This is a good read for pastors...

The book was mostly theory and seemed to pontificate versus provide guidance.

Dr. Craddock is one that will go down in ministerial folklore. Many have come from under his tutelage but he will never be matched and One Without Authority is an example of his expertise.

A good book by an authority on preaching - despite the title!

A classic!

Craddock's work remains a popular volume on preaching in many evangelical circles. One understands his desire to minister to the present generation with the Word of God by evaluating the current condition of American pulpits. Fewer and fewer attend church with each passing generation, and Craddock is right to look primarily at those who are responsible for shepherding the flocks.While Craddock nobly seeks to make the sermons more understandable to the modern culture, he goes too far in looking first to the culture to determine the content of the sermon itself. He notes of a "current sag in the pulpit [which] is the loss of certainty and the increase of tentativeness on the part of the preacher" (11). With the culture shying away from any perceived authoritative figure, preachers tend to compensate so as not to offend. This reliance on the congregation's perception of the sermon is overstated.Rather, Craddock believes the key to contemporary preaching is for sermons to cease being exclusively one-sided. He believes the congregation should have some part in the preaching process. While preaching in some degree is a community experience, boundaries do exist --- yet Craddock seeks to move the boundary markers more toward the congregation and away from exclusively the preacher. "Without question, preaching increases in power when it is dialogical, when speaker and listener share in the proclamation of the Word" (18). "Without question"?Secondly, the preacher will find value in certain aspects of Craddock's model of inductive preaching. Rather than starting with a particular truth and moving to particular applications (deduction), Craddock believes that starting with the listeners' experiences and moving them to the biblical propositions would reach more people, especially those in Western culture. He notes:"Anyone who preaches deductively from an authoritative stance probably finds that shared experiences in the course of service as pastor, counselor, teacher, and friend tend to erode the image of authority. Such preachers want protecting distance, not over exposure. However, these common experiences, provided they are meaningful in nature and are reflected on with insight and judgment, are for the inductive method essential to the preaching experience" (49).Yet, Craddock implies that a preacher cannot be transparent in relating to his parishioners' experiences, yet still relay propositional truth. The preacher is not the ultimate authority, but what authority he has is found in the God-given Scriptures from whom that authority derives.He conveys that the listener is the ultimate arbiter of whether a sermon is of value or not. This mindset is troublesome. For instance, in the same chapter as the quote from above, he gives a reason for stressing inductive preaching: "If it is done well, one often need not make the applications of the conclusion to the lives of the hearers. If they have made the trip, it is their conclusion, and the implication for their own situations is not only clear but personally inescapable" (48-49). While he rightly presents the fact that the ultimate responsibility for one's Christian walk lies not with the minister but with the listener, his rationale falls apart. He understands how Western/American culture has difficulty in thinking in a Christian worldview in which propositional truths are processed (implying they need help in this area), he then questions why a minister would want to come along and concretely and objectively help them in properly applying the Word to their lives.Though Western culture is most certainly image-driven rather than word-driven, this trend is not necessarily a good trend that preachers should feed. Craddock would do well to remember the doctrine of fallen humanity. The very members of his audience look through the lenses of their own depravity. The experiences and images are quite subjective, and therefore tinged by sin and self. Deductive preaching that begins with the clear, objective propositional truths of Scripture that serve as anchors in the midst of the minds of cultural subjectivity.Many pastors would take offense to a particular statement that truly sums up Craddock's not-so-veiled attempt to decry the deductive method of preaching, he propounds that preachers lack academic respectability because of their use of this method in the modern and postmodern age. While he does not advocate a speech teacher to teach preaching in seminaries, he continues:"And, of course, when preaching is taught by a pastor, retired or active, the course suffers, deservedly or not, from that particular brand of harsh laughter reserved by students and faculty for that which lacks academic respectability. As a natural consequence, preaching continues for another generation as 'a marginal annoyance on the record of a scientific age'" (5).The general nature in which Craddock refers to the majority of preachers does not help his credibility in addressing the so-called ills of deductive preaching. While his concerns may have some legitimacy, to paint such a broad brush stroke over pulpits and seminaries alike is irresponsible. The "thin diet of fond memories" (4) in which he accuses the church of living in perpetuating this method of preaching may well continue for a reason.Craddock's propensity to direct intentionally the book toward the female minister is particularly disturbing. One could forgive this indiscretion if he provided more balance --- yet he exclusively refers to the ministers that he describes with the feminine gender. Given how this book seeks to reach the broadest base of ministers and lay leaders possible, Craddock conveys an agenda which seems more reactionary to conservative evangelicalism which clearly (and biblically) holds to male spiritual leaders in favor of a more liberal mindset in addressing and acknowledging only female ministers. While many in various evangelical circles laud this book (even desiring a second edition), he loses a major marketing base by such a transparent and disappointing agenda that distracts from the message he wishes to convey.ConclusionRegardless of the reception of this book both at the time of its original publication and now, I could not recommend this book to fellow preachers. If I did, I would only recommend this book to show the problematic nature of listener-oriented, exclusively inductive preaching.For a more balanced work, I would recommend Preaching with Bold Assurance by Hershael York and Bert Decker. This work seeks to help the preacher with engaging exposition which seeks not only to touch the listeners' minds but also to touch their hearts as well. Craddock laments that not enough preaching is relevant for audiences, but blames deductive preaching. Deductive preaching need not be irrelevant preaching. York's book clearly demonstrates this.

Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge doing a PhD in eighteenth-century literature before moving to London, Ontario, where she lives with her partner and their two children. The Wonder by Emma Donoghue is a masterfully written mystery, and the detective is a young English nurse who has been hired to come in as an outside observer to determine the validity of the claim of a rural Irish family that their eleven year old daughter has taken no food for four months, and yet, is miraculously thriving. This nurse, Lib, expresses well the prejudices of the English towards the Irish and their beliefs. (The novel takes place not long after the end of the Great Potato Famine, and so there are intense feelings between the two cultures.) The focus of the story is on a young girl, Anna, who is seen locally as being specially blessed by God, and yet, as the story unfolds we come to see that she represents a perfect storm of pressures arising from devotion to God and religious fanaticism, love of family and family dysfunction. Lib, as a well-trained nurse, arrives with total skepticism, assuming that the child herself is perpetuating this hoax, but Anna's simplicity and purity of heart gradually win Lib over. The challenge then becomes: How to keep this child alive? As with all good mysteries, just about every character has ulterior motives of one kind or another to want the phenomena to be real... the priest, the doctor, the innkeeper, the parents. It is only the trust that slowly builds between Lib and Anna that creates a ray of hope. So much happens towards the end of the book that I was transfixed. The book gave me much to ponder about how children are influenced, for good or ill, by those around them. After finishing it, I immediately went back to read the last three chapters again so I could better appreciate all that contributed to Anna's dire situation. I happen to be a child psychologist, so these issue matter to me, but I think Donoghue's novel will have wide appeal. This is a very worthwhile read.

This book is a delight to read on so many levels. The story is compelling and interesting and the writing is very good. In addition to containing a disturbing mystery, the novel poses questions about medical ethics and morality. A good book makes you think and I am still thinking about this one a few days after finishing.The story is set in southern Ireland in 1859, over the period of two weeks. Lib is a widow who became a nurse after her husband of one year died. She was a Nightingale, as in trained by Florence, and was working in a hospital in England after the Crimea War. Her matron suggested Lib travel to Ireland to be a nurse in the O’Donnell household for two weeks. She agrees, but nothing is as she anticipated. Lib has been hired by a committee of townsfolk to “observe” 11 year old Anna O’Donnell for two weeks. The child has not eaten in 4 months and the committee wants to know if this is a hoax or divine intervention as the family claims. The child reports that she receives manna from heaven. People come from all over to see the devoutly religious miracle child. Lib and a local nun are to take shifts and simply observe to see if the child is taking in any food. Lib is out of place in Catholic Ireland and is convinced that the whole thing is a trick. She is a firm believer in facts and science and has nothing but disdain for religion. As she spends time with Anna, an unlikely friendship develops. Lib remains very skeptical of the family and some of the townspeople. She is befriended by a newspaper reporter sent there to cover the story. Together, they begin to discover the horrible truth. As Anna’s health begins to fail, Lib begs the local physician and the committee to end the watch period and intervene. She soon discovers that everyone has their own agenda, including building up the local church if Anna is declared a saint. Lib knows that she needs to act fast, but she is torn between duty and love.There are so many lovely layers to this novel. The characters have hidden secrets, some of them quite horrifying. It is chilling to learn how far people will go to further their own desires. Far enough to endanger the life of a child and to convince her that she is doing the right thing by starving herself. There are themes of guilt, family loyalty, the goodness and dangers of religion, misperceptions and assumptions, and medical and moral ethics. The story is a slow burn that builds to some startling conclusions. The book is hard to put down and well worth your time.

