This was exactly what my wife was looking for. Easy to use recipes with a little history thrown in.

Since I spend every 6 months in Portugal I wanted to learn to cook like the Portuguese, I always come home 2 kgs heavier as just have to sample all the dishes on offer. What a beautiful culture and wonderful cuisine. I found this book helpful in that it had the recipes I needed to bring Portugal home.

I have worked through most of the chapters of this book and found it to be an excellent self teaching book. There are numerous, fully worked out examples that help the reader understand how both the modeling and simulation aspects come together. The book has a number of example problems that build on themselves throughout the chapters of the book as one goes from system modeling to system simulation, culminating in complete problem and solution by the end of the book. What this book does best is marry together concepts of modeling, analysis and control into worked out examples. The reader would probably get the most out of this book after having been exposed to college level physics and college level controls engineering.There are roughly two parts of the book, analytical modeling and simulation. The first five chapters pertain to modeling of physical systems and how to setup the system dynamical equations. The remaining chapters are dedicated to simulation and analysis, including Simulink simulation, analytical solution and basic PI and PID control. The last chapter presents fully worked out case studies which ties together the methods from the other chapters. There are problem sets at the end of the book, but no solutions / answers, which would have been nice to help readers measure their understanding.Overall, this book provides an excellent introduction to physical system modeling, simulation and analysis and is replete with worked examples, making the book ideal for self study. The lack of solutions / answers to end of chapter problems is unfortunate, but the number of examples presented in the text makeup for this.

Bjarne Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language, Third Edition (Addison-Wesley, 1997) has been available for several months. This work, by the creator of C++, is the definitive treatment of the subject and has been since its first edition in 1987. I must confess that I did not care for the first edition. I had expected a tutorial approach as elegant as the classic K&R white book. But then, K&R was about C, a programming language that supported a familiar programming model. The C++ programming model was new to most of us ten years ago, and Stroustrup's first edition was daunting, to say the least. Looking at it now, I find it far less so and much easier to read. Comparing the first and third editions of The C++ Programming Language provides insight into how the C++ language has grown and changed in the past decade. The third edition has almost three times the number of pages and a slightly different organization. Whereas the first edition included a 67-page language reference manual at the end, the third edition includes only a language grammar section to represent formal language definition. This is appropriate. The ANSI/ISO Standard document, which is now the formal language and library definition, is itself about 750 pages long. Stroustrup plans to publish The Annotated C++ Language Standard (coauthored by Andrew Koenig, the ANSI C++ committee's Project Editor) sometime this year. The third edition takes a tutorial approach with many of Stroustrup's personal programming philosophies. The author's explanations of how he uses language features provide examples for learning the behavior of those features. He also explains code idioms that some programmers routinely use but that he finds inappropriate. As much as possible, the third edition reflects Standard C++. When small language features are found to be missing, particularly new ones, Stroustrup pledges to add them to a future printing... This book is an essential addition to a C++ programmer's library. It is not for dummies, and it wouldn't be my first choice for an entry-level, self-help tutorial on C++ for beginning programmers. It is, however, an excellent textbook for programmers who are self-motivated and students who study under the watchful care of a skilled instructor. As an experienced C++ programmer, I find the book useful as a reference to language usage and behavior. The author invented the language and then stayed close to the standardization and innovation process for the duration, always maintaining a careful vigilance over the evolution of his brainchild. I had been working with C++ for 4 years before I moved to C#. After 6 years of C# development I wanted to refresh my C++ knowledge so I took this book. It was great choice. Many things that I hadn't understood well were clarified, I learnt a lot of things about STL features that I hadn't used before. It was also very useful that author presents his motives why he made some design decisions when he was designing the language.When reading the book you can also see some 'problematic' parts of C++. Especially Standard Libary is overcomplicated and hard to use (nearly not using polymorphism because polymorphic calls are too slow). Standard library also doesn't have too much features especially when you compare it to standard libraries of other languages. But of course this is not a problem of the book. Fortunately C++ 11 has more funcionality. (The book is written for C++ 03 standard).One thing I don't like is naming convention. Function names like 'f', 'g' or field names like 'm' or 's' are not easy to read and suitable just for very trivial examples but not well suited for custom classes.'The C++ Programming Language: Special Edition' is excellent book, but just for experienced C++ developers. If you are new to C++ and don't have much experience with C and OOP, choose some other book. Even though Bjarne Stroustrup presents philosophy behind object oriented programming I have seen better explanations of OOP. For beginners this could be insufficient.So if you have never used C++ I recommend you to choose some other book. But if you are experienced C++ developer who wants to improve your C++ knowledge 'The C++ Programming Language: Special Edition' is the great choice.

