolution as our ambassador. Scattered through the book is the story of Frieda Eisen, her family, and her recollections of the Czechoslovakia she knew...and the one she was afraid of. Norman Eisman is a masterful writer. His book, while long, was a pleasure to read. I hope it's issued also in Audible.

This eye-opening view of an historical monument in Prague is riveting. The Shirley Temple Black episode is incredible, and the author's deft weaving of his own personal story through the last century in Prague is really something to behold. One of my favorite reads in a long time!

I enjoyed reading this outstanding book detailing the history of the Palace built by a German- Jewish business man and banker. Following the owners escape,the palace had different occupants including Germans, Soviets, and after the war it became an American Embassy. The author also discussed important events of Czechoslovakia and the Czek Republic from 1918 to 2014, combined with the life of his mother who survived the holocaust,went to Israel and ended up in America. I highly recommend this book,even for those (like me) who are familiar with the turbulent history of Czechoslovakia.

This book is fascinating from start to finish. Both a personal account, a page-turner and an in-depth history book. All of the chapters are full of new information and new accounts about the history of Czechoslovakia. I could not stop reading.

Half way through and have yet to read personal accounts or recollections of life during this turbulent and important time. The long section about Rudolf Toussaint had little to do with the house other than as one of its inhabitants. No incentive to continue. An inert house can only be interesting 358 pages if it's telling a story about human lives. Very disappointing as I had high hopes for a genre I normally love.

Interesting portrayal of a country through the history of one of its finer mansionsSurprisingly fails to mention that Prague's old Jewish quarter remained intact rather than was destroyed in WW II because the Nazis wished to preserve it as a museum of an extinct people.
