Review

One of Amazon's Best Books of the Month A San Francisco Chronicle Holiday Gift Guide Pick "An enormous and sympathetic book.... It's rich with detail about Mr. McCartney's philanthropy, his knighthood, his taste in country homes, his dabbling as a painter, a poet and a composer of classical music.... The story of its subject's life from his childhood in Liverpool through the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 has lost none of its ability to charm ... One of the best stories the past century has to tell."―Dwight Garner, New York Times"Norman offers a fully-fleshed out biography . . . What Norman gets so very right are the feelings: the intense relationship between John and Paul with its curves and angles; the normality being a husband and father brought him; the improbability of being one of the most famous men in the world. The shelves are full of books about the Beatles, but fans will want to make room for this one."―Ilene Cooper, Booklist (starred)"The most thorough and insightful biography of Paul McCartney to date.... Paul McCartney: The Life is loaded with wonderful passages, fascinating stories and cracking humor... A masterful account, the kind of biography fitting McCartney's continued prowess and genius. Or, as McCartney said at the end of one Beatles take, 'Keep that one. Mark it 'FAB.''"―Jeremy Mikula, Chicago Tribune"Norman's portrait of McCartney is fascinating and exhaustive.... Norman lifts the curtain to show us the real guy."―William McKeen, Boston Globe"A thorough, objective telling of McCartney's story--in and out of the most famous band ever. But it's also a breezy read, considering the tremendous ground it covers."―Jeff Slate, Esquire"Norman is an enviably skilled pen-portraitist, with a consummate ability to conjure the presence of [McCartney].... A powerful sense of McCartney the man comes across in this book's evocative high points.... A capably executed biography, brimming with detail."―John Harris, The Guardian"A compelling narrative about a working-class Liverpudlian whose extraordinary musical gifts made him the most successful songwriter in history... McCartney emerges from [the book] as a textured but decent man."―Graham Boynton, Newsweek"Norman is thorough... and his book gives us a fuller McCartney than you'll find anywhere else."―Colin Fleming, Washington Post"Norman shows McCartney in all his colors: artist, songwriter, genius, family man, and businessman... Even those of us with bookshelves full of Beatles books and libraries of bootleg recordings will be surprised by what they read in The Life."―Laurie Ulster, bio."The once-for-all-time record of the lad from Liverpool whose song lyrics and boyish good looks broke hearts and whose career after the Beatles was almost as successful as his time with them."―Henry L. Carrigan Jr., BookPage

I purchased both the Kindle and Audible versions of this book because I like to both listen to and read at the same time using Audible Narration through whisper sync, so my review will be for both formats. When I started reading the first couple of chapters I was wondering if maybe I had made a mistake buying this book. I was very wrong. Phillip Norman did a great job of giving us an in depth look into Paul McCartney's life, the good and the bad, without making it a sleazy tell all. In short, we got to meet and know Paul McCartney. I am a life long Beatles and Paul McCartney fan, that spent over 20 years in the music business, and I know a lot about both, and this book was still a continuous smorgasbord of fascinating facts that made me never want to put it down. This book begins with his life before the Beatles, continues through the Beatles years, and then moves on through the rest of his life. The research is incredible, and the writing is done in such a way that by the time you finish you will feel like you know Paul McCartney.

This was an honest biography, with plenty of people from Paul McCartney's and the Beatles early days giving their memories of the events of McCartney's life. While there are several other biographies out there, this one goes back to McCartney's parents and paints a vivid portrait of life in Liverpool back in those days as well as the early formative years. It covers the whole of Paul's life up to now, and while Norman is respectful of his subject, he is also honest in his reporting, giving us a portrait of a man who, while undeniably a tremendous talent, a musical genius who helped to change the world, was in the end a real human being, with all the insecurities and flaws that real people have. This is definitely not a biography that bashes anyone, but rather paints a clear and revealing portrait of Paul and the important people in his life. Excellent read, a must-read for any fan of the Beatles and/or Wings and McCartney.

Philip Norman wrote one of the definitive early books on the Beatles, Shout!, and in that book, he didn’t present Paul in a very positive light. This book, however, shows a more balanced view of a man loved by millions but known by very few. While certainly not a perfect man (who is?) Paul is first and foremost an enormously talented human being with all the wonderful qualities people would hope to believe. Norman does show some sides of Paul that aren’t the most flattering but he does show a side of Paul that is very warm and compassionate. I think the only flaw of the book is that it doesn’t say enough about his musical talent. Paul is easily one of the most brilliant musicians of the past 50+ years and it would have been nice to see such commentary in the book. In any case, this book is a terrific read and a wonderful tribute to an amazing man.