Words can't to do this story justice. Personally, I do not enjoy nineteenth century writing. Nor do I find reading Irish, British or other forms of European English dialects; only because the vocabulary is difficult for me which causes me to stutter in my reading. However....this book had me hooked and I was able to overcome my shortcomings. The revelations were so intriguing and surprising! You have to read this beautiful written book!

I bought a bunch of bottles of the biggest Nutellas I found in amazon and I use it for Christmas gift basket along with this Nutella book, the Nutella spatula and cookies. Everyone loves it!

If you're looking for recipes on the rich side, this is your book. The recipes aren't super simple, take some time to prepare and use a variety of ingredients you may not have around your house. If you're looking for "quick recipes" this may not be your best bet, but the couple recipes that I tried (truffles!) were exquisite.

I got this book for a friend of mine who's from Italy and who loves Nutella (he makes amazing Nutelka crepes). He was genuinely impressed by the recipes in this little book, and can't wait to try them. I can't wait to be around when he does :)

My wife really likes Nutella ( a healthy part of a balanced meal) so I got this as a random gift. The recipes are actually real recipes and not feel like the Nutella was forced into a recipe just to make it a Nutella recipe.

Who doesn't love Nutella, right? The book was intersting, but none of the receipes really impressed me or were that creative. Most you could've already assumed you could use nutella on. Would've liked to have more non-traditionl nutella items. Great novelty item.

Most of the recipes are too complex to do for casually fun baking. Only a couple suitable to do with children. I'm sure most of them are wonderful, we just won't ever attempt them.

I gave this as a gift to a young lady who loves Nutella. She was thrilled and couldn't wait try the recipes. The book is darling and is cut in the shape you see. It is slightly padded and opens from the "lid" end. Pictures throughout. I recommend it as a fun little gift.

Can be done by my 11 year old who is extremely happy with this book and loves Nutella. But who doesn't?

Now that I have kids, I've found my forays back into the world of children's literature disappointing. I can only assume the publishing business has become so efficient at branding and marketing, that it seems like anything that doesn't conform to a carefully categorized set of shiny, cheerful production values is marginalized into oblivion. I keep wondering, where is the mystery that I remember from when I was a kid? Where the sense of possibility? The feeling that there was more to the world than met the eyes? So much of what's available seems so . . . obvious.This book was a wonderful discovery. It's the product of an inspired collaboration between a wonderful storyteller and an imaginative printmaker. The storyteller remembers first hand those great old tales that I dimly recall from when I was a kid, and manages to keep them true to what made them so fascinating while helping to explain them to a new generation. Great playfully handled stuff about how there are forces out there in the world that defy our sense of order and reason, but that how even something as ur-awful as a troll can easily be managed by the littlest child, if he only stops to use his brains! And stories that have been repeated too often like the Three Billy Goats Gruff come compellingly back to life. The illustrations are at least as strong as the story. They break away from the greeting card/funnypaper/cuteness school of artistic design, in favor of woodcuts that manage to be richly colored and engaging, but also to introduce a degree of subtelty and abstraction that leave room for a sense of mystery and possibility that is so lacking in so many children's books.This book gets my highest recommendation. (Certainly every child of Scandinavian heritage should have a copy in his or her library!) I only wish I could find more books like this . . .

I was so happy to find these wonderful troll stories told the way I remember them! My mother (who grew up in northern Minnesota) told us kids these stories when we were very small (that's a long time ago). Lately I thought the tradition was lost because I could only find watered-down versions of the the Three Billy Goats Gruff, not the fascinating and powerful tales I remembered. But all is not lost. Here is a collection of genuine Troll stories, with ugly, scary trolls in all shapes and sizes, and clever boys and girls who persevere through wild and strange adventures and eventually save the day. Great stories, wonderfully told. The illustrations are beautiful.I first borrowed this book from the library, but of course had to then buy a copy of my own. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought it to read to my four-year-old and the book well exceeded my expectations.Here you will find classics such as the Three Billy Goats Gruff and tales you may never have heard of. They are all beautifully put together and could be told as a traditional story teller might or read aloud for maximum impact.Great stories well told, and a treasure trove for children and folklorists alike.

This book is a delight and a must have if you are obsessed with trolls or have a fetish for anything Scandanavian. Very cool, very quirky.

