Review

Enjoyable to browse or read cover-to-cover. Everything from the earliest days of tracing figures on frozen ponds to the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow are featured here. The photographs found here, many of which are unique to this volume, fit the text well and the show the progression of the sport. Because there are so few reference titles available on this topic this would be a good addition to the reference section of larger public libraries. Some libraries may find it fits better in the circulating reference collection, however, where patrons can enjoy it at their leisure. (Shannon Graff Hysell American Reference Books Annual)Fans of all ages will delight in the stories of the stars who have jumped higher, spun tighter and skated more gracefully as they pushed skating's artistic and technical boundaries. A beautifully illustrated celebration of the best athletes from a wildly popular sport, this new book profiles 60 great skaters, including champions in men's, women's, pairs and ice dancing. (Canadian Geographic 2010-01-12)Hamilton Spectator columnist Steve Milton has written a lively and authoritative history of figure skating, including profiles of 63 star athletes. This lushly illustrated new book shows how women such as Sonja Henie, Barbara Ann Scott, Peggy Fleming, Midori Ito, Kristi Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt, Michelle Kwan, and Irina Slutskaya contributed to the evolution of the sport, which has become one of the marquee events of the Winter Games. Milton demonstrates how North Vancouver's silver-medal-winning Karen Magnussen has not received enough recognition for her innovations, which included the first layover camel and a spiral sequence that later became a requirement of the short program. "She was the first woman to do the splits in both directions, the first to proceed from an Ina Bauer into a double Axel and the first to do a side layback into a back layback," he writes. As the preceding sentence shows, Milton knows his figure skating. (Charlie Smith Georgia Straight 2010-02-11)Double-page illustrations give plenty of scope for expressive drawings, brightened with cheerful watercolor washes. This small-scale story is fitting for children whose play involves the imagined adventures of their favorite toys. (Peter Scowen Globe and Mail 2010-02-03)If you didn't get your fill of figure skating during the Olympics, don't despair--this book is for you! (Good Times 2010-03-31)This large-format hardcover is beautifully illustrated with historic photos of the sport's legends. (Pamela Steel Huntsville Forester 2009-12-16)Milton, author of twelve figure-skating books (Figure Skating Now), wants sports fans to be as familiar with Jacson Haines, Sonja Henie, and Peggy Fleming as they are with Abner Doubleday, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantle. With this large, colorful book he fills the need for a popular history of figure skating. Far from a dry parade of names, the book focuses on trailblazers and pivotal personalities such as artistic rebel John Curry of the 1970s and creative innovators Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in the 1980s. Readers learn not only about the skaters' careers but their personal lives as well, such as Dorothy Hamill's battle with depression. A great chapter on scoring explains the pros and cons of the elimination compulsory figures and, without getting too technical, outlines the new scoring system that replaced the problematic 6.0 scale... Recommended for avid figure-skating fans and because of the many action photos, casual fans as well. (Kathy Ruffle, College of New Calendonia Library Library Journal)Milton, a sports journalist who has covered figure skating for three decades, profiles 63 figure skaters in men's and women's singles, pairs, and ice dancing, including pioneers, legends, influential skaters, technical innnovators, and current stars. Accompanied by color photos, the profiles give information on skaters like Dick Button, Brian Boitano, Sonja Henie, Michelle Kwan, Katarina Witt, Gordeeva and Grinkov, Shen and Zhao, Torvill and dean, Brian Joubert, Carol Heiss, and Kristi Yamaguchi. Sidebars discuss important themes and moments in skatin'g history, like the judging system, nationalism, and the Nancy Kerrigan incident. (SciTech Book News)A sports writer with the Hamilton Spectator, Steve Milton has attended seven Winter Olympics and more than a dozen World Figure Skating Championships. In this book [Milton] profiles more than 60 world champions, past and present, from all over the world, in the process telling the history of the sport. (Waterloo Region Record 2009-12-12)Steve Milton's book is simply wonderful. Figure Skating's Greatest Stars is more than a comprehensive look at the greatest skaters the world has ever seen--it is a refreshing narrative on skating's past, present and future. This book is a must for all skating fans, regardless of age. (Karen Cover, Archivist World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame)

This book is broken into the four skating disciplines (Men's, Pairs, Ladies, Ice Dance) and has side sections with some history about the development of figure skating. Many known personalities are covered here (Michelle Kwan, Peggy Fleming, Brian Boitano, to name a few) but there are quite a few skaters that I had not heard of but made a significant mark on the sport. The book is easy to read and never boring and has some historical photographs of interest. It even tries to explain the new scoring system (which I don't think anyone in the ISU or even Dick Button can do adequately). If you are a fan of figure skating or just curious about the sport this book will entertain and enlighten you.

