I just gave this book as a gift to a new mother. We used this book with our kids, and my wife and I thought that Dr. Brazelton's approach was very common sense and helpful. He covers lots of topics that we would never have thought of, and you can just feel how loving and kind he is in the way he describes the development of children. Helped us not to overreact too much. I know lots of young parents look for everything on the internet nowadays, but I think having a book available is a really nice resource. I'll probably buy it again for other young parents.
As a long time psychiatrist myself, I have seen many guides to understanding infants /toddlers / beginning childhood primers way back to Dr. Spock!Brazelton is the perfect synthesis of excellent pediatricics and psychiatric technique.“Touchpoints†are perfect expressions of what he achieved through presenting the normal development of children eith varying personality styles and the resultant responses elicited in parents of these normal children (often vice versa),Ultimately, the overriding message is that children are compelled through certain growth steps and problems, and that parents should not see these as personal fights or severe signs of abnormality.In this day of “ spectrum disorders gone berserk†Brazelton reads better than ever!
This is actually the second copy I bought of this book. I loved it so much I bought it for another new mother as it has helped my greatly as a new mom. It was recommended to me by my pediatrician and has been spot-on with my daughter’s development. I quote it to my husband regularly much to his slight irritation. A great read!
Around 11 months, my kiddo started becoming obsessed with walking, but he lacked the balance to even stand on his own. Consequently, he screamed all the time. He was inconsolable. It was awful. I took him to the pediatrician, who was concerned he had an ear infection. When it wasn't that and he seemed otherwise fine physically, she recommended this book. I read the chapters on 9 month and 1 year olds, and it was like Dr. Brazelton was describing my kid. He talked about how some kids become so fixated on walking that if they're not walking, they're miserable. It's a phase and they grow out of it, especially if they do start walking. I felt such relief reading this!The book is divided by months and stages. It's very clear and calm, and did not make me feel like an inadequate parent failing my child (as a lot of parenting books seem to do). I find most parenting books to be condescending and pressuring. I did not find Touchpoints to be this way. I found Dr. Brazelton to be a source of calm--if I could have him as my kid's pediatrician, I would jump at the opportunity!
This is a fantastic book to read as your child grows and changes. I bought this copy for a friend because I love my own so much. Brazelton outlines what to expect in the cognitive, emotional and physical development of your child within ranges of ages because, as he notes, all children grow at different rates. I appreciate the down-to-earth yet professional tone used and I will and have recommend this book to many friends and family members.
My good friend gave me her copy of Touchpoints when my daughter was born. This book is amazing. Brazelton is always spot-on in his predictions. One example is in the 2 year old section where he says the kids will walk into the exam room like they own the place. I read that part at around 18 months and my kid was shying away at that point. I thought, 'There's no way she'll do that.' Fast forward to her 2 year checkup and sure enough, she walks in like she owns the place.I like his advice and his overall attitude. The potty training advice is some of the best I've seen and I've read a lot of baby/kid books.This is tops on my standard baby shower gift list.
This is very useful for understanding infant behavior. Some of the material is outdated, such as advice to delay introducing common food allergens. I would suggest conducting additional research before following the advice given.
I love that Dr. Brazelton can explain childhood from a child's eyes. Reading his books has helped me understand why my son acts a certain way from his perspective. I don't know that any other 0-3 book does that. Every time my child was in a stage that was frustrating, I would pick up this book, and sure enough, he would explain why my child was acting the way he was. It has helped me understand my son better and not get as frustrated.My other greatest lesson from this book was that very young children go through transition/adjustment periods. When I would get frustrated with a behavior, I learned to wait through it, knowing it would get better in a short period of time. Dr. Brazelton gave me hope, encouragement and lots of terrific help (from a pediatrician who really tries to UNDERSTAND a child, not just treat problems).