I love children's books and I love sharing them with children. I have high standards... I like good writing. I expect illustrations that truly add something to the quality of the storytelling and which are truly artistic. Usually one or the other, and often both, is lacking.Lise Lunge-Larsen brought my Scandinavian heritage forward in a respectful way when she retold these tales, and Betsy Bowen's well known woodcuts did everything art can do to encourage the telling of a tale. The art actually has a nostalgic feel that lends to how old troll tales are and seemed to have been dug out of the past with them.I had begun reading about trolls to my son with D'Aulaires' Book of Trolls (New York Review Children's Collection), and while I love the d'Aulaires artistry and it's a well written book, it was as much the history of trolls as it was stories. My son sat through it, but he didn't beg for me to read like he did with this one. Lunge-Larsen takes the opposite approach with a little bit of Troll lore followed by mostly story. Having already read d'Aulaire aloud and taking my son's age into consideration, I read the commentary to myself this time and only read him the stories. He has continued to come back to this book to hear favorite stories again (which is good -- memory has its development in the early years and hearing stories repeated is beneficial) and asked for felt board characters to go along with the books and to aid him in narrating the stories from memory both for my benefit and when he is on his own.

Lise Lunge-Larsen grew up with troll stories in Norway and has been sharing them with American children since her coming to this country. For a parent to read, or a storyteller to tell, this collection is rich and valuable. Children need stories as vehicles for understanding. They reveal universal turths. They speak to our inner circumstances, they make us human. Some of the basic lessons that are repeated and surface include: -be true to your nature -remember who you are -Life is a journey and only you can take yours -Use your gifts -Don't ever give up -Everything you need can be found inside yourself While learning these stories, children can rest in a world that is full of magic, but mirrors their own. A world that has the possibility of greatness that lies within each human heart. I bought this book to add to my collection of stories to tell again and again to children to remind them of their own capacity to overcome challenging situations in thier lives. I could not be more pleased!

I didn't realize when I bought this book that in addition to the dozen plus essays, there are several short stories. I don't think of short stories as Neal Stephenson territory, so I was pleased to get them. They turn out to be pretty good stories, too, quite enjoyable and for once not overly long.The heart of this collection, though, is the essays, which range from a couple of pages long to over a hundred pages, novella-length in its own right. Stephenson covers many subjects here, from introducing other writer's works to metaphysics at the Royal Society, to describing the laying of trans-oceanic telecommunications cable to discussing the state of science fiction today. As one would expect from Stephenson, he writes intelligently and with humor about all these subjects and many more. I never would have thought that an essay on laying telecom cable would be interesting, but I was sucked into this article and read it in a single sitting, over a hundred pages of it.I really liked the fact that these pieces covered such a broad range of subjects and were of such varied lengths. I didn't know Stephenson could write anything under 300 pages long, so the shorter pieces were a pleasant surprise. Sometimes I wished he would expound more on the shorter bits, such as his discussion of "Anathem", and the interviews with Slashdot and Salon were also pretty interesting and easily could have been longer.Overall, this is a thoughtful collection that should please and reward you with chuckles and the occasional, "Huh, I didn't know that." I was particularly interested in Stephenson's take on the state of science fiction today, which he brings up in several of these pieces. I wanted to hear him talk more about his own books, though, which doesn't much occur herein, and I could have used a couple more short stories. This book is a strong work that doesn't disappoint, and it should give you a dozen hours of reading enjoyment.

This book is a view into the mind and discipline of a once in a century, or longer, author. The stories in this case are just so so but the manner of crafting stories, building character, asking intelligent questions is among the best, if not the best ever. If you have not read the system of the World Series, Cryptonomicon, Reamde, or others where he describes characters and roles you have missed the best historical fiction in many lifetimes. Each character is warts and all, and by the end of each book, you are avidly looking for the next, and the quality just keeps improving. The only complaint I have is that I wish I had found this author many years before. A great read but only if you are ready to be made to think.

It's fascinating to read Neal Stephanson's nonfiction. Having read a good deal of his fiction--and enjoyed the complete worlds that he creates--it's a treat to read his take on the "real" world. Elements of humor, wisdom learned along the way, and even some of his political and social views become evident in this work. Readers who enjoy his fictional works may be surprised by this side of the author but won't be disappointed.

A necessary addition to any Stephenson fan's library. The epic essay, "Mother Earth, Mother Board", is worth the price of admission alone.

Stephenson is a kind of polymath, and this collection shows it. All is interesting, and you can see some stuff that wound up in his novels. Very interesting, especially if you're a fan.

