David Plowden is one of the best photographers in America and probably one of the least known of the greats. His images of small-town America and clean, direct, powerful and elegant. Every time I look at his photos I get an education about what a great photograph can be and I think of his work often when I am shooting or reviewing my own photos. Before traveling to Iowa where I occasionally go specifically to shoot, I always take this book out for ideas and to put me in the right frame of mind visually. It's easy to overuse the word, but David Plowden is a genius of a photographer. Every serious photographer should search out his many books and study them.

David Plowden spent nearly fifty years (from around 1950 until he stopped photographing in 2008) meticulously documenting the world he grew up in before it vanished for good. Small Town America is perhaps the purest distillation of his work. Each turn of the page presents another immaculately crafted photograph of a Main Street storefront, the lobby of a fading hotel, or the interior of a general store. The composition, framing, and Plowden's superb darkroom skills all combine to present the clearest possible image. Each rewards thoughtful study.Having grown up in such a town, and having seen it "developed" out of existence, I find Plowden's book unbearably poignant.It's a minor treasure.

Mr. Plowden's photos take you to another place and time. He fulfills the promise of a glimpse of unembellished reality outside the city.

Great book. Really touches on the life in small towns

Though published in 1994 and photographed in small town America I can say that three of the places David Plowden visited are still on the map and thanks to Google's Street View I've been able to see the same shot he saw in Frederick, South Dakota, Janesville, Minnesota and Council Grove, Kansas. The same buildings, railroad tracks and street furniture are still there. It's nice to know that these places still exist though admittedly they might be facing a slow decay.The 111 lovely photos really do capture the feel of towns away from the strip malls, housing sub-divisions, freeways and the rest of visual progress. Plowden has managed to capture a quietness and honesty that seems to exist in these places. I've looked through these photos several times over the years and I always close the book with the feeling that it is just one place. The editorial flow of images is just perfect to suggest Anytown USA. From Main Street with its railroad tracks, exterior and interiors of small shops, a bank, library, pre-1950 housing and inside rooms, small commercial concerns (and sometimes large grain elevators) to the few portrait shots, they all work so wonderfully well.David Plowden has produced twenty or so books, with a constant theme, it seems to me, of capturing the ruggedness of a slightly past America. The Far Side was syndicated in more than 1,900 daily newspapers from 1980 to 1995, when Gary Larson retired. Gary Larson is one of the greatest and original cartoonists ever!! His subject matter never goes out of date. His somewhat bizarre and deranged way of looking at life on earth and beyond -- from both a human, animal, supernatural and alien perspective is enlightening; and morbidly hilarious.

My 11 yr old son LOVES the Far Side books. He gets a lot of the humor, although there are some things that are over his head and need explaining. We have the whole collection.

I got this for my husband to complete his collection. He loves it, just like all the other galleries. He reads it to the kids at night sometimes and everyone is cracking up.

About the Author

Colleen E. Carney, PhD, is associate professor and director of the Sleep and Depression Laboratory at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. She was a National Sleep Foundation Pickwick Fellow at Duke University Medical Center, where she was on faculty, and she founded the Comorbid Insomnia Clinic at the Duke Insomnia and Sleep Research Program. Carney is well-known for her publications in the area of insomnia and its relation to other disorders, most notably, depression, anxiety, and pain. She has made numerous presentations at national research conferences, including the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) and the Association for Professional Sleep Societies (APSS). She is the current president of the ABCT's Special Interest Group for insomnia and other sleep disorders. Currently, Carney is conducting research, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, on treating insomnia in people with depression. Â Rachel Manber, PhD, is professor at Stanford University and director of the Insomnia and Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine. She has treated hundreds of patients with insomnia, many of whom also have other medical or psychiatric disorders, and has trained physicians, psychologists, and nurses to treat insomnia without medication. A substantial portion of her research, funded by the National Institute of Health, focuses on the cognitive behavioral treatment of insomnia. I've read a lot of books on sleep. This one actually explained some concepts in a way that made something click for me, that sleep should be effortless. And that the body has a built-in mechanism called sleep drive that makes it possible for you to get quality sleep on a regular basis. It is worthwhile to do the 14-day sleep diary, even though it does seem a little confusing to try to track your sleep when you're losing consciousness at some random hour in the early morning! If you can get a general notion of how much sleep your body can get, then you can set up a schedule that works for you. What I really like is the focus on quality of sleep versus quantity. Even though it seems counter-intuitive to someone who struggles to sleep and has insomnia, spending a shorter amount of time in bed and getting up when you wake up even if it's at 4 AM in the morning does retrain your body to a more regular sleep schedule. It does take time and you do need to keep working on it, but this book was helpful and concise in a way that made a difference for me. If you have chronic insomnia, you may never be a good sleeper, but at least this book provides a structure and some tools that can help you sleep better over time. At any rate, any time you have a bad night, you can console yourself with the thought that you are building up an incredible sleep drive for the next night. :)