If you are serious about learning C++ you really need to own this book.While I probably wouldn't recommend this as a "first book" to learn any programming language it is definitely one that you should keep around as a reference. If you pick up a lesser C++ book like C++ for Dummies,Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days (5th Edition) (Sams Teach Yourself), or Beginning C ++ Through Game Programming, Second Edition you'll want to hang on to this one to clarify any ambiguity.If you've used C++ and just need a reference this book will definitely help out.This is hands-down the best C++ book for anyone who really wants to use C++, it will take you through all of the features of the language and not only explain what each feature is for, but also why it was included, and the best way to use it.I hope I'm not being too repetitive, but BUY THIS BOOK.

This book has everything it advertises. It gives you an in-depth description of the language and plenty of examples of how to use it. It should be every C++ programmer's primary reference.I did find one problem with the book: It does not sufficiently describe how the default compare, assign, and copy operations work. I recently had a problem at work with the default comparison of two instances of an object in an embedded system, and the only way I could debug the problem was by adding debug trace until I narrowed it down to a bad implementation of the default "!=" operator in g++ 4.1.2. Overriding the operator solved the problem, but it took us two days to figure out that the bug was with the compiler and not our code.For this reason, I give an otherwise outstanding book only 4 stars.

This is [1] outstanding if you want to just sit back, relax, and read the details about a particular C++ topic BUT is [2] poor if you just want a summary of a feature, [3] poor if you need a quick and handy reference (the operative words here are 'quick' and 'handy'. Kalev's "ANSI/ISO C++" is better for this purpose), [4] average if you need to know the why-s behind C++ (better to just get Stroustrup & Ellis "The Annotated C++ Reference Manual"), [5] poor if you want to learn C++ but have no background in C. Well ... on another plus side, it is much more readable and better looking than the 2nd edition.

From my years of being a C++ programmer, this is definitely the one of the best reference books I've ever used. This book cover all the aspects of C++, one of the most complicated programming language, with a nice detail of everything, including STL (Standard Template Library, the C++ new standard library).However, this book is, like all of the previous editions, NOT a language/programming tutorial. To read this book, you will need tons of C++ & OOP knowledge, even if you are an ace C programmer (since C is quite different from C++ in "The Way of Thinking"). Especially, if you are a novice, please read one or two "good" primer book before coming to this one, otherwise you will get lost easily. (Believe me, it's happened to me before when I tried to read the 2nd edition).Moreover. In this edition, the author, Bjarne Stroustrup, added 2 more appendixes on "locales" and "standard library exception safety", which would make this book even more useful and more complete than any previous editions. I've been a fan of Ripley's since I was a kid and would watch the show in reruns on TV. I have visited three museums so far and hope to do more because they are so fun. When given the chance to check out this book I went for it and was not disappointed. It is a great coffee table book that you can peruse whenever you get bored or just waiting around. I do a lot work that requires wait time of uploading and processing, so this is my standby book to grab and read a section when I can. The nice thing is that you don't have to commit to a chapter rather just read one entry and move on.Some of my favorites are the entries on Coney Islands, the numerous medical conditions (warning - they can get kinda graphic but that's to be expected) and the crazy art they detail. There is also lots on animals, wired places and strange record breakers. The book has a large assortment of topics so it's not easy to get bored by one. There are plenty of pictures and lots of short easy to digest stories.My only caution is that the book has some bizarre and gross stuff in it and it may not be for kids. I've come to expect that kind of thing from Ripley's so it's no shock to me but as a review I felt I should mention it.Overall a fun book to grab and peruse. With hundreds of story you have ample material for months of conversation starters and beyond.