This biography is a refreshing look at Paul McCartney's life and career. Of course most of the anecdotes from his years with the Beatles are not new, but the author does reveal some fresh stuff. Norman is a good writer and this is a very interesting and readable biography. The best parts for me were the details of his Wings years and new insight into his relationship with Linda. Finally, Norman takes an extensive look at his disastrous marriage to Heather Mills. Lots of juicy stuff in those pages including incredible details of the nasty court battle and the settlement. Overall, it's the best full life biography of Paul available. Highly recommended.

Pretty mediocre. Toward the end a major slog - all the details of his divorce etc. Zzzzzzz. The guy's Lennon book was better but that one wasn't great either. Never seemed to put much energy into analysing/explaining at length the relationship Paul had with the individuals in the group - during its existence and after. Very little on that put endless drivel about stuff that most people aren't really going to care much about - like the Liverpool Institute project. Great project but not looking for a lot of detail on it. Want to know what the relationships were really like. Positives: it did shed light on Paul's immersion in all things artistic/cultural in the mid 60s - things he never got full "credit" for. Also learned more about Linda and she certainly comes off smelling like a Red Rose Speedway for sure.

I was very disappointed in this. I felt like was reading something from the National Enquirer. If I had done my homework I would have realized that Philip Norman hated Paul McCartney for decades, holding a grudge for his perception that Paul caused the Beatles breakup.. He previously stated that John Lennon was "75% of the Beatles", but now that the author must be low on funds, he changes his opinion on Paul. He made numerous unnecessarily snarky and mean comments about George Harrison. He basically says that George had no talent of his own, and it was Lennon & McCartney's talent that had rubbed off on him. I guess that's why George's post Beatles albums were such flops. I'm no Beatles expert but I'd recommend sticking with Lewisohn's work and avoiding this trashy book.

The writing style may be better appreciated in Britain. We are still separated by a common language. The text did not flow very well. Too often, I had to stop and decipher the intent. Was it a hyphen or a dash? Why use so many dashes? Put another way, why bury a sentence within a sentence? At times, I wondered why I was subjected to so many details about people other than Paul McCartney. Overall, the book is interesting but reading it became tedious.

McCartney’s life is very well chronicled, so is there anything new to say?A little. Norman got access to some of McCartney’s close friends and partners, and of course wrote about the Beatles and Lennon. He’s made a business of covering this well trodden ground.Strangely, the book isn’t deeply focused on the music. And it’s very clear that Norman has little respect for McCartney’s post Beatles career, but nevertheless devotes a few hundred pages to it.There’s better books on this.

Review

Even as a young boy, I was interested in spirituality and its manifestations within religious structures. So it should come as no surprise that I was involved with the Wiccan movements in the United States. We published some of the first books on Wicca in the U.S. and held some of the first Pagan festivals in this country. Over the years I have received thousands of letters from people wanting to know how to become Witches. Many of them came from people who knew a little about the Craft and were specifically interested in Celtic Wicca. If you are interested in this style of the Craft and want to know where to start, I can recommend Celtic Magic by D. J. Conway. Over 225,000 people have this book, and you should have it, too. This book has everything you need to start learning the Celtic traditions. The tools, the rituals, the magical methods -- anything you would want is right here. Do you need a ritual for the Summer Solstice? It's in the book. Do you need some magic to gain love or money? You'll find it here, too. Celtic Magic is a great place to start your studies of Wicca. Do you need to know how to make a magic circle? Instructions are in the book. Do you need a set of magical correspondences so you can determine the best goddess or god, color or incense to use for any magical purpose? You'll find it here, too. Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it is clear and easy to understand. You'll not only read this book for the information, but because it is fun and holds your interest. This is a book you'll find yourself carrying around and frequently consulting. In fact you may find this to be the most valuable book you own.

Celtic Magic by D.J. Conway is an informative book about the Celtic way. Conway discusses how to use Celtic magic in our daily lives. The book has an interesting section on myths and deities, which I found particularly interesting. Conway also goes into spellwork and has nice Table of Concordance at the end of the book.If you are interested in Celtic magic or learning about the Celtic people, I highly recommend this book.