If you're interested in figure skating, this is a nice book to put on the shelves, to pick up once in a while whenever you feel like knowing more about certain athletes in the sport. Although the author acknowledges that he provides a personal view, he also states that choices were made on the basis of the impact of skaters on the sport in general. So, he can sometimes present skaters who have won no World or Olympic championship at any time but still influenced the direction of the sports in a substantial way. And for the most part, this is correct. However, especially concerning the more recent years he does show a somewhat North American Favouritism which is a pity because the rest of the book (the early years and the intermediate ones) is highly balanced on that score. This can be illustrated with ice-dancing. Olympic and World Champions Marina Anessina and Gwendal Pezzerat do not get a chapter of their own, even though they showed remarkable innovations like the gender changes in the lifts. Others have since than followed on with this practice. That means they did execute a major influence on the direction the discipline has taken. Similar omissions are present (or to be be exact: they are not present as such in the book!) with regard to other disciplines. Having said that, this still is a wonderful book, with beautiful photo's, and interesting descriptions of the (skating) histories and lives of many skaters. Despite the small bias noted and remarked upon, I would still highly recommend it to fans all over the World.

Nice retro book on figure skating. Reminds me of good times as a young skater.

I rated good only because I thought I was buying a dvd. The book looked good as far as a book goes but I had wanted a dvd.

Bought this for my daughter who is a competitive figure skater and she LOVES it! The photos are beautiful and the articles look to be very interesting!

If you’re familiar with the history of the computer industry, you’re no doubt aware that the Internet was conceived and developed by a U.S. Government agency called DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).Chances are that you don’t know that DARPA also invented drones both big and tiny, Agent Orange, the M16 Assault Rifle, sophisticated sensor technology, the F117A stealth fighter jet, MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) that carry nuclear weapons, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, robotic soldiers — and a slew of other military weapons systems, most of them still top secret.Remember Total Information Awareness, the predecessor to the massive data collection programs of the NSA that Edward Snowden revealed? DARPA was responsible for that one, too. The agency’s work also gave birth to less lethal technologies, including “real-time video processing, noise reduction, image enhancement, and data compression.” It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact of this little-known agency. All this comes to light in the pages of journalist Annie Jacobsen’s The Pentagon’s Brain, the first full-length study of America’s secretive military research agency.DARPA’s missionDARPA was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower over the strenuous objections of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and just about everyone else in the military establishment. “Its mission is to create revolutions in military science and to maintain technological dominance over the rest of the world.” No doubt there are many in the military and in conservative circles who are thrilled at how successful the agency has been in fulfilling its mission, their original unhappiness notwithstanding. The rest of us should be scared. Very scared. With its origins in the debates over the use of the hydrogen bomb and the policy of Mutual Assured Destruction in the 1950s, DARPA’s R&D programs have consistently been found on the far frontiers of military science. Among its least savory efforts (among a great many) were a project in 1958 to shield the United States from Soviet attack by exploding nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and the use of the herbicide Agent Orange to defoliate the South Vietnamese forests sheltering Vietcong troops. DARPA scientists actually did detonate nuclear weapons in the atmosphere — and you know the story of Agent Orange.Unpleasant surprisesThe Pentagon’s Brain was the product of exhaustive research. Much of the book is based on formerly classified materials that have only lately come to light. Author Annie Jacobsen turned up startling new information in the course of her research. For example, she learned that the world came even closer to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile Crisis than anyone outside top government and military circles was aware: “four nuclear weapons were detonated in space” during those tense days, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of total nuclear war. (Two of those were the aforementioned bombs sired by DARPA.)Though born in the grimmest days of the Cold War, DARPA’s work for more than a decade focused on the war in Vietnam. (The agency was originally called just ARPA until Congress got into the act.) That conflict led to the development of the M16 rifle and many other, less celebrated weapons of war. But much of the work involved the social sciences, subcontracted to the RAND Corporation, a name that will be familiar to anyone who lived through those times. ARPA contractors working for RAND helped to justify the notorious Strategic Hamlets program in which South Vietnamese peasants were forcibly removed from their villages and their lands and moved into heavily guarded new settlements. In fairness, the first round of ARPA social scientists found that the Strategic Hamlets were alienating peasants, but their findings were simply rejected by Pentagon leaders and more amenable researchers hired. Similarly, “the agency did not want to hear that the Vietcong could not be defeated. [Administrators] took the position that [the social scientists] had gone off the rails.”The electronic battlefieldThe high profile of many DARPA inventions notwithstanding, what may be its most significant creation was a “system of systems” that is known today as the electronic battlefield. Jacobsen calls it “the most revolutionary piece of military technology of the twentieth century, after the hydrogen bomb.” This concept encompasses the use of remotely piloted attack drones and technology that enhances the ability of individual soldiers. Ultimately, DARPA research is expected to extend the concept into “transhumanism — the notion that man can and will alter the human condition fundamentally by augmenting humans with machines and other means.” One such effort is the DARPA exoskeleton, which bears an uncanny resemblance to The Terminator and Robocop. Another is an effort to “allow future ‘soldiers [to] communicate by thought alone.”The Pentagon’s Brain is crammed with chilling examples of the brave new world envisioned by DARPA scientists. I would like to think that every member of Congress would read this book — and then take a much more careful look at funding for the Pentagon. Fat chance, eh?About the authorAnnie Jacobsen is the author of three previous nonfiction books about the Pentagon. One relates the story of Operation Paperclip that brought Werner von Braun and other Nazi scientists to the U.S. following World War II. Another is a history of Area 51, which may be the best known and most notorious American military base in existence.

