The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World, by Bart D. Ehrman

Review

“How did a small, provincial Jewish sect called Christianity convert the mighty pagan Roman Empire? Bart Ehrman answers this baffling question with the same wit, passion, and rigorous scholarship that have made him one of the most popular religion writers in the world today. The Triumph of Christianity is a marvelous book.”  — Reza Aslan, New York Times bestselling author of Zealot“The great appeal of Ehrman’s approach to Christian history has always been his steadfast humanizing impulse... Ehrman always thinks hard about history’s winners and losers without valorizing the losers or demonizing the winners… Reading about how an entire culture’s precepts and traditions can be overthrown without anyone being able to stop it may not be heartening at this particular historical moment. All the more reason to spend time in the company of such a humane, thoughtful and intelligent historian.” — The New York Times Book Review“Drawing on a wealth of ancient sources and contemporary historical research, Bart Ehrman weaves complex questions into a vivid, nuanced, and enormously readable narrative.” — Elaine Pagels, National Book Award-winning author of The Gnostic Gospels“Like a good college lecture class, [Ehrman’s] book offers both a wealth of historical information and, to make sense of it all, a few plausible theories — including his own. He doesn’t tell us what to think. He gives us a lot to think about.” — Newsday “The value of Ehrman’s book, as is so often the case with his writings, is in his ability to synthesize complex material and distill it into highly readable prose.” — Booklist“Well worth reading for those wishing to dispel myths around the early Christian churches.” — Publishers Weekly“One of Christian history’s greatest puzzles after the age of the apostles is how a tiny band of mostly-illiterate outsiders converted the proud and massive Roman Empire in just three centuries — a historical blink of an eye. In The Triumph of Christianity, Ehrman brings impressive research, intellectual rigor, and an instinct for storytelling to this extraordinary dynamic.” — David Van Biema, former religion writer at Time and author of the forthcoming Speaking to God“Accessible and intriguing.” — Kirkus Reviews“Bart Ehrman is the leading expert on early Christian texts and here he takes the story on into the fourth century in a vivid and readable narrative that explores why Christianity “triumphed” as a world religion. The work is particularly valuable for its critical survey of the work of other scholars in the field.” — Charles Freeman, author of A New History of Early Christianity

I was a Christian for nearly 20 years, and I've been fascinated with early Christian history ever since. Most books on the subject are pretty dry, but Bart Ehrman really knows how to tell a story. I couldn't put it down.Ehrman approaches this book from a critical historical perspective, not a religious/theological perspective, but it is a respectful and honest look at the early Christian centuries. Regardless of where you stand, there's a lot to learn here (such as a brilliant reconstruction of Paul's modus operandi for converting gentiles). It's an engaging and thought-provoking read.

In the year 200 CE Christianity was a minority religion in the multi-cultural Roman Empire, growing steadily but generally unnoticed by the imperial government and upper levels of society. By the year 400 Christianity was the official religion of the Roman Empire, with a majority of the population following it (at least in name) and the imperial government supporting its further expansion. How did this happen? Bart Ehrman, whose twenty books examining early Christianity are all well worth reading, here provides his best work yet: an historical explanation for a religious success which altered the world.Unlike other histories which focus on Constantine's seemingly miraculous conversion, Ehrman's starts at the real beginning in the first century, when what had first been dismissed as a minor variation on Judaism began to gain acceptance among gentiles, thanks primarily to the missionary work of the man later known as St. Paul. Over the next several centuries Christianity grew steadily but quietly, generally tolerated though occasionally subject to persecution, until by the early 300s it had a large enough presence in the Empire that the Emperor Constantine thought it politically worthwhile to convert. Constantine and his immediate successors (except his nephew Julian the Apostate, who ruled for less than two years) encouraged Christianity's spread and in return received the loyalty and support of its growing numbers of adherents. Eventually Emperor Theodosius I made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, leading Christians to dominant status. This is a typically well-researched and well-documented work by Ehrman. He writes for a general audience but never abandons scholarship to do so. The Triumph of Christianity should become a standard reference on the subject.