Every year I buy my son The Guinness book of World Records for Christmas. This year I decided I was going to give this book annually to my daughter at Christmas so they both get one.I wasn't sure how this book would compare to the world record book or if they were even the same. I actually found that while it is different, it's quite an enjoyable read. If you've never tried this book, rest assured, it's very interesting and informative.The book has a lot of crazy facts in it. There is also A lot of pictures in it, which is great.and although there is definitly a "fun factor" to this book, there is also educational value to it as well.I think this is going to become a Christmas tradition. Buying my daughter a new edition each year. This is a great present for all ages of the family.

I love this book! At first, I had my doubts. It seemed unnecessary to me. Isn't all this information just a click away on the internet? Now, however, I am a believer. I started flipping through it, page by page, full of mind-boggling and interesting facts, accomplishments, and unbelievable occurrences. I appreciated learning about the history of Ripley and his desire to travel the globe, even to my home country of Colombia, in search of amazing life mysteries, rarities, and discoveries. I love that I can go page by page or just open it randomly and I will learn something that will ignite electrical currents in my brain. I keep it on my coffee table in my living room and I know that guests will be delighted when they peruse through the pages and read the fascinating anecdotes contained within. Ultimately, yes, a lot of this information is probably a click away, but it's also here beautifully compiled and neatly organized with clever design accompanied by unique photographs. I definitely recommend it. It's a hoot!

Not the book I remember,that told you stuff like the world record for eating the most marshmallows without swallowing any(31 when I lookedit up in Ripley's in the '70s)or the national record for being on the line the longest time without a promotion or a raise (that wa made in the 30's,38 years.and still stood in the late 70s.)But try to find facts like that or who ate the most sugar products without getting diabetes in the Ripley's of today.Now it's got proveable,cold,hard facts,so the difference is like having a textbook versus having a tabloid.

Warning! This Kindle edition book is not format friendly with Amazon's Fire HD 8! The print is small, without scalable text sizes, outside of magnification features of the HD 8, which are horrible for this e-book! Navigation throughout is a nightmarish chore, from page flipping, resizing fonts, bookmarks, horizontally stuck without a vertical option, along with some facts being cut off from the terrible formatting of this title! (I only wished that I would've previewed it before buying, but I thought that Ripley's Believe It Or Not Kindle editions, would've had the same quality of care in the formatting department as other titles as EC Comics?! It's my first disappointment in regards to a Kindle edition book from Amazon!) Caveat Emptor... Buyer beware!

Normally I'm one to get something such as Guinness book of world records or something to that affect, but went with this book instead. I have to say it a lot more fun to read and learn about. It also makes a great talking piece when friends come over! It's a very enjoyable read for anyone who love quirky facts.

As a teacher I couldn't wait to place this book in my classes library. The book didn't even make it into my library before the boys in my class were dying to get their hands on it. From the cover to the last page, this book captures every child's attention. Each 'article' is full of captivating pictures and facts, making easy for kids to understand. I can't wait to use it to teach nonfiction text features. This book is a perfect edition to any classroom or children's library at home who loves interesting facts. Even with its sturdy hard book construction, I can see this book 'failing apart' from the amount of use from my students this school year.

I originally bought this book for a nephew, however after thumbing through it and catching myself multiple times saying, "Wow! Really?" I decided to keep a copy for my coffee table. Sitting at home during Irma this book was awesome and gave me not only something to read but things to talk about with company. I highly recommend as a gift or as something fun for yourself.

So, the one previous review of this little work shows the painful ignorance of the reviewer. Minnich’s book isn’t a book seeking to refute Atheism as such. Anyone with a modicum or reading ability would realize this. That being said, to the book! Munich does a good job of laying out a common problem for intellectual theists. Often we have this issue of finding atheism to be a viable or live option, even though we know it is riddled with logical problems. Whence comes this psychological phenomena? Minnich’s books seeks to answer that question.