I have been using this book as a quick reference for decades now. I'm on my third copy in fact. This is by far my most used book. The deity listings are clear, and the explanations are very clear. This is a book I buy for all of my Pagan friends as well. It has all sorts of helpful knowledge packed into this tiny book. IMO, it's a must-have for all Celtic pantheon practitioners.

When you feel a connection to a book (or anything) so immediately that you have to purchase it, you know the bond is real. Not even five minutes after having the book in my hands and I am pouring through the pages and everything is see connects. If you feel a call to the Celtic Magicks, and if you feel a connection to this purchase, then it is in your best interest to make this fantastic purchase!

The information was good, but not a lot that I haven't seen in multitudes of other books on the same subject. However, it is a nice book for those just beginning their studies ....the book is easy to understand and follow.

CELTIC MAGIC by D.J. Conway is really deserving of A good review. It's not like I want to go back in time & be A pagan Celt, but I find the book reassuring as some of my' ancestors must of been.

This book seems to get a lot of criticism for accuracy of information. Being my first intellectual exposure to Celtic spirituality, I don't have enough data to defend or concede on those grounds. However, it *definitely* has its redeeming values. Here's what I appreciate about it:-Well-communicated, easily understood magickal discourse. The author explains the important psycho-mechanical processes of ancient magick so often neglected by mainstream witchy writers. She also does so *without* shrouding the data in a cloud of masturbatory mysticism as is (sadly) often the case.-Ethical neutrality. This book is written as instructional magick texts *should* be - without injecting copious amounts of fluff and attempting to enforce a "harm-none" morality. Magick is like a car. It's purpose is to get you from point A to point B, and whether it's used to drive someone to the hospital, or to run them over is up to the driver, not the dealership. Conway seems to understand and respect this.-Nicely condensed. This is a short book which will not require you to spend loads of time mining for a few useful tidbits amongst a sea or irrelevant or unintelligible nonsense.I would recommend this to a person wanting to begin experiencing Pagan spirituality with a specifically Celtic flavor. However, for the sake of honesty, the cultural data may or may not be entirely accurate and you may want to supplement this with some of the books recommended by other reviewers.

One of my favorite books on the subject. The tables are disputable, and fantasies about Robin Hood being a Wiccan(?), amusing. However I developed my love for this book back in the early 80s (?) and 90s. Way back before the fundamentalist paganism arose. This book was brought to me in my innocence and led me to do more of my own research. What did this book give me? The inspiration of fantasy which is far more important and precious than the veracity of disputed history. I can say this a million times, that if all the sacred mythologies in the world religions are nothing more than fiction, what does it matter if it inspires and sets one on a path which is benifical and healing to the adherent. This book is connected to my innocence and naievete. On sad days when my own life was beyond my control, this book brought comfort.Despite the recipe\formula of the rituals it is absolutely perfect for someone who has yet to develop the skill, or for that matter, someone who needs to start over. It is a sort of paint by number type of book. Truly take this book with a grain of salt and a lot of imagination. It will not teach the essentials like , meditation, visualization, in depth herbology, or accurate history and mythology. Where it fails however is where it excels, it sparks imagination, it gives a taste so that one wishes to learn more. Most 'experts' will find this book too superfluous, too childlike to find any use in it. What most experts fail to understand is that often we must shed our knowledge to begin anew and to tear down the paradigm which is holding ones life in stagnation. This little book does not bog one down with absolutes, it simply inspires, and gives you the frailest frame work so that you may flesh it out. I came from a time when there were no experts to ask, when all the work was done on ones own, when books like this, as poorly done as it may be, were a Goddess-send. I will always love this book.So if you are beginning again, wiping the slate, and going back to zero; or if you are truly a new beginner. This is one of the fun ones to start with.Just remember, we do not look for absolutes in a child's book, we look for fantasy, inspiration, and wonder. This book is the first grade, kindergarten introduction to magic and a beautiful one at that. It has been lost among the millions of first step books with regurgitated information and bias. Conway has imagination... she knows how to touch my dreams. That was what was so wonderful about the Neo-Paganism in its infancy, it was fresh, new, without limit, and full of promise. The current Neo-Pagan movement has lost that; and done what every major religion has done, sought an absolute truth, one that destroys mystery.

Just awesome a great read

An interesting look at how stylish sneakers not only went mainstream but created an entirely new business opportunity. Similar to other fashion pieces like women's purses, this book explores how sneakers aren't just for wearing!

Having watched the sneaker sales phenomenon from afar for many years, “Sneakonomics” offers an up close look at the business and explores why even the smallest sneaker-related companies can have a profound impact on the broader sneaker economy. I love continued learning. Dylan is a good teacher.

