At first I thought the book was a little too tacky and forced kind of like a lifetime made for tv movie. A guy always wanted to be something since he was a boy, had early childhood tragedy, eventually married, became successful, and had the perfect family (1 boy, 1 girl, and a caring wife who was a homemaker), and everything he could want (materially), but has an intervention and realizes he's forgotten what is important in life.However, once you meet the inspiring characters and read their messages the book does get much better. Many good takeaways. I highly recommend to those who are just starting out their career and need motivation or those lacking direction.

There are 1000 better titles on the subject of success This book is filled with boring stories and very little information.

I've read Ben Newman's other books and can say that he has really come into his own with this book. Marrying a fable with these modern day motivating lessons is the inspirational sweet spot he's been after! Ben's real life success and all the pitfalls and stresses that can come with a young man hitting the pinnacle of his career lent real nuggets of truth in how easily diverted we can become from what truly matters. It's an entertaining, easy-read, yet proundly meaningful in how to improve and enjoy all areas of your life.

So this is a first: I do not remember requesting an ARC of this book. I suspect the wishbone button is at play here but, since NetGalley doesn’t have a way of tracking wishes, who knows? It was a stressful summer and fall, and I may have done all sorts of crazy things on the internet that I don’t remember.Which is my roundabout way of saying that, despite the abundance of katanas and severed heads, SAMURAI RISING isn’t the sort of book I normally gravitate to. I don’t read a ton of middle grade, and military history mostly bores me to tears. (I’d call SAMURAI RISING equal parts biography and military history/strategy. But since Yoshitsune is mostly known for his inspired military leadership, that tips the scales more heavily toward the latter.) Though I did skim some of the more strategy-heavy battle scenes (the lack of maps in the ARC made them even more difficult for me to envision), overall I was pleasantly surprised: SAMURAI RISING is a rather engaging read.Rife with political intrigue, shifting loyalties, and back-stabbing, SAMURAI RISING often reads like a centuries-old soap opera. Danger comes not just from rival samurai bloodlines (such as the warring Minamoto and Taira clans that take center stage here), but from within one’s own family as well: nephews are hired to assassinate their uncles, brothers betray brothers, and parents may murder their own children to (re)claim power. Ironically, among Yoshitsune’s small band of closest friends, there was not a single Minamoto to be found; and, despite all he did to help his half-brother Yoritomo ascend to power, Yoshitsune was cast aside – similar to how the Emperor treated their father decades before.Yoshitsune’s is the ultimate underdog story. After his father’s defeat, then-baby Yoshitsune’s life was spared, but on the condition that he be raised as a monk, far away from the politics of Kyoto. Consequently, he didn’t begin his samurai training until he was fifteen, when he fled his impending religious vows and the life of tedium and anonymity they promised. By comparison, most samurai were finishing up a decade’s worth of training at this age and would be considered war-ready, or nearly so. Likewise, as a member of the opposition force, Yoshitsune often fought with smaller armies and in disadvantageous conditions – such as the famed cliffside attack on the Taira fortress at Ichi-no-Tani. Yet he always managed to rally his men to victory.(Until he didn’t. If you’re already familiar with Japanese history, you probably know how Yoshitsune’s story ends. I’m not, and it came as a huge surprise. Nearly 40% of this book is comprised of back matter, a fact not immediately obvious in the ARC owing to the lack of a TOC. Thus I didn’t realize I’d reached the end until the last page. To say that I didn’t see it coming is an understatement.)Even so, it’s disconcerting to see Yoshitsune positioned as the unequivocal hero. In their quest for power and riches, the samurai and monarchy consistently trample on those belonging to lower social classes. As they rampaged across the countryside, samurai ransacked homes, stole food and livestock to feed their armies, and kidnapped peasants to serve them – all while demanding taxes to fund a lifestyle at turns lavish and bloodthirsty. Turner reports that Yoshitsune was a little more humane than most, yet this didn’t stop him from setting fire to trees, fields – and even the homes of commoners – in order to light a midnight attack on the Taira:“For a warrior Yoshitsune was unusually civilized in his dealings with common people. He made sure that his warriors behaved well in Kyoto – no thievery or bullying happened on his watch. Yet he remained a samurai. Samurai didn’t see themselves as protectors of the common people; a peasant had no more “rights” than an ox. So the fires were lit.”Meticulously researched, Turner bases much of her narrative on two sources: THE TALE OF THE HEIKE, as translated by Helen McCullough and Royall Tyler, and the AZUMA KAGAMI (MIRROR OF EASTERN JAPAN). Yoshitsune “is clearly one of the HEIKIE’S heroes,” which could also explain the bias. That, and no one wants to root for Goliath.Given the age and general sketchiness of the original texts, it’s no surprise that Turner’s retelling sometimes lacks depth and emotion; centuries dead and buried, their voices gone with them, Turner is often left to speculate about her subjects’ motivations, feelings, and innermost desires. What we’re left with is the who, what, when, and where, but the whys are a little harder to come by.In this vein, women are predictably absent from the story – save for Yoshitsune’s lover Shizuka, who’s an all-around bad-ass. (Turner describes her as the bravest character in the whole darn book, and I’d be hard-pressed to disagree.) In her copious Author’s Notes, Turner includes a section on the status of women, which I appreciate; but I would’ve liked to have learned even more about Yoritomo’s widow, Hōjō Masako, who had her own son Yoriie strangled in order to prevent him allying with political factions she opposed. As Turner so wryly points out:“Minamoto rule of Japan ended on this fratricidal note. In Yoritomo had left a strong and loyal brother alive to protect his heirs, would history have turned out differently? [...]“The Hōjō family was – wait for it! – a minor branch of the Taira.”Still, SAMURAI RISING is an excellent choice for kids who aren’t too keen on history – but might be swayed with a little action and bloodshed.** Full disclosure: I received a free electronic ARC for review through NetGalley. **