Here is yet another fabulous book for our "secular age." However, the angle taken in this little essay is still unique, especially in regards to the way in which modern Christians in the West, in a sort of default way, feel as though the world in which they live is so far removed from the "enchanted cosmos" of previous periods and generations. As such, there is a powerful tendency among us to "lose" our faith in way that is less akin to being argued out of it and more like having it expire and drain out because we cannot, through our own willpower and mental faculties, keep up with the secular onslaught and maintain it in the midst of it all. Thus, our "apologetic" in the 21st-century might need to shift and look a little less like learning to rationally and philosophically judo chop our opponents (as it did in the 20th-century) and more like seeking ways to recover an enchanted cosmos, through historic worship, spiritual disciplines, and so on.So here's the bottom line: If you ever wonder why atheism has such a "pull" even on Christians, this book is for you. If you ever wonder how Christians can move forward despite our increasingly complex and secular times, this book is for you. But if you're looking for a book that will equip you with answers and arguments for your discussions with atheists, this isn't exactly what you're looking for (though I really think you should still read it).

The author is fair and square about his take on the subject of atheism. Some good points that will make you think about the whole subject.

Not a typical apologetics book. Helpful to understand the "aesthetic appeal" of atheism to both believers and non-believers.

It was also nice to see how they revere their women in their families. They look after them and treat them nicely.Ro and Chloe hit it off rather well from the beginning. Ro does what he has to do to prove to Chloe that she is safe with him, but NOT his prisoner. He leaves her with a ton of cash, keys to multiple cars and his cell number if she should ever need his help. When he returned home, all of it was still there including her.She has trust issues (understandably), and she learns she can trust the MM and also Allie.This book has twists and turns. Susan Stoker really kept me kn the edge of my seat and constantly zigged when i was ready for the zag.This is a great read!!Sooooo…Does Chloe finally get her life back from her brother?Does Ro get his woman?Can they both survive the mafia?Does Leon get his comeuppance?What was this about squirrel farts???you'll need to read this book!! You will NOT be sorry!!

These characters have great chemistry. A good human interest story, shining a light on the horror of sex trafficking.A well done romantic suspense, “Defending Chloe” can be read alone. The next book in the series is set up at the end to whet your appetite!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I also purchased a copy.I just loved this book. I adore the premise for the entire series, rescuing women and children from abusing situations. This is the second book of this series and as usual, Ms. Stoker does an admiral job of taking the reader on a ride. My emotions were all over the place here. I admired Chloe's spirit, strength and determination to get away from the situation that her brother put her in. Ronan or Ro was wonderful. I loved him in Defending Allye and his character just got better and better in his own story.This book has a dual POV that helps me as a reader to understand the character so much better. As not ever been in this situation and not knowing how I would react, this is necessary to understand the character's actions instead of guess the why and why not.This story flows beautifully. The scenes play out like a movie. I was so engrossed in the action right from the beginning. It was impossible to put the book down. My e-reader was on fire this this one. As a devoted fan of this author, I'm awed by her ability to transport me into the story so fully.I highly recommend this story to anyone.

Dark, dangerous, intense, exciting and full of hot sexy times…what more could you want in a good story? Wow, this book was awesome! Defending Chloe is the second book in the Mountain Mercenaries series and is just as good as the first. There is plenty of action, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and romance to hold your interest as well as some fun times, good laughs, and sexy tough as nails alpha men to make this book an excellent read. The characters are amazing and the storyline engaging. It will pull you in from the first pages and immerse you into the seedy world of murder, mafia, sex trafficking and more. Rowan and Chloe are great characters and their story is both tragic and endearing. They are strong individually and make a great team. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve over the course of the story. It was well paced and flowed nicely. I also like the fact that the characters Stoker writes are down to earth, easy to relate to and flawed in a way that brings a more natural feel to the overall read. I absolutely loved this book. Book 2 in Susan Stokes Mountain Mercenaries series delivered everything that I had hoped for. This series is so different than her others series but is no less gripping or moving. Susan Stokes is pure genius and is definitely my favourite author. I recommend this book to all romance readers who like their hero's on the alpha side.

I loved Ro and Chloe’s story. Chloe was put in a situation no woman should ever be in, especially at the hands of a family member. Susan Stoker does an excellent job of handling delicate subjects with care. There may be those who have been forced into the sex trade who should carefully decide if they want to read this book, however, it is first and foremost a romance novel, without a lot of details, and so well written! I look forward to reading Arrow and Morgan’s story next!