Provides an excellent look into the sneaker industry. It really tells the story of how innovation and speed are transforming the industry. Very well written.

Dylan finds a way to share a passion, educate the layperson and entertain the reader all at once in this highly recommended read. Bravo to Mr. Dittrich on his debut work.

Dylan provides a fascinating look into how the digital era makes it much more efficient for consumers to value their assets and actually realize that value, whether foor sneakers or anything else!

Supply and demand impacts prices... even for shoes. Buy low, sell high. Dylan's book dives into the economics of the sneaker market. It's interesting to take a dive into this emerging and growing "asset class."

Dittrich provides a thoughtful take of the innovation taking place in the sneaker world is awe-inspiring, and the book helps the reader understand the broader implications for consumer retail.

A conventional biography of one of the more interesting men in history. Here the author, Mr. Zamoyski, trains his eye of the personal aspects of Napoleon's life, including his extended family and many loves, while also presenting the political and military context of his rule. It helps one to understand current European events with this background. Those seeking an in-depth analysis of his many battles should keep seeking; here they are usually covered superficially.Napoleon, like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, has had many volumes written about him. This one is reasonably good and even-handed for the reader wishing to be introduced to the one who upset the map of Europe over two hundred years ago.(I am in the camp that sees Napoleon as one who caused untold misery and death for no good reason, except the quest for personal glory.)

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) has had more books written about him than could fill a well stocked library! His meteoric rise and fall have been well documented on film and page. In this new biography the reader will come to learn more about the personality of the little corporal. Napoleon was born in a large family in Corsica. His father Carlo was a lawyer and noble who had a complicated relationship with Paoli the liberator of Corsica. Napoleon went to Brienne to receive his military training and was born in the days when Corsica was a French possession. He was a quiet and serious young man who became an artillery officer during the stirring days of the French Revolution. He succeeded in military glory and after a long series of complicated political jockeying became the emperor of France. He was a great field general and led France to victory over her opponents such as Great Britain, Prussia, Austria, Denmark and Spain. He invaded Russia but was forced to retreat following his defeat by General Snow in the horrible winter of 1812. Napoleon lost his crown and empire following his overwhelming defeat at Waterloo Belgium in 1815. He had escaped from the isle of Elbe but following Waterloo he spent his last years as a prisoner of the British on the island of St. Helena. Napoleon was wed to the unfaithful but fetching Josephine. She could not produce and heir so he divorced her wedding a Hapsburg princess who gave him a son. He was a serial adulterer and womanizer of historical renown. He was bright and a good leader of armies who enjoyed learning. The Rosetta Stone was discovered by a scientist who was part of the intellectual team of scholars he took with him on his invasion of Egypt. Napoleon had a large and difficult family. Much of the biography deals with how Napoleon dealt with them. He was a kindhearted man but could be brutal against his enemies. If you want to delve into the battlefields of Europe during the Napoleonic era I suggest works by David Chandler and Andrew Roberts. If you would more enjoy the personal side of Napoleon then this book will meet your needs I enjoyed this book and can heartily recommend it to you. Vive La France!

Napoleon Bonaparte is one of those larger than life figures who becomes a myth, a hero, and a villain, and in the process the true human being often disappears. In Napoleon: A Life Adam Zamoyski works to discover the man behind the legend. Zamoyski works to place Napoleon in the context of his time period, both politically and philosophically. He works to explain the occasionally unexplainable mindset of the French Revolution and French Republic so that readers can understand how ready France was to accept someone like Napoleon as their leader.Zamoskyi warns readers in his introduction that he examines the military aspects of Napoleon's life only as he feels they effected his political and personal situation. This leads to an uneven study of the military aspect of Napoleon, heavily emphasized in the beginning and much less so by the 1812 campaigns in Russia. Waterloo receives barely a page and a half. But since these are well researched and frequently written about in other books, I think the unevenness worked in the book's favor. More is certainly known about those times than about Napoleon's family, his work on restoring France, or his behavior to enemies and colleagues. Here we discover Napoleon's formative years on Corsica and his work to define his life on his own terms. Corsican traditions emphasized family above all and Napoleon followed this throughout his life- while his brothers and sisters only considered family when it benefitted them directly. Napoleon was a man who grew up despising the idea of love, only to fall head over heels in love with Josephine- who I also learned far more about in this book than I had ever known before! He was not a man who was comfortable delegating authority, which became a serious problem when he was on campaign and trying to run an empire. Even when he wanted peace, he felt his only true claim to the throne of France was as a general.A well-written and well researched book, Zampyshki's Napoleon delves behind the myths to get as close to the man as possible. Neither a saint nor a demon, Napoleon is instead presented as a man with both genius and faults, who retained until the end of his life an incredible charisma that caused men to devote their lives to his star, even when it seemed hopeless. Which is perhaps a large part of why he is still so fascinating today. An excellent biography for those interested in learning more about French history and the Napoleonic Wars, as well as the self-made man behind the legend.