The Pentagon's Brain is investigative reporter Annie Jacobsen's masterpiece, a brilliant tour-de-force that led to her being a 2016 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History. It is the history of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon's military and technology think tank that has been helping the US maintain military dominance on the battlefield since the post-WWII glory days of nuclear weapons development. Thoroughly researched, yet eminently readable, Jacobsen writes history with the pacing and character development of a suspense thriller. You won't soon forget the people or the places described in this book (which is the key to compelling history). The subtitle, "An Uncensored History of DARPA, America's Top-Secret Military Research Agency" lives up to the reader's expectations. The truth is, no author has ever tackled DARPA quite like this. Building from research in her previous books as well as her past careers as an LA Times Magazine historical reporter and a PJMedia investigative reporter, Jacobsen covers what is for her familiar ground. She follows it up with impeccable research and then brings together all the seemingly disjointed pieces into a cognitive whole. The effect is a book that is as thorough as it is fascinating. Will better books about DARPA be written in the future? Undoubtedly, but only because future journalists will have Jacobsen to thank for showing them the way. Jacobsen writes with the puritan objectivity that sometimes gets her in trouble with readers and subjects that have strong biases but it works well in this book. Some readers may disagree with some of her conclusions (her battle of Mogadishu assessment misses the mark). But it's nearly impossible for an outsider to thoroughly capture all of the right stuff when researching classified history. And she closes the book with her signature personal appearance in the last chapter. Because after all, good writers not only write history, they sometimes become a part of it. Highly recommended. Especially for those interested in Cold War history, intelligence operations, technology, US government secret programs, government conspiracy, futurism, research and development, military affairs, and scientific innovations. Read this book.

I loved this book. I purchased it in KIndle form and then recently purchased the hard copy to reread with notes. The book gives you a history of the Pentagon, inception of alphabet agencies of the government and the origins of psychological warfare as well as past and some contemporary research into weaponry. The portion on the Vietnam war was very enlightening.I recommend this book as well as her Area 51 book.

A very good book for those people interested in scientific research, development and military applications of the new systems. A couple of systems such as the AR 15/M-16 rifle, drone aircraft, night vision goggles, and robotics are in use today and have been updated since the book was written. I highly recommend the book.

An interesting history of DARPA, DOD's advanced research arm. It is heavy going at times but very substantive. Some of the early chapters stuck me as a bit sensationalist, looking back 50 years after the very different times. The book might not be of interest to someone with little knowledge or interest in Defense issues

A really fine book that will shock you. Few have a clue about what goes on behind the scenes!

Mind boggling!! An awesome tale of the unbelievable brains working behind the scenes in keeping our country ahead of the curve in technology first by use by the military and then converting to commercial use. Amazing how this is all kept secret in front of our eyes. A must read for all.