I first became a fan of Neal Stephenson's writing when I discovered his brilliant fiction: "Cryptonomicon," "Reamde" and his Baroque Cycle novels. I was delighted to learn that he had pulled together a collection of previous published essays and other non-fiction pieces in "Some Remarks."Mr. Stephenson is the rare writer who combines deep technical domain knowledge with a literary style that is both erudite and refreshing. Understanding and enjoying his level of communication takes a bit of work, but it is well worth it - like savoring a delicious steak that requires some savory chewing. In this far-ranging collection, the author tackles The Internet, Metaphysics and the battle between Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, scientists as modern Jedi knights, a deconstruction of the movies Star Wars and 300 - and a whole lot more.I always get to the last page of a Stephenson book, and then jump on Amazon to order something else by him to read.

This book is a good mix of (mostly short-form) writings: from a little bit unexpected (like introductory piece about perils of sedentary lifestyle) to proper "Neal's style" things. By "Neal's style" I mean "extremely rich in details, festooned with brilliant and simply explanations of difficult things/ideas and really thought provoking". I especially liked "Mother Board Mother Earth" (fascinating introduction to the world of submarine cabling which provides foundations for our modern communication systems) and rocket-science/big project execution related pieces "Locked In" & "Innovation Starvation". And if you are fan of Baroque Cycle there are some related interviews in this book too.

I've read several of Stephenson's books with great enjoyment. I now add this collection of essays to the list.He's obviously very smart and well informed as well as a creative thinker.Unlike his books which tend to be wordy, the essays are concise and to the point.

Purchased for one of my Son's who will be getting Married in October of this year.While I have noticed there are so many books for the Bride to be there's just not enough for the groom.It's a pretty basic book with information we already know.Some is useless while other info is helpful. He did get some good info out of this but he says he pretty much knew most of what was said in this book.

My fiancé and I have agreed that a typical bachelor party would be cheating and we are going against it. This book had multiple pages about a bachelor party with boxes to select options such as porn and what fetish you’d like also were innapropriate drawing of strippers. This book also “recommended” you don’t not have a typical night with your friends for your bachelor party which my finance felt was encouraging people to cheat

My fiance kept asking how he could better help me plan our wedding, and I was having a hard time figuring out things I could have him help with. I can barely figure out what I'm supposed to handle! In any event, this book has been very helpful for him to keep track of whats going on, and even gives him the direction he needs so he can make very helpful suggestions and offer great opinions. The whole first section is on the engagement, which was already over by the time we needed the book. But overall its a fun book for my future hubby to keep track and help out with the planning of our wedding, and he actually uses it!

I purchased two of these and two of the companion book "The Bride's Instruction Manual"; one set was for me and my fiance, and the other set was a gift for my newly engaged friends. I bought them just for the silliness, but once I got flipping through it I was surprised by how good the advice actually is. I would highly recommend both this one and "The Bride's Instruction Manual" for offering good advice with a heavy dose of humor. I mean, what couple stressing over a wedding couldn't use a little laughter to lighten it up?

I love these books! I bought both the bride's version and the groom's version for us to use. We're planning our own wedding for later this year and these books are great resources. I love that it isn't printed in all black and white... there are colorful graphics and use of color throughout to help keep your attention. Handy resource!

Excellent little book!Was purchased as a gift for an engagement party.The groom loved it....lots of great tips along with many humorous ones.If you are looking for a little something this is a perfect gift.

Buying stuff for a newly engaged female is easy. I found this gift for my friend's fiance and I'm obsessed with it. Brings a lot of humor to a stressful time in a couple's life. I would highly recommend this. Cute and easy gift. Didn't have change to read much of the material but what I did read was brilliant.

I had originally seen this book at a small gift shop in Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston and I stayed in the store reading it long enough to get all sorts of nasty looks from the girl at the counter. Rather than pay the jacked-up tourist trap price to buy the book I came to Amazon and saved almost 75%.This book is a quick read and despite some hokey graphics and charts it does provide valuable information on all topics from selecting a ring to asking her father's permission to wedding night sex. This was especially helpful for me as I had not been to a wedding rehearsal prior to my own wedding and I was the first of my friends to get engaged so I didn't have any expectations/knowledge of what to expect.Buy this book for yourself and get the bride instruction manual for your wife and then read them both to gain valulable knowledge and also to earn some brownie points for when she eventually yells at you for not caring enough about the font color on the placecards.

This was WAY more informative, in depth, and awesome than I thought it was going to be. I really does contain ACTUAL advice and usable information. I thought it was just going to be some neat but fun light hearted suggestions, but there is a TON of information in it. Gave it to my future brother in law for their bridal shower. Huge hit!