Simply put, the best one volume account of the Emporer that I have ever read. Evenly balanced, with wonderful prose, Zamoyski's biography is valuable as an introduction to Napoleon, and a highly enjoyable read for those like myself who have read many books on the great man.

Marvelously articulate conversational mode including the historian's detail and the rich socio-cultural mimesis of Mr. Zamoyski.

I have read numerous books but this one has a clerity that few others have

About the Author

Al-Ghazâlî (c.1056 1111) was one of the most prominent and influential philosophers, theologians, jurists, and mystics of Sunni Islam. He was active at a time when Sunni theology had just passed through its consolidation and entered a period of intense challenges from Shiite Ismâ îlite theology and the Arabic tradition of Aristotelian philosophy (falsafa). Al-Ghazâlî understood the importance of falsafa and developed a complex response that rejected and condemned some of its teachings, while it also allowed him to accept and apply others. Al-Ghazâlî's critique of twenty positions of falsafa in his Incoherence of the Philosophers (Tahâfut al-falâsifa) is a significant landmark in the history of philosophy as it advances the nominalist critique of Aristotelian science developed later in 14th century Europe. On the Arabic and Muslim side al-Ghazâlî's acceptance of demonstration (apodeixis) led to a much more refined and precise discourse on epistemology and a flowering of Aristotelian logics and metaphysics. With al-Ghazâlî begins the successful introduction of Aristotelianism or rather Avicennism into Muslim theology. After a period of appropriation of the Greek sciences in the translation movement from Greek into Arabic and the writings of the falâsifa up to Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ, c.980 1037), philosophy and the Greek sciences were naturalized into the discourse of kalâm and Muslim theology (Sabra 1987). Al-Ghazâlî's approach to resolving apparent contradictions between reason and revelation was accepted by almost all later Muslim theologians and had, via the works of Averroes (Ibn Rushd, 1126 98) and Jewish authors a significant influence on Latin medieval thinking. -- Griffel, Frank, "Al-Ghazali", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Summer 2013 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.)

There is a good reason Al-Ghazali is acknowledged as the first Muslim scholar who laid the foundation of rational thinking in the interpretation of Islamic beliefs and rituals. He is also regarded as one of the founders of Sufism. In this short translation, the topic of introspection to understand universal truths and the very meaning of human existence is masterfully covered. He uses analogies and allegories to explain complex thought processes that many of us use to intuitively understand what we can observe and feel but find it hard to articulate to others. It is amazing that a person who lived a thousand years ago can resonate with believers living today! However, his arguments are wasted if the reader is a die-hard atheist or a non-believer. Such a person would find many holes to poke in Al-Ghazali’s reasoning.

This short book forced me to reflect upon myself and eventually change my "business as usual" of life. Al-Ghazzali philosophically breaks down the human "self" and formulates an argument of why it makes sense to transcend the body and its five senses and make a connection with God Almighty. The book's content talks to you so directly and strikingly that it dumbfounds you to imagine someone wrote it a 1000 years ago.If you are a believer (no matter what religion), you will find this book no less than a hidden treasure. It will help make your connection to God stronger by answering many questions you may have. Even if you don't believe in God, it will still give you insight into your own self from angles that will keep you thinking for a while.I cannot recommend this book highly enough and wish there were more stars I could give it.

A very thin book but how fully filled it is !! Heavy but good ,needs re reading .

I’m so excited to read and reflect upon Imam ghazali’s رحمت الله عليه words of wisdom.I will edit my review after I complete the book. 🤗 was so happy receiving it in 2 days.

Please redp the translation. It's extremely difficult to understand. I really wish I could understand this book better.

Having the right information,Learning,Strength an individual faith,Have a clearly understand about Islam

I will recommend this book, basically for people who wants to get moreknowledge about our Creator......This book is one section from the Imam Ghazzali's Ihya Ulum al Din.

This book can literally change your life if you really try to comprehend it. Its not a very long book yet its as deep as an ocean.