You can tell by how big the glossary, foreword, and author's notes are that the facts about Yoshitsune's life was well researched and yet this is a very harsh read. The author's can't quite come to terms to how to write about the Samurai's life, it's a bit biographical, there is some novelization but it's not quite either. This reads like a dinner conversation about Yoshitsune's life, the prose is very basic and sentences are often written as how a person might speak, I recall one sentence even has a "-wait for it!-" in the middle of a statement. It feels contrived and dumbed down, instead of writing "we can imagine during this time that the samurai might have..." just go ahead and write a historical novel, lots of authors manage to make great novels out of historical facts and a bit of imagination. This book however falls short of writing an objective biography or a great historical novel. I felt like I was being lectured about Yoshitsune's life by a kindergarten teacher.

Highly suggest this for a light quick action packed read. Well written, author has a light sense of humor that keeps the story from getting too heavy

Normally reading books is a chore for me. But this book was different, I couldn't put this book down. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of Japanese history and reading about the Samurai.

I am not at all into murder and mayhem, but I loved the book and could not put it down. I should confess that I purchased the book because the artist is a friend and also because another friend is writing a book connected to 19th century Samurai. I was thoroughly delighted with this book and have shared scans of the cover with several other friends.

Little boy I purchased this for (my nephew) love it! He said it was the best Christmas gift ever.

I just wish it was 300 pages longer. appreciated the endnotes. gotta love good endnotes.

I purchased this for a birthday gift for my four year old granddaughter. My daughter sends me pictures all the time of the wonderful things they have made from this book. They love it.....especially my granddaughter. The instructions are easy and she can do most things by herself!

Recipes are simple. My granddaughter is 6 yrs old and love love loved it. She was so excited to have her own cook book. Lots of pictures keeps a young child interested and ease of learning the recipes. I would recommend this for children between the ages of 6-10.

A great way for mommy and little one to start cooking together

This a very simple cute book we like baking from this book with my 5 yayt old. But some of the recipes don't taste very good.

It was a gift for daughter & , granddaughter they seemed quite delighted.

Really cute book. It has gotten my 8yr old more interested in trying new things bc she gets to make them. More of the recipes are sweets but it's a nice starting place!

I purchased this for my granddaughter and her mom, who loves to bake.I think it will be great for them to work on projects together.

I have one of these posters which cost twice as much as the entire book of them and I think this is a lovely book and a lovely gift item for any woman on your list, young or old. Must love color!!!

Several years ago, I was in a Mardi Gras-themed restaurant and I fell in love with the wall posters plastered all over the walls. In my attempt to hunt down one of the posters, I discovered Andrea Mistretta. I can't even remember the poster I had originally been looking for, I was so smitten!I love Andrea Mistretta's art. Her Mardi Gras posters are beyond beautiful. Even though I have no ties to New Orleans and have never attended Mardi Gras, Ms. Mistretta's vibrant, detailed posters appeal to me on many levels and make me want to visit NOW!