Amazing description of H-bomb and subsequent nuclear race. Scares the Dickens out of you as it exposes crazy strategies studied but thankfully rejected. Ends with believable speculation of brain control research. Would rate higher but for slow mid-book coverage of well understood events . Could eliminate 30% without loss of significance.

I am in a Masters in Nursing Education program now and we use this book in my course of studies. I will keep it for my own personal reference book once I begin teaching. It is really helpful and easy to use. I like the book and will add it to my library.

I used this for my masters of nursing education program and rented it- bad choice. I used it for the next 4 semesters. Great book for nursing educators!! Wish I would have bought it to begin with. Spent way more money renting and extending the rental.

Really great book (as far as textbooks go) with regard mostly to nursing academia but also applicable to clinical education. Good resource for curriculum development and up to date with alternative teaching and learning strategies.

This is a great book that was required for my graduate program. The Kindle version is not a good version because the page has to be zoomed into in order to be read. You would be better served getting it on VitalSource bookshelf. The book is great and has excellent information!

As a MSN Nurse Educator student I found this book to be invaluable, it's like the bible for novice educators. This book has so much useful information!! I have used it in multiple classes and can't say enough good things about it.

Billings and Halstead being well known scholars of the nursing world have put together a very thoughtful and interesting book. Though it's for a class, has many great insights for every day life in the nursing world. Recommend.

As a nurse educator in a large health care system, I find this book quite useful for ready reference to my planning.

Wife needed this for her Masters degree. Can't beat the price and got it in 1 day!

My formal training in American History ended in high school, so I approached Meacham's book without a great deal of prior knowledge of the subject.I would say that this is not a good first book to read about Jackson. His childhood is covered in some detail, but the periods of his military career, his training as a lawyer, his term as a Tennessee congressman, are covered too briefly. Meacham states in his acknowledgment section that he has deliberately not attempted to cover Jackson entire life in detail. The eight years of Jackson's presidency are the focus of the book. The main issues that characterize Jackson's presidency: the threat of secession by South Carolina, the dissolution of the national bank, standoff with the French over the payment of reparations, expanded use of the presidential veto, etc., were covered in detail. However, as a newcomer to the subject, I sometimes could have used more context. For instance, there was not much discussion of how a national bank came to be and what the counter-arguments might have been for preserving it.On the other hand, there was (in my view) excessive detail given over infighting between some very minor characters in American history. In the acknowledgment section, Meacham explains that new information about these people had come to light since previous biographies on Jackson were published so Meacham deliberately focused on these matters. If you have read previous books on Jackson and on this period in American history, you may find some interesting new stuff in Meacham's book. But if you are a novice like myself, there must be a better book out there to start with.

Meacham is a great writer, and has overseen excellent research. While there may be better full-on biographies of Jackson, this one certainly is perhaps the best at focusing on how he changed the presidency, and Meacham makes a good case for Jackson being the first really "modern" president, who saw it as a national office, as the one person to represent all of the people. It's a little uncanny that this was written before the most recent election, and one can understand why the new President (or perhaps his advisors) are taken by Jackson: he fought against his own party almost as much as against the opposition, he was a determined nationalist, was quick to defend Anerica's "honor" (as well as his own when attacked, which was frequently). It's a good and timely read. I'd add a 5th star if there was a bit more bio of his pre-presidency life.