Review

Enjoyable to browse or read cover-to-cover. Everything from the earliest days of tracing figures on frozen ponds to the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow are featured here. The photographs found here, many of which are unique to this volume, fit the text well and the show the progression of the sport. Because there are so few reference titles available on this topic this would be a good addition to the reference section of larger public libraries. Some libraries may find it fits better in the circulating reference collection, however, where patrons can enjoy it at their leisure. (Shannon Graff Hysell American Reference Books Annual)Fans of all ages will delight in the stories of the stars who have jumped higher, spun tighter and skated more gracefully as they pushed skating's artistic and technical boundaries. A beautifully illustrated celebration of the best athletes from a wildly popular sport, this new book profiles 60 great skaters, including champions in men's, women's, pairs and ice dancing. (Canadian Geographic 2010-01-12)Hamilton Spectator columnist Steve Milton has written a lively and authoritative history of figure skating, including profiles of 63 star athletes. This lushly illustrated new book shows how women such as Sonja Henie, Barbara Ann Scott, Peggy Fleming, Midori Ito, Kristi Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt, Michelle Kwan, and Irina Slutskaya contributed to the evolution of the sport, which has become one of the marquee events of the Winter Games. Milton demonstrates how North Vancouver's silver-medal-winning Karen Magnussen has not received enough recognition for her innovations, which included the first layover camel and a spiral sequence that later became a requirement of the short program. "She was the first woman to do the splits in both directions, the first to proceed from an Ina Bauer into a double Axel and the first to do a side layback into a back layback," he writes. As the preceding sentence shows, Milton knows his figure skating. (Charlie Smith Georgia Straight 2010-02-11)Double-page illustrations give plenty of scope for expressive drawings, brightened with cheerful watercolor washes. This small-scale story is fitting for children whose play involves the imagined adventures of their favorite toys. (Peter Scowen Globe and Mail 2010-02-03)If you didn't get your fill of figure skating during the Olympics, don't despair--this book is for you! (Good Times 2010-03-31)This large-format hardcover is beautifully illustrated with historic photos of the sport's legends. (Pamela Steel Huntsville Forester 2009-12-16)Milton, author of twelve figure-skating books (Figure Skating Now), wants sports fans to be as familiar with Jacson Haines, Sonja Henie, and Peggy Fleming as they are with Abner Doubleday, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantle. With this large, colorful book he fills the need for a popular history of figure skating. Far from a dry parade of names, the book focuses on trailblazers and pivotal personalities such as artistic rebel John Curry of the 1970s and creative innovators Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in the 1980s. Readers learn not only about the skaters' careers but their personal lives as well, such as Dorothy Hamill's battle with depression. A great chapter on scoring explains the pros and cons of the elimination compulsory figures and, without getting too technical, outlines the new scoring system that replaced the problematic 6.0 scale... Recommended for avid figure-skating fans and because of the many action photos, casual fans as well. (Kathy Ruffle, College of New Calendonia Library Library Journal)Milton, a sports journalist who has covered figure skating for three decades, profiles 63 figure skaters in men's and women's singles, pairs, and ice dancing, including pioneers, legends, influential skaters, technical innnovators, and current stars. Accompanied by color photos, the profiles give information on skaters like Dick Button, Brian Boitano, Sonja Henie, Michelle Kwan, Katarina Witt, Gordeeva and Grinkov, Shen and Zhao, Torvill and dean, Brian Joubert, Carol Heiss, and Kristi Yamaguchi. Sidebars discuss important themes and moments in skatin'g history, like the judging system, nationalism, and the Nancy Kerrigan incident. (SciTech Book News)A sports writer with the Hamilton Spectator, Steve Milton has attended seven Winter Olympics and more than a dozen World Figure Skating Championships. In this book [Milton] profiles more than 60 world champions, past and present, from all over the world, in the process telling the history of the sport. (Waterloo Region Record 2009-12-12)Steve Milton's book is simply wonderful. Figure Skating's Greatest Stars is more than a comprehensive look at the greatest skaters the world has ever seen--it is a refreshing narrative on skating's past, present and future. This book is a must for all skating fans, regardless of age. (Karen Cover, Archivist World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame)

This book is broken into the four skating disciplines (Men's, Pairs, Ladies, Ice Dance) and has side sections with some history about the development of figure skating. Many known personalities are covered here (Michelle Kwan, Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, to name a few) but there are quite a few skaters that I had not heard of but made a significant mark on the sport. The book is easy to read and never boring and has some historical photographs of interest. It even tries to explain the new scoring system (which I don't think anyone in the ISU or even Dick Button can do adequately). If you are a fan of figure skating or just curious about the sport this book will entertain and enlighten you.