Mistretta does an amazing job of capturing the spirit, excitement and color of the annual Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. Each poster from the Mardi Gras series depicted in this book features an array of Mardi Gras symbolism incorporated into the poster's design. This book provides a wonderful way to experience the vibrant color of the annual Mardi Gras celebration without every leaving your easy chair. Also included is a chapter in which the artist/author demonstrates the painstaking technique she uses to create each of Mardi Gras posters, enabling the reader to appreciate them even more. This is an art book to cherish and enjoy again and again, year after year.

Vibrant, dazzling, impressive . . . anyone who even looks at the cover of this book will be instantly wowed by what they see and even more so when they open the covers. Andrea Mistretta, like many artists, had a wealth of talent, but her pocketbook was rather bare. She knew the poster market in New Orleans was growing and perhaps someone might be interested in her painting, "Mercredi des Cendres." It had been a labor of love and she "penciled, painted, airbrushed, mixing techniques" and added special touches to her heart's content. The surreal product was one that captured the essence of the Mardi Gras, but a young struggling illustrator "a thousand miles away" from the enchanting art world of New Orleans had little chance of succeeding.Andrea sent a Polaroid with her friend, Karen. Perhaps she could sell the painting for her, but instead received an unexpected call from Miss Margarita Bergen, proprietress of Bergen Galleries. "Dahling, I would like to do a Mardi Gras poster with you." This unexpected turn of events would bring her fame and, au contraire, the magic of her artwork would bring New Orleans alive on her posters. I've seldom seen a book with such liberal use of color. Each and every one of them could be easily framed and hung on a wall. Andrea briefly discusses the history behind each poster. The name of the poster, the technique, size and date are included. We get a glimpse in some of these of Andrea herself and her affinity with New Orleans and her life in general. I especially enjoyed reading about her poster "Band of Angels," and the comment she made that "it was truly celestial beings that led me and allowed my spirit to ascend beyond this poster with a very special project." And I am delighted to say that the story inside is just as stunning!What do you do when you're a romance author who doesn't believe in romance anymore? Well, that is the situation that Brie finds herself in after she is dumped by her celebrity boyfriend. Needing to write another bestseller Brie just cannot find the spark that always came so easily to her before but it's not surprising considering all of the online abuse and media intrusion that she has experienced. But after her loved ones give her a stern talking to, Brie knows that she needs to do something to get herself out of this funk that she has fallen into and soon she has more than one book idea brewing. When the opportunity to teach in Italy presents itself, Brie jumps at it with both hands as who wouldn't be inspired by the beauty and culture of the Lakes and when she meets Arran Jamieson, romance may just jump off the page and into her life ...The setting is stunning in SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES and Lucy Coleman has a real talent for painting the soul of a place and making you desperate to visit there yourself. Brianna Middleton is a successful writer but struggling to find her mojo to finish her current work-in-progress. She's also single and lacking confidence after her previous relationship severely dented her confidence. When her agent asks her to stand in for another writer on a four-week assignment in Italy to assist on a writing retreat, she's sceptical but accepts the challenge. Her first impressions of her host are strained, but with a stunning backdrop against Lake Garda, the trip not only triggers her creativity but opens her mind and heart to find love.Although the main focus is on Brie and Arran, I devoured all the information surrounding the writing retreat classes. If you, like me have sat down to write, you'll love all the details about the writing process the author poured into this part of the narrative. It's unexpected, yet played a huge part in my overall enjoyment along with the antics of the protagonists and their guests.I enjoyed how Brie took stock of her life and let go of her inhibitions to explore the opportunities presented to her, including Arran. As the hero, I always appreciate getting to know ones perceived as difficult, until we learn more about them. It's exciting when the attraction becomes more than a furtive glance and a slight touch. Complimenting the tentative relationship is the stunning Italian Lakes backdrop and the tantalising descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of the area.Around the 75-80% mark, the narrative dragged on and ran out of steam. Until this point, I adored the time the protagonists were in Italy and remained invested in them after the plot shifted back to the UK. However, the additional plot-lines concentrating on secondary characters took away the focus from Brie and Arran in what I can only think is a way of building interest for a future novel? If this is the case, it didn't work for me as I didn't connect sufficiently to those characters and it cast a shadow over what had been until that point a fabulous read.Overall, many high points make this a lovely, fascinating romance; two very different authors finding a common ground between them, the inclusion of the writing retreat class information and lastly, Lake Garda's beauty and culture.