Jackson was never a favorite of mine, but there are things in this Pulitzer Prize-winning book of Jon Meacham’s that has me a bit more respectful of his presidency.Yes, he did break treaties and banish the Creek, Chickasaw, and Choctaw tribes to lands west of the Mississippi, fought two wars against the Seminoles, and later deported the Cherokee, all in the most gruesome manner possible. He also broke with fifty year-old precedent in the fledgling republic and took Presidential powers to new heights. And he introduced a new and raucous pioneer sensibility to the U.S.’s governance. But there are similarities to Jefferson that bear considering here.Jackson took the long view that Jefferson took in preserving the new republic and protecting it from enemies without. When France reneged on its debts to the U.S., Jackson demanded payment. When South Carolina threatened to nullify certain federal laws, particularly a tariff the slave-owning plantation owners didn’t like, he went to the brink of civil war to protect the union against such erosion. Parallel to that, he had political battles with the Northeast states over Abolition, these state issuing rumblings about secession should the U.S. continue to maintain slavery. And when he thought Nicholas Biddle was using his position as head of the National Bank to fight Jackson politically, Jackson withdrew federal money from the bank, risking economic catastrophe.Ever “The General,” Jackson fought such fights throughout his two terms in office. Meacham portrays him as a solitary sort, since Jackson’s wife, Rachel died just prior to his taking office, and Jackson never got over the loss. He did bring in family members, however, to support him emotionally and to serve politically and socially in roles necessary to his Presidency. Andrew and Emily Donelson became private secretary and White House hostess respectively to Jackson, and much of Meacham’s early tale seems rather gossipy concerning the Donelsons’ social feuds with Margaret Eaton, wife of one of Jackson’s advisors. But even here, Jackson’s aplomb under fire put oil on the intra-squabble waters. But why did Meacham win the Pulitzer for this book? I think for three reasons:He focused more on the man, his personality, and allowed that to dictate the history to which he was attached - rather than the other way around.Jackson’s efforts to resolve the nullification issue with South Carolina without bloodshed. He did in fact compromise with South Carolina in order to end this standoff peaceably.Meacham found new documents of historical significance, many of these regarding the social squabbles that haunted Jackson’s Presidency, and these added greatly to revealing Jackson the person, rather than Jackson the general, Indian fighter, and President. My rating: 17 of 20 stars

Firstly, I am a fan of Jon Meacham's writing style in general. He seems to have an agreeable way of illustrating his biographies in my opinion. I aso have always thought that Andrew Jackson was a highly underrated President and never given his just recognition in the history lessons of America. Jacksonian politics have been a widely effective and widely used political stratagem and he was one of the most influential Presidents in our history as a nation. As usual, Jon Meacham doesn't hold back. He shares the triumphs as well as the more questionable acts or attributes of his subject and I believe that is what draws me towards his work in the first place. A must read for the America history enthusiasts.

I chose this book because we are trying to win custody of our two precious grandchildren. I felt like we needed advice on this very important subject. This book has answered many of my questions. I feel much more confident in the outcome of our case. If you are wanting custody of your children or grandchildren, then I suggest you buy this book.

This is a very quick read. It gives you information that you need to have about what a guardian ad litem does and how you should interact with one. I found the information to be useful.

I am a GAL and if you were going to use a GAL this book would explain perfectly what you need to do to work wellwith the GAL. I plan to purchase this book for all my clients going through divorce and trying to find an equitablechild custody agreement.

Very helpful to understanding what the GAL does and wants from me and my child. I think it gets straight to the point.

This was easy to read and had good advice. I would like to note that the GAL programs vary by state such that in some states the guardian is a lawyer but on other states the guardian is a trained volunteer from the community. This is a distinction that I think should be known. Volunteers don't get paid whereas some of the lawyers that do GAL work do.

Great information and help to knowing how you can be prepared. A good book to read or even scroll through

Simple terminology and recommendations that can be found in many Blogs online. The "attorney" in the recommendation to buy this "brochure" is a marketing tool.

Please, for the love of god, buy this book instead of fighting your child custody case with legal information gleaned from sources found on the internet. This book was written by an attorney, with experience and an actual education, unlike Google, Esq.

"A feast of language, situations, characters, ironies, and a controlled moral intelligence . . . Bellow’s rapport with his central character seems to me novel writing in the grand style of a Tolstoy—subjective, complete, heroic." —Chicago Tribune"Herzog has the range, depth, intensity, verbal brilliance, and imaginative fullness—the mind and heart—which we may expect only of a novel that is unmistakably destined to last." —Newsweek "A masterpiece" —The New York Times Book Review

Herzog is a book about a middle aged man and his reflections on life. He's had 2 failed marriages. He's a somewhat itinerant academic. He thinks about philosophy and history and literature. He tries to make sense of things. Tries. There's not a whole lot of plot. It meanders. Lots of him recollecting things, going off on mental tangents, to the point where most of the time I can't tell where he is or what time of day it is. He talks to friends, lawyers, his daughter. He writes letters that he never sends to intellectuals, world leaders and anyone he's in mind of. He ponders (a lot). Occasionally he looks around his environment - the train to the beach, a cab, graffiti, the store, etc.Cons - it's rambling. I tried reading it a few times before I finally got through it. I kept waiting for something to start happening. I had to get past that expectation. Stuff does happen, but it's buried under an exceptional amount of discursion. Much of what happens is just in Moses Herzog's head.Pros - Rambling could also be considered, more charitably, as non-linear. Moses overthinks things, but this is something many people, if not all, can relate to. There is some good description. You get a certain feel for what life is like from the eyes of a particular individual. That is something I especially like from a book.In sum - I'm glad I read it, for the most part, but I wouldn't say it left me wanting more. My guess is that a lot of people can't get past the first chapter or two but that those that do really click with it. So the rating of the book is skewed that way. (Though maybe this is true for all books.)