If you're interested in figure skating, this is a nice book to put on the shelves, to pick up once in a while whenever you feel like knowing more about certain athletes in the sport. Although the author acknowledges that he provides a personal view, he also states that choices were made on the basis of the impact of skaters on the sport in general. So, he can sometimes present skaters who have won no World or Olympic championship at any time but still influenced the direction of the sports in a substantial way. And for the most part, this is correct. However, especially concerning the more recent years he does show a somewhat North American Favouritism which is a pity because the rest of the book (the early years and the intermediate ones) is highly balanced on that score. This can be illustrated with ice-dancing. Olympic and World Champions Marina Anessina and Gwendal Pezzerat do not get a chapter of their own, even though they showed remarkable innovations like the gender changes in the lifts. Others have since than followed on with this practice. That means they did execute a major influence on the direction the discipline has taken. Similar omissions are present (or to be be exact: they are not present as such in the book!) with regard to other disciplines. Having said that, this still is a wonderful book, with beautiful photo's, and interesting descriptions of the (skating) histories and lives of many skaters. Despite the small bias noted and remarked upon, I would still highly recommend it to fans all over the World.

Nice retro book on figure skating. Reminds me of good times as a young skater.

I rated good only because I thought I was buying a dvd. The book looked good as far as a book goes but I had wanted a dvd.

Bought this for my daughter who is a competitive figure skater and she LOVES it! The photos are beautiful and the articles look to be very interesting!

If you’re familiar with the history of the computer industry, you’re no doubt aware that the Internet was conceived and developed by a U.S. Government agency called DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).Chances are that you don’t know that DARPA also invented drones both big and tiny, Agent Orange, the M16 Assault Rifle, sophisticated sensor technology, the F117A stealth fighter jet, MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) that carry nuclear weapons, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, robotic soldiers — and a slew of other military weapons systems, most of them still top secret.Remember Total Information Awareness, the predecessor to the massive data collection programs of the NSA that Edward Snowden revealed? DARPA was responsible for that one, too. The agency’s work also gave birth to less lethal technologies, including “real-time video processing, noise reduction, image enhancement, and data compression.” It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact of this little-known agency. All this comes to light in the pages of journalist Annie Jacobsen’s The Pentagon’s Brain, the first full-length study of America’s secretive military research agency.DARPA’s missionDARPA was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower over the strenuous objections of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and just about everyone else in the military establishment. “Its mission is to create revolutions in military science and to maintain technological dominance over the rest of the world.” No doubt there are many in the military and in conservative circles who are thrilled at how successful the agency has been in fulfilling its mission, their original unhappiness notwithstanding. The rest of us should be scared. Very scared. With its origins in the debates over the use of the hydrogen bomb and the policy of Mutual Assured Destruction in the 1950s, DARPA’s R&D programs have consistently been found on the far frontiers of military science. Among its least savory efforts (among a great many) were a project in 1958 to shield the United States from Soviet attack by exploding nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and the use of the herbicide Agent Orange to defoliate the South Vietnamese forests sheltering Vietcong troops. DARPA scientists actually did detonate nuclear weapons in the atmosphere — and you know the story of Agent Orange.Unpleasant surprisesThe Pentagon’s Brain was the product of exhaustive research. Much of the book is based on formerly classified materials that have only lately come to light. Author Annie Jacobsen turned up startling new information in the course of her research. For example, she learned that the world came even closer to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile Crisis than anyone outside top government and military circles was aware: “four nuclear weapons were detonated in space” during those tense days, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of total nuclear war. (Two of those were the aforementioned bombs sired by DARPA.)Though born in the grimmest days of the Cold War, DARPA’s work for more than a decade focused on the war in Vietnam. (The agency was originally called just ARPA until Congress got into the act.) That conflict led to the development of the M16 rifle and many other, less celebrated weapons of war. But much of the work involved the social sciences, subcontracted to the RAND Corporation, a name that will be familiar to anyone who lived through those times. ARPA contractors working for RAND helped to justify the notorious Strategic Hamlets program in which South Vietnamese peasants were forcibly removed from their villages and their lands and moved into heavily guarded new settlements. In fairness, the first round of ARPA social scientists found that the Strategic Hamlets were alienating peasants, but their findings were simply rejected by Pentagon leaders and more amenable researchers hired. Similarly, “the agency did not want to hear that the Vietcong could not be defeated. [Administrators] took the position that [the social scientists] had gone off the rails.”The electronic battlefieldThe high profile of many DARPA inventions notwithstanding, what may be its most significant creation was a “system of systems” that is known today as the electronic battlefield. Jacobsen calls it “the most revolutionary piece of military technology of the twentieth century, after the hydrogen bomb.” This concept encompasses the use of remotely piloted attack drones and technology that enhances the ability of individual soldiers. Ultimately, DARPA research is expected to extend the concept into “transhumanism — the notion that man can and will alter the human condition fundamentally by augmenting humans with machines and other means.” One such effort is the DARPA exoskeleton, which bears an uncanny resemblance to The Terminator and Robocop. Another is an effort to “allow future ‘soldiers [to] communicate by thought alone.”The Pentagon’s Brain is crammed with chilling examples of the brave new world envisioned by DARPA scientists. I would like to think that every member of Congress would read this book — and then take a much more careful look at funding for the Pentagon. Fat chance, eh?About the authorAnnie Jacobsen is the author of three previous nonfiction books about the Pentagon. One relates the story of Operation Paperclip that brought Werner von Braun and other Nazi scientists to the U.S. following World War II. Another is a history of Area 51, which may be the best known and most notorious American military base in existence.