This is not a book for people who've seen graphic notetakers or facilitators and want a tactical guide to the craft -- though the appendices alone will inspire you to bust out of your linear, tiny-notebook mode of recording. Instead, this is a much deeper discussion of presence, of group dynamics, and of finding one's role in the world, in the moment, in a group. It is a beautiful, authentic, personal, reflective account by a practitioner that you will want to keep on your shelf and pass along to others who strive to be more in tune with their individual and collective potential.

After reading Bird's Generative Scribing, I decided to attend her recent training in Toronto. Both experiences were so powerful. Somehow she manages to transfer her wisdom into the book, while within the training, the book's wisdom is brought to life with a similar "art" of expression and skill. You do not need to be a graphics expert or even a good doodler to make sense and utility of this process. She rightly suggests this is part of the new social communication skills required in a complex world. I whole-heartedly agree with her. Dive in and experience for yourself...you'll quite literally see and communicate a new world as a result.

This piece of art is pure poetry for (and of) the soul. Kelvy has a way with words and phrases that is just magical. I love every detail about this book, from the sensuous texture of the cover which makes it almost warm to the touch, to the single-word chapter titles, to the bold brushstrokes that remind me of Chinese calligraphy and ink, to the layout and composition which actually make it very easy and natural to approach reading in a non-linear way, to (in the author's words): "jump around at will... Pass over what you don't need today. Find what resonates and dwell there."The way in which Kelvy shares the generative process is simple, yet powerful. There are precious moments of vulnerability and humour. I feel this is a work of empowerment, that should encourage us all to explore scribing with more courage, and a new desire to let our hands and gut guide us. I love the wide margin space that has been expressly designed for note-taking and scribbling: it makes the book much more interactive. I believe something actually happens differently in the way we read and feel the text, as we make our own marks on the page. Meaning becomes more familiar, the process creates new connections of thought and feeling.

Cinderella is an old story most of us grew up with and loved. Some of us older folks might still have a copy of it in our bookshelves, saving it for grandchildren to come. However, this new edition of this ancient tale comes to glory by the exquisite illustrations by Kveta Pacovska, an artist I have been following around as groupies do with rock bands. Absolutely brilliantly done. The adapted text by Charles Perrault is wonderful topping it off on the last page with two poems about morals. This book will shine in any book shelf.

Perfect for use in classroom with fairy tale unit and comparisons.

The book arrived in good time and was in great condition. I will be using this for a Fairy Tale Unit in my classroom.

I chose this book for my granddaughter based on other reviews because it was said to be a translation of the original story that was written by a French author. The illustrations are excellent except for one thing - Cinderella does not look "one thousand times more beautiful" than her ugly stepsisters in the illustrations. Might this teach a young girl that beauty may lie in what one wears? Although the story contained a few words (such as "wicked") I had to explain to my four year old granddaughter, she told me she liked it.

I love Cinderella stories and each year it seems my students share the love. They get a kick out of the many different versions available now. This one is the classic of classics.

Not worth the printed pages as very little was useful. Internet offers same information. Needed for desk but don't recommend purchasing as expensive for the small amount of content. Nurses should not be required to purchase and make publishers rich, sad but this is big business I don't endorese.

Did I really pay $20 for this??? It’s maybe twenty pages long, flimsy, basically a brochure or pamphlet. This was required for my grad school class, but I feel so robbed! What a waste of money for such a tiny thing!

I purchased this book in preparation for taking the CNE exam. Please save your money. It's like a little brochure rather than a book! All information contained within this book can be found on the NLN's website for free.
