About the Author

Firooz Zahedi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1949 and attended secondary school in England before moving to the United States in 1969 to study at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. After a short career as a diplomat in Washington, DC, he went on to attend the Corcoran School of Art and graduated with a degree in Visual Communication. He became a photographer for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine and moved to Los Angeles in 1978 with his friend, Elizabeth Taylor, as her personal photographer on a film set. In 1990 he signed a contract with Vanity Fair. His editorial work has appeared internationally on the covers of other magazines such as Vogue, GQ, Town&Country, Glamour, InStyle, Time, Architectural Digest, and Entertainment Weekly. His portraits, fine art photographs, and collages have been shown in prominent galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Basel, London, and Dubai as well as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach. Firooz and his wife divide their time between their homes in Los Angeles, New York, and Palm Beach.

What a fantastic book! This is not merely a picture book, although the pics are very personal and plentiful. The story is one from the heart of a very close friend, and provides insight into one of the world's last film legends. A bawdy, lovable woman that lived an amazing life. I have thoroughly enjoyed Zahedi's homage to Elizabeth Taylor, and highly recommend it.

Although the story is very sad and deserves an entire different review, my comments are focused on the writing of it. There are a multitude of grammar, syntax, spelling and typing mistakes that greatly affect its presentation. The story lacks flow and is shy of a negligent journalistic presentation. Editing is an almost non-existing factor.

Every teen girl? NEEDS to read this book. It is a stark reminder that our world IS NOT safe and that even in small town America? Horrible crimes like human trafficking CAN and do happen. This book is raw with emotion and told in the very thoughts and words of the victim herself, a young, vulnerable, naive and trusting teen. Gritty, brutally honest and tragic...One error of poor judgement? Will forever change this young life.

The evil that human beings are capable of is mind boggling. I don't understand it. This book brings home the reality of sex trafficking. I recommend it to anyone trying to help the victims as it gives a very clear picture of what it is really like and the pure hell they go through.

The story needs to be told and it's terrifying! However, as others have said, there are many typos, grammatical errors and a general lack of proofing that diminish the pleasure and ease of reading it!

The book offers a short and informative look into sex slavery an human trafficking. It tells a story of nativity and hope. It is one girl's determination to beat the odds and right a wrong. I pray she is in s better place today.

I'm glad I read this book. I'M WONDERING HOW the average person could help stop this? This book gives us a look at the depravity of man. Every person should should read this book! I gave this rating because of the content. More people need to learn about what is going on, and someone needs to get people organized to catch those who are running these slave rings.

This book was very emotional. It's a shame what happens to innocent people. There is no reason for any of the survivors to EVER feel guilty or they deserved it for any reason. There a'll it of sick people if you can even call them that, that prey on others.

I immediately shared it with my teenagers. It could be used in the context of a teenage or twenty-something alcohol abuse awareness course. The story is just entertaining and "naughty" enough to hold young people's attention while the educational value slowly, well ... bubbles up!

A long overdue glimpse into the world of addicted animals. This book is really fun and is a great way to ease your kids into understanding addiction. Best to teach them young about the horrors of excess. Even if you don’t have kids this is still a fun read. I recommend it.

About the Author

Bruno Scrosati is Senior Professor at the University of Rome La Sapienza. He received the title of Doctor in Science “honoris causa”,from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and from the Chalmers University in Sweden. He is European Editor of the “Journal of Power Sources” and author of more than 450 scientific publications.Prof. Dr. Jürgen Garche has more than 40 years of experience in battery and fuel cell research & development. In his academic career the focus was on material research. Thereafter, he worked on and directed cell and system development of conventional (LAB, NiCd, NiMH) and advanced (Li-Ion, NaNiCl2, Redox-Flow) batteries. His experience includes also fuel cells (mainly low temperature FCs) and supercaps. He established the battery & FC division of the ZSW in Ulm (Germany), an industry related R&D institute with about 100 scientists and technicians. His interest in battery safety goes back to the work with the very large battery safety testing center of the ZSW. In 2004 he founded the FC&Battery consulting office FCBAT; furthermore he is a senior professor at Ulm University.

It isn't so much about desire - feelings of love are guides to helps us identify and keep an evolutionary fit mate. It is really about the strategies used to battle other suitors and attract mates.The material can be found other places - mating is a common topic of evolutionary psychology books. The presentation seems repetitive; the same basic strategies have implications for finding, keeping, and leaving a mate and also explain how we pursue casual or extramarital sex. What makes this book worth reading, above similar books, is Buss test the theories by tying them to survey results. The theories explain the results.For humans, much of the competing is verbal - using social influence to degrade competitors. This is a minor topic.The focus is on how we select mates so that our genes are given every possible advantage to dominate future generations. Men and women have competing goals. Men want to maximize the quantity and quality of their mates and invest as little as possible in their offspring. Women want to maximize the quality of their mates and extracts as much parental investment from the fathers as possible.Mating customs - monogamy, marriage - are an uneasy truce between the sexes. Monogamy - for example - benefits average to below average men the most. Marriage and child support laws are a way of codifying parental investment.Despite our traditions of monogamy and marriage, we constantly try to assess our value as a mate. Your reproductive value and your behavior are not static. Decisions to leave mates are based upon assessment of relative value. Casual sex and affairs are attempts to assess our value.