The Pentagon's Brain is investigative reporter Annie Jacobsen's masterpiece, a brilliant tour-de-force that led to her being a 2016 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History. It is the history of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon's military and technology think tank that has been helping the US maintain military dominance on the battlefield since the post-WWII glory days of nuclear weapons development. Thoroughly researched, yet eminently readable, Jacobsen writes history with the pacing and character development of a suspense thriller. You won't soon forget the people or the places described in this book (which is the key to compelling history). The subtitle, "An Uncensored History of DARPA, America's Top-Secret Military Research Agency" lives up to the reader's expectations. The truth is, no author has ever tackled DARPA quite like this. Building from research in her previous books as well as her past careers as an LA Times Magazine historical reporter and a PJMedia investigative reporter, Jacobsen covers what is for her familiar ground. She follows it up with impeccable research and then brings together all the seemingly disjointed pieces into a cognitive whole. The effect is a book that is as thorough as it is fascinating. Will better books about DARPA be written in the future? Undoubtedly, but only because future journalists will have Jacobsen to thank for showing them the way. Jacobsen writes with the puritan objectivity that sometimes gets her in trouble with readers and subjects that have strong biases but it works well in this book. Some readers may disagree with some of her conclusions (her battle of Mogadishu assessment misses the mark). But it's nearly impossible for an outsider to thoroughly capture all of the right stuff when researching classified history. And she closes the book with her signature personal appearance in the last chapter. Because after all, good writers not only write history, they sometimes become a part of it. Highly recommended. Especially for those interested in Cold War history, intelligence operations, technology, US government secret programs, government conspiracy, futurism, research and development, military affairs, and scientific innovations. Read this book.

I loved this book. I purchased it in KIndle form and then recently purchased the hard copy to reread with notes. The book gives you a history of the Pentagon, inception of alphabet agencies of the government and the origins of psychological warfare as well as past and some contemporary research into weaponry. The portion on the Vietnam war was very enlightening.I recommend this book as well as her Area 51 book.

A very good book for those people interested in scientific research, development and military applications of the new systems. A couple of systems such as the AR 15/M-16 rifle, drone aircraft, night vision goggles, and robotics are in use today and have been updated since the book was written. I highly recommend the book.

An interesting history of DARPA, DOD's advanced research arm. It is heavy going at times but very substantive. Some of the early chapters stuck me as a bit sensationalist, looking back 50 years after the very different times. The book might not be of interest to someone with little knowledge or interest in Defense issues

A really fine book that will shock you. Few have a clue about what goes on behind the scenes!

Mind boggling!! An awesome tale of the unbelievable brains working behind the scenes in keeping our country ahead of the curve in technology first by use by the military and then converting to commercial use. Amazing how this is all kept secret in front of our eyes. A must read for all.

Amazing description of H-bomb and subsequent nuclear race. Scares the Dickens out of you as it exposes crazy strategies studied but thankfully rejected. Ends with believable speculation of brain control research. Would rate higher but for slow mid-book coverage of well understood events . Could eliminate 30% without loss of significance.
