From the Back Cover
Praise for The Crash Course "Chris Martenson gave up a successful and conventional career to study the two great problems that we face: running out of critical resourcesespecially carbon-based energyand a congenital failure to process unpleasant facts. Reading The Crash Course will help you recognize how dangerous our future is likely to be and will help you prepare for it. It is a job well done." Jeremy Grantham, cofounder and Chief Investment Strategist, Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo "Among the handful of observers making sense of the economic scene, Chris Martenson is the most astute, coherent, and comprehensive. Reading Chris is like stepping out of a room full of smoke and mirrors into daylight." James Howard Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency "Economists did not predict the Great Recession of 2008; Chris did. He looks deeper into the numbers than most and has found a painful future if we do not make a major turn. I deeply appreciate him for doing this work. He uses hard data to back up the self-evident common sense that if we do not consciously manage our natural resources and business relationships to give priority to the common good, we will face dire consequences. This is serious. Read this book." Terry Mollner, Board Member, Ben & Jerry's "Chris addresses fundamental economic and energy issues in understandable terms and provides engaging perspectives. Readers will learn a great deal from his work." Dr. Robert L. Hirsch, lead author of The Impending World Energy Mess

I thought the first half of the book was too long on explaining sustainability. Maybe just me, but it seemed too simplified. The second half of the book was the 'message'. This, I got a lots out of and Chris's points are important for the future of our planet and humankind. I think politicians should be required to read more on 'sustainability' and the limits of energy in the foreseeable future. China has more engineers as politicians than we do. Maybe that's why they can make a 5 year plan that has allowed China to have impressive growth from an agrarian economy to a modern technological economy. (yes, they have their problems too---probably because no one has done what they have done in the short time it has been done) I think their politicians have a better understanding of the issues brought forth in Chris's book. Should also be required reading in any high school/college economics and/or political science class.
In medicine, we try as much as possible to make recommendations to patients that are evidence-based, in other words, based on published research. For published research to be considered valid, other researchers must be able to duplicate the findings. The author of this book writes like a doctor who is explaining to a patient what the latest research shows with regard to her condition. That is to say, each and every paragraphs and sentence that he writes is based on research data. Here, he is saying, is what the research shows: Earth, the mother of all the known living matter in the universe, is being wounded. Wounded by whom?Wounded by humans, allegedly the most intelligent of all of Earth's species of living matter. What must we humans do to prevent the demise of the only known location of all the living matter in the universe?Read this book to know the answers.
The author identifies major economic, energy and environmental trends that are shaping our lives, then describes realistic ways we can respond as individuals and a society. This is a comprehensive, well-documented study; definitely not light reading but worth the effort for those who are concerned and want answers. “Part VII: What Should I Do?†contains the good news – we already have what we need to correct the harmful trends. We simply need the desire and motivation to make the necessary changes a priority. As individuals, we can decide which ones are best suited to our abilities and needs. This is a lengthy book, but it definitely will help you reset your priorities and come to terms with the inevitable changes that face us.
This book doesn't pull any punches, it hits the nail right on its head, and it tells it like it is. Basically, Chris Martenson is giving us the "wake up call" that the world needs, especially Americans like me, that we just can't continue to increase consumption without lots of bad things happening. Not only can't we continue to consume as before, Martenson warns us that we simply will not be able to, because of the convergence of the three "E's" of diminished economy, reduced energy, and compromised environment. I read this book right after completing "The Limits to Growth", and they both make perfect sense to me, the main message being "things can't grow forever". Martenson is trying to tell us that after over-consuming for so long, we will be forced to under-consume as energy scarcity makes everything so expensive, the economy will contract. If we want to avoid pain and suffering, we have to think sustainable from now on. The main question on any project, business, or resource use must be "is it sustainable"?My only criticism of the book is that a scant two pages were spent on alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power, which were casually dismissed as realistic alternatives to our coal and oil-based energy system. If the author lived where I do, he'd realize that the world is just waiting to tap into the greatest source of power in the world - the sun.
I've read all of this stuff before, in one way or another. I can't get enough of this stuff. I believe the majority of these types of perspectives on the global outlook (both resource/economy/environment-wise, as well as geo/political/economic-wise). It's amazing how blind and stubborn/ignorant our society can be, when all the proof is right in front of us!SPOILER: Almost all of this information is available on the author's website (for free), broken down into many mini-chapters that make it quick and easy to break down the otherwise 3 hour+ material into much more manageable sections....and, just like the website(I'm only a fraction of the way through the book, but it follows the same direction and approach as the website, almost word-for-word) this material will have you consistently breaking your promise to yourself of "Ok, I need sleep. I'm only reading x amount of pages tonight".**PLEASE READ BELOW, to see why I think you should still buy this book in addition to the video.---This book aims to change that, and takes an approach that I believe is overwhelmingly convincing, yet a VERY easy read, and VERY non-conspiracy-theory-nutjob-'the-sky-is-falling' style approach that will keep even skeptics reading page-after-page with open-mindedness and interest. WHICH IS HARD TO DO, with this type of material. It's seriously broken-down and explained easy enough for a middle-schooler to appreciate, yet has all the facts and all-encompassing perspectives that give the reader a bulletproof rationale for the book's stance. One thing I love to see in theorists works is when they play devil's advocate and attempt to shoot down their own theory, poke holes in it, and really give benefit-of-the-doubt to their critics----And then still manage to easily dismiss all those attacks by presenting logical step-by-step explanations backed by proof that keep their theory alive and well. This author Definitely does that. :)**The reason I suggest buying a copy of the book rather than solely watching it online (which is just as good, perhaps slightly more-so), is for multiple reasons:1) Often times when we watch long factual videos online, we allow ourselves to do other distracting things like check email, chat, or browse the web...which isn't the end of the world, but definitely takes away from the experience, and will almost assuredly result in loss of some of the fluidity and all-encompassing picture that this author has to offer.2) You can take a hardcopy anywhere. Waiting room in the doctor's office, on the john, slow times at work if you have any, in-transport (plane, train, bus). I know you can do this with other devices now, but my argument here is that when another person SEES that tangeable book in your hands, they get curious. They look at the cover. They ask questions.....It opens up a discussion topic. It allows you to perhaps spread the knowledge to others. Perhaps even make new aquaintences. And I believe that's what we believers need to do, if we want to get the message out! If you're reading this review right now, you're probably already convinced. And that's great. But most of us want to wake up the rest of the world to. And for that reason, I say BUY THE BOOK.3) You can give it away to a friend/family member as a gift, when you're done. And as a gift, adding the "I really want you to read this. It's enlightening, and I think you'll take a lot away from it. Tell me what you think when you're done" as you're handing them a tangeable book GOES A LONG WAY in convincing someone who may otherwise ignore it, to take the plunge. Facebook posts and emails and links in chat conversations can all-to-easily be ignored. But an in-person suggestion from a friend, with a physical gift in their hands, is hard to refuse.TRUST ME. BUY THIS BOOK. I HAAATE reading, but I love this book. Easy quick read, leaves you hungry for more, and is well written and convincing.BUY IT!