This 1961book is still relevant. It may not appeal to everyone, but the tory of a philosophy teacher having a nerous breakdown and trying to recover by writing letters to people in power but never mailing them I sad and funny at the same times. His descriptions of Chicago, where I lived, are interesting in terms of the changes of the prsesseent . So many issues sthat poor Moses SHerzog raises still exist today. I enjoyed it very much.

As NYer book reviewer James Wood wrote, "Reading Bellow is a special way of being alive." "Henderson the Rain King" is my favorite title by Bellow, but Herzog comes second, worth a read and maybe a re-read. Bellow's characters always are robust, full to overflowing with life. It's good to meet them.

There's big-time grade inflation on this forum and no one is guiltier of this practice than me. I feel that if the book is entertaining, fits together tightly, stretches my thinking, and has passages of beauty, well, give it five stars. As the author of two novels that were finally self-published, I figure: Why make success even harder for the author?Within this context, I'd say that HERZOG is also a five-star book, except that it's much much better. This is because in each of these categories--entertainment, structure, insight, and beauty--HERZOG is truly superb. It's off the charts. The narrative line of HERZOG is simple. Essentially, this presents the thoughts and experiences of Moses Herzog over a few days as he travels from New York to Martha's Vineyard, back to New York, then to Chicago and ultimately to the Berkshires. But as Herzog travels (and writes his zany letters), Bellow provides a spectrum of many characters who are both fully realized and who offer some choice to Herzog, which is somehow a reflection of, or parallel to, his own problems. The amazing thing about this is that these choices always come out of character. No one in HERZOG is simply a thin veil worn by Bellow to preach or to fill out a point in the argument. Can the universe be considered benevolent? Or is reality crazy, cruel, and mercenary? These are the questions that torment Herzog on his journey. Certainly, there are plenty of high-minded professorial letters, with Herzog heckling Nietzsche and so on. But many of these letters are simply educated fun and it's the people that Herzog knows who really carry and explore the argument. It's absolutely brilliant stuff. At the same time, Bellow organizes many of these characters in "V". At one corner is Moses Herzog, a self-absorbed academic who, in his own mind, is benevolent albeit befuddled. At another is Madeline, his ex-wife, in whom craziness and selfishness mix in a single dark brew. Then, Bellow arranges his characters on this "V" so that differences gradually narrow and ultimately disappear in Herzog's brother Willie, who helps Herzog at his nadir.Near the end of this novel, Herzog plays a game with his little daughter June: try to distinguish between the world's shortest tall man and its tallest short man, its hairiest bald man and its baldest hairy man. Ultimately, this is also what Bellow does with his characters, showing that benevolence and pragmatism can finally exist in a single decent and sane person. The flawless structure of this novel, however, is only part of its brilliance. Here's my favorite bit of Bellow's prose. It's funny, probably a professorial reference to Whitman, and straight out of Herzog's character: "...what it means to be a man. In a city. In a century. In transition. In a mass. Transformed by science. Under organized power. Subject to tremendous controls. In a condition caused by mechanization. After the late failure of radical hopes. In a society that was no community and devalued the person. Owing to the multiplied power of numbers which made the self negligible. Which spent military billions against foreign enemies but would not pay for order at home..."READ THIS GREAT BOOK

I like this a lot more, understand much mord, than when it was required reading for me 35 years ago, so I'd recommend it, just not so much to young co!lege kids.

Love this book with such poignant drama around human relationships. SB is the master of seeing thru to the core of normal human desires. Last time i read this was before i had kids so the scenes with his little daughter are that much more gripping now. Great book.

Good, dense, full of 20th century philosophy, about the meaning of life. The reader better be knowledgeable about 20th century Western culture. Saul Bellow throws at you all that he knows, and he knows a lot.