This is my fifth Ehrman book. As usual, very informative and easy to read. I have no supernatural beliefs but Christianity has influenced our cultural history in so many ways, for better or worse, so it's worth reading about. The haters will likely whine about the book being biased like they have with his other books, but from what I've read so far from Ehrman, it's just matter of fact history. Christianity stripped down, exposing imperfections as well as positives. Unbiased critical history for anyone who wants to know, and believers who aren't afraid of having their beliefs challenged. Highly recommended.

First off, a few confessions:1. I have had a bit of a passion about this topic (i.e. why western civilization became dominated by Christianity – and associated effects) for a decade or so.2. Bart Ehrman was one of my early favorites in this pursuit – with his many books (including frequently used college textbooks), the numerous lectures he has recorded for the Great Courses enterprises, and his prolific blog. That said, this book seems to succinctly and successfully distill the essence of historic (i.e. non theological) scholarship on the topic. Importantly, it facilitates understanding by us non scholars with even just a basic understanding of relevant historic events (e.g. Paul’s missionary endeavors, reigns of important Roman emperors, conversion of Constantine).Clear writing style is definitely an Ehrman forte as is his ability to express sincere (and unaggressive) historian neutrality. He consistently gives due space to more theological views and takes pains to cogently explain what is known, not known or cannot be known from the current state of scholarship.Building on earlier work by Rodney Stark in the late 1990’s, Ehrman also deftly delves into some basic (and understandable) math about conversion rates (from “pagan” to Christianity) in the Roman Empire over the first 4 centuries of the Current Era (CE or AD). In doing so, he explores some variations of assumptions and tries to establish a range of most plausible conclusions, based on what is known from accepted historic evidence. Again, with admitted prejudice, he seems to land on solid scholarly ground. The only regret I had was that the historic extent of the book ended in the early 5th Century CE. With Ehrman still relatively young and seemingly disposed to share his well-earned expertise we can likely be optimistic for more.

I have only read 4 chapters in and i am finding that author does not explain concepts very well. The author also assumes too many steps are known and just blows over how he gets from one formula to another with no explanation. He simply writes “simplify and rearrange” to get a different formula, but doesn’t explain what he is simplifying or rearranging or why. The application problems are so-so, but he doesn’t explain in detail, step by step what he’s doing. If you already get physics, that’s great. You don’t need this book. If you don’t, tough. He isn’t going to tell you in any understable way. It’s a Dummies book, write it for Dummies, dummy. The author might know physics, he doesn’t know squat about teaching it. Total waste of money.

This book is okay, I wish he would explain the formulas a bit more and if Physics explains the natural world, using measurements with math to show things work, WHY don’t they include more examples and images that represent this ‘for the natural world?’ Typical math book, written by typical math people who try to write a book to help non-math people but they speak in math confusing ways, so it’s like blah blah blah. Seems like most higher math tries to justify itself like this book does by examples NO ONE will EVER use in real life, because guess what? We all have access to scientific calculators and we can just use that. The author takes a short cut (from detailing formulas) to state oh you should already know Calculus and Trig... Okay then it’s not a book for dummies is it then?

This book helps with simplifying terms and basic concepts in a college-prep level physics class. I would not recommend it for AP Physics 1 though. It does not go in depth to tackle challenging class assignments in preparation for the actual AP exam. It would be a good introduction during the summer before taking a physics class but that's it.