David Buss's book is great. He lays out a very clear and coherent theory behind how human sexuality evolved and compares our sexuality with that of other species.A must read for anyone who is interested in human nature!

Had to buy this for a class. Interesting read, Buss discusses things in everyday language while keeping you engrossed in the story. I learned some interesting things about mating and sexuality. The one drawback is that there were a couple chapters I felt were too long and a bit boring. Overall, a good read.

Intriguing non-fiction for those interested in psychology, especially having to do with evolution and mating. Lots of interesting facts and studies. You'll learn a lot about your species and yourself. Buss does tend to be a little repetitive with his writing at times and some topics are over done, but that is often how scientific writing works: say what you're going to say, say it, then say what you've said. You can definitely see this method in his writing but, overall it is well written and kept my attention. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I think it's important for us all to know what science has learned about our own species, our own minds and subconciences.

David Buss is absolutely amazing. No, this is not a self help guide for learning how to pick up or attract the opposite sex. There is no advice here on how to handle your wife or girlfriend. This is also not a polemic rant on either why women are supposed to stay in the kitchen or how men and women are still unequal. This is pure, unadultered, exhaustively researched and scientific information on differences between men and women, as well as similarities, as well as what drives us to seek out sex and why.I was intrigued by this book and its premise after reading some articles the author wrote as sources for a paper I did on attraction. Purchasing this book was not a disappoint at all, and I only hope his other books are just as insightful, informative and well-written as this one.

Brilliant piece uncovering the mystery of why we observe so-called works of art clearly void of artistic talent sell for exorbitant amounts of money. I like to consider myself an amateur art connoisseur, but maybe I am unworthy of such a title since I fail to comprehend how contemporary works can fetch more than a medieval masterpiece at auction. The author of this book has provided me much clarity on the absurdity of art values. His writing style is entertaining, intriguing, and practical.I plan on acquiring his more recent works (2 books as of this review date), which appear to expound on this subject.

I am not in any way involved in Art nor do I own any art and enjoyed this book tremendously. Being in real estate and finance made this book ever more compelling to read. There are a lot of parallels in the psychology and economics of trading modern art, real estate and any other alternative asset which makes this book a great way to force lateral thinking between two, arguably, unrelated sectors. I couldn't recommend this book more to anyone involved in finance or the trading of securities and assets. I wish this author wrote about other industries as the book details just about every revenue stream, challenge and opportunity in the dealer, auction house market. Anyhow, do read this book. It is quite good.

I have recently read a number of books on art collecting and more specifically, contemporary art collecting. The $12 Million Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art, as compared to other books on this subject, provides a 360 degree view of the contemporary art market. The book provides a view of the market from the perspective of the collector, dealer and auction house and really gives the reader a sense of how the market operates and the pros and cons of this unique manner in which art is bought and sold. I enjoyed this book so much that I decided to purchase Mr. Thompson’s more recent book on the same topic - The Supermodel and the Brillo Box: Back Stories and Peculiar Economics from the World of Contemporary Art.

Written by an economist who had access to the most important actors (collectors, dealers, auctioneers, curators, art fair organizers...) while doing his research, this book is an in-depth study of the way the contemporary art market functions, the part played by auction houses, dealers, big collectors, museums, the sometimes incestuous relationship that exists between all of them, how art is priced, how auctions are organized (on and off the scene), how gallery shows are sold (or pre-sold), the importance of art branding in creating an artist's reputation (the brand being the auction house, the gallery, the artist himself, a museum, or even a collector if he is important enough)and, most importantly, how these art brands are created. One insightful conclusion is that the art market, and contemporary art in particular, is as much brand-driven as any other high-end luxury market. Through case studies (the dealers Larry Gagosian or Jay Joplin, the artists Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Jeff Koons or Andy Warhol, the auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's, the collectors Charles Saatchi or Ronald Lauder...) and broader considerations on the overall economics of art, the author manages to write a book which is at the same time well informed (with some slight spelling mistakes though, e.g. the Portuguese collector Jose Berardo becoming "Joe Bernardo", or the dealer Faggionato sometimes mistakenly spelt "Faccionato"), to the point and easy to read. Among the more than twenty books available on this topic on Amazon's, this one is the best in my opinion (and I've read quite a few...).

Probably the most interesting conclusion I draw is based on my new understanding of why Stephen A Cohen is such a good and successful art collector / investor. When one achieves a high status in the contemporary art world, as has Stephen A Cohen, he gets 1) first looks at hot artists at discounted prices and 2) has the ability to turn a no-name artist into something more by simply buying his/her work. Thus, he easily gets the best deals and investment opportunities within the Contemporary art world. I liken this to insider trading in the world of stock trading, but in the contemporary art market, unlike the stock market, insider trading is legal - so no wonder he like the contemporary art market so much. To the victor go the spoils!

This is a very well documented encapsulation of all that is horrifyingly wrong with the art market today, esp in the USA and London where quality and talent is totally subjugated to and trumped by sensation, trendiness and outrage. No one is taught craft anymore with the result that the discerning eye in art has ceased to exist. Where is Robert Hughes when we need him? Don Thompson is doing a great job filling his shoes. The emperors are starkers, and the Gagosians of the world are, to my mind, making a fortune off of it. Caveat emptor !!!!