I bought Physics for Dummies I (2nd Edition - 2011) and Physics for Dummies II (2010) thinking one was continuation of the other. Be aware if you are planning to buy them both one is NOT a continuation of the other. If you are looking for continuity between the books you will want to purchase "Physics for Dummies (2006)" and "Physics for Dummies II (2010)".Case in Point:Physics for Dummies I (2nd edition - 2011) - does not cover DC circuits, Ohms, etc (usually 2nd semester topic), most likely they are putting this topic in the 2nd edition Physics for Dummies II (I would hope).Physics for Dummies II (2010) - will refer you to "Physics I" for DC circuits, ohms, etc.Physics for Dummies (2006) - actually has the DC circuits, chapter called "Giving Electrons a Push with Circuits"A little annoyed but I should have done my research. Hope this helps.

I made it halfway through physics one without needed any help. Once that midterm hit, the concepts became a bit more complex then I was able to handle. This book basically explains things in a way thats easy and actually realistic and saved my grade. In the book it points out specific concepts and equations to remember (big helper). Honestly I probably wouldn't have passed without the help of this book!

I have enjoyed the presentations in this book. I have never truly understood physics, but with the help of Dummies, I'm getting there!

It jumped right into calculus. I guess I needed “Physics for Morons!”

A great book for students of business with lessons that extend well beyond the restaurant and hospitality industries. The author's access to business leaders with insights on customer service is invaluable. The extensions of those lessons into our own experiences with customer service organizations, with investing in customer service enterprises (my profession) and life (see Zappos family values) make this book a must read.

Really appreciate the author’s approach in discussing how different companies deliver great customer service and how they get their employees’ buy-in. I thought he did a great job of offering different perspectives (the Evangelists, the Transformers, and the Pragmatists) with relevant stories demonstrating how companies, old and new, are exhibiting great customer service supported by a focused and aligned workforce. Very compelling!

The authors have done an excellent job of analyzing and presenting the core beliefs that create great customer service and thus great and sustainable businesses. By talking to people in companies both large and small and in a wide range of businesses, they have brought into focus the attitudes and approaches to customer service that have allowed small companies to grow into powerhouses that have stood the test of time. It is one thing to create a business that grows for a year or two. It is another thing entirely to create a business that thrives and grows for many decades. This is a feat that is as rare as it is difficult. The authors do a great job of drilling down to discover what makes possible this nearly impossible feat. It is well worth the read for anyone who owns a business or wants to make a valuable contribution to the business in which he works.

If you are trying to understand how to build consistently excellent customer experience processes, this book is for you. Written by a successful hospitality entrepreneur and full of insightful interviews with some of the leading creators of powerful workplace cultures, The Million Dollar greeting points out practical ways to connect and build long-term, engaged relationships with customers.

Million Dollar Greeting is a terrific book for anyone who interacts with people professionally. The case studies Dan Sachs employs are consistent: great service (or hospitality, as he calls it) requires deliberate, focused attention. It must be a corporate core value to be effective. This book would be a great gift for any new entrepreneur or a seasoned professional who needs a refresher on how to ensure customers feel valued.

I bought this book not knowing what to expect and unsure of whether this kind of research could be applicable to my business. However, the thoughtful interviews and analysis far exceeded my expectations. I even found myself underlining sections of the book to bring up in our next board meeting! The advice in this book is worthwhile for any company — big or small, customer service focused or not. It gave me a lot to think about in terms of the way my company builds a community among our employees, ultimately building more sustainable and long lasting dedication to our mission. I am so glad I ordered a copy of this on a whim! About to buy a few more for my family and coworkers

This book is full of practical advice about creating a culture of engagement between leaders, employees, and customers. The author does a great job at teasing apart tactical ways that a number of successful leaders are able to create a culture of engagement, vitality, and growth. Interestingly, the industy-diverse leaders don't all take the same tact, which is a reassuring message - that a positive culture comes from many and varied means, and from a multitude of styles. The leaders have each created an environment where employees care about the work they do, care about each other, and care about the fate of the organization. I like how the interviews the author conducts address not only why but HOW this type of culture is created. Easy to read, and a high recommend!!

Really useful book. We hear so much about the importance of building culture, meaning, mission, values into our workplaces, and most leaders won't argue with that, many will pay lip service to it daily. But where most struggle is the how to. Daniel Sachs gives us a books worth of how to, in the voice of the leaders who have done it, acknowledge the messy complexity of it, and are crystal clear about the effort it requires. Practical, inspirational - I highlighted loads and took away many, many great ideas.

About the Author

After receiving a fine arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley and completing two years of graduate work in design at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ruth Heller (1923-2004) began her career designing wrapping paper, cocktail napkins, greeting cards, and coloring books. After five years of rejection and one complete revision, Heller's first book, Chickens Aren't the Only Ones, about egg-laying animals, was published in 1981. It was so successful that the sequel, and second book to be published, Animals Born Alive And Well (1982), about mammals, quickly followed. In 1983 and 1984, her third and fourth titles, The Reason For A Flower (about plants that have seeds and flowers) and Plants That Never Ever Bloom (about plants that do not) were published. She then began work on a collection of six books, the How To Hide series on camouflage and the magic of this phenomenon in nature, which covered the entire animal kingdom -- insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and sea creatures. The next collection of books became a five-volume series on parts of speech: A Cache of Jewels and Other Collective Nouns; Kites Sail High: A Book About Verbs; Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives; Merry-Go-Round: A Book About Nouns; and Up, Up and Away: A Book About Adverbs. She also wrote and illustrated the unique and fascinating book Color, a charming and instructive guide to how art goes through the four color printing process.Among the notable people who have had an influence on Heller's writing have been: Ogden Nash, Gilbert and Sullivan, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, and Dr. Seuss. Heller says of her work, "All my books are nonfiction picture books in rhyme. I find writing in rhyme enjoyable and challenging, and I think it is an easy way for children to learn new facts and acquire a sophisticated vocabulary. Children are not intimidated by big words. I try to make my writing succinct and allow the illustrations to convey as much information as possible."

As a science teacher, I could not be happier. This book uses engaging artwork along with rhyming text to explain that more than chickens lay eggs. The book includes birds, reptiles, dinos, amphibians, fish, snails, octopi, spiders, insects, and monotremes. I am so thrilled that a book easily readable in preschool contains such clear information and a lot to discuss and so many projects could connect to this. The book would be great for units covering: Easter, spring, babies, life cycles, animals, etc.Overall, buy the paperback or hardcover, not the library binding as it cuts off the word caterpillar in the spine.BTW, I bought this book without realizing that I already own a number of her books. I liked her camouflage books too.

I love, love, love this book. As a preschool director, I had many science-based projects set up for different times of year. I kept this book with a collection of eggs (a finch egg, chicken, duck, goose and emu egg... and some spent snake casings) After reading the book, I would have a teacher gently show the children the different eggs for comparison. The illustrations in the book are accurate, and the text has a gently rhyming cadence to it. The underlying science is there, as well.

This is a lovely book that can be appreciated by children of varying ages. I love that it makes a non-fiction subject lively and playful! However, I ordered this paperback copy to replace a much older, worn copy of the same book. The new copy lacks the deep, vibrant colors of the original. The illustrations look faded and washed out in comparison. That's disappointing!

I purchased this and the companion book, The Reason for a Flower, years ago when my daughter was small. We very much enjoyed it together. I must admit hearing her casually use the word "oviparous" as a toddler did make me smile. I am looking forward to enjoying this lively prose and these wonderful illustrations again with my grandson. Thank you, Ruth Heller and Amazon.

Got these for my children. They love them. The pictures and text are beautiful and very informative.

Happy to have read this to my students. This is the first comprehensive book of egg layers. It nicely complemented our animal studies.

Good informative book. I may order the mammal one too. I do wish the illustrated pictures were a little more vibrant. Held my 2 year old's interest.

My kindergarteners love this book! They learned so much about oviparous and viviparous animals. (If you don't know what those words mean, you need to read this book!)
