My son loves the periodic table song and so I got him this book so he can learn more about the elements. He read it in a day but he has read it over and over. It was great how excited he became when he read something new and fascinating. This is a great, fun book!

My 10year old did not put it down after he received it for Christmas. The pages are colorful with just the right amount of text. This book shows up at least once a month for a re-skim!

This Periodic Table book appears to be targeted at young children. It has bright and cheerful pictures and advertises it is 'wacky'. Unfortunately it was not age appropriate (for any child). It contains dark and unnecessary subject matter.There is nothing 'amazing and wacky" about this book.The nonchalant reference to the loss of human lives is morbid. This book talks A LOT about murder, assassination, death, war, disease, and witches. It is not fun and cheerful as the pictures and bright colors suggest.I am appalled that the author and publisher thinks this is written for a child.Towards the end of the book it looks as if the author got bored and threw numerous elements on one page with a short sentence for each. Some information was completely false, such as the dinosaurs and how they became extinct.Science can be an enjoyable subject for children and it would be great to have resources to expose young minds to the fascinating parts without exposing them to darker parts of life and humanity.The author has failed to write toward the innocent young audience this book was intended for.

Reading this with and 8 year-old who loves it! We haven't gotten through all of it yet. It is a lot of information, but fun and a good introduction to the periodic table. I think we might skip over some of the elements (there is detailed information about every single one!) but it will be a good resource. It is fun and readable with interesting pictures and information along the way.

Read this book cover to cover and if you're not thoroughly scared to death there is something wrong with you. Barry Groves has officially written the Bible on health. Trick and Treat should be required reading by everyone who eats. Absolutely brilliant! The chapter on polyunsaturated fats has made a huge impact in our home. If you are not convinced by the last page that you should be eating anything but meat, eggs, cheese and butter, then stick with the carbs and see what health issues will happen. Buy and it spread the low carb gospel.

I found this book fascinating. For many years, I suspected a lot of misinformation--whether deliberate or by ignorance--was being handed out to people. I researched out the information for myself and read most of the other articles that Mr. Groves referenced. That said, I've found his information to be spot on.So, how has this information benefited me? I have had excellent results with following his suggested dietary intake. In a matter of a little over 5 weeks, I have gone from barely able to walk because of incessant joint pains and myalgias. I huffed and puffed my way through life. I was unable to breathe without extreme chest tightness and heart palpitations and feeling as if I was going to keel over at any moment. My skin was so very dry that it felt prickly and itched incessantly so much so that I had to take antihistamines all the time and slather myself with expensive lotions. My lower legs and feet were perpetually swollen so much so that I had great fears that I would lose my feet to amputations. They were swollen, red, and it was very difficult to walk and felt as if the skin would split if I stood on my feet. At times, the toes on both feet would be a ghastly bluish-black color and ice cold. I thought I was dying from the toes upward. Geezum, it felt as if I had severe arthritis in the arches of my feet. I was literally housebound. Going out into the sun brought severe pain when the sunlight shone on the skin, and by golly, I'd break out in hives. My life, or lack thereof, was miserable. I contemplated the ultimate solution regularly. I longed for death to bring me some peace.It has now been a little over 5 weeks since I've drastically changed my eating habits. I no longer follow the prescribed "healthy diet." I've lost a little over 24 pounds without even trying. My energy has come back, and the sun no longer makes my skin feel like it's being attacked. My feet, ankles, and lower legs are no longer swollen; in fact, I marveled just tonight over how thin the ankles looked and how pink and healthy the feet are looking. My skin is improving. I no longer itch incessantly, and I no longer use lotions. I can breathe easily without wheezing, and I no longer have to use inhalers (rescue or steroids)--with my doctor's blessings. I no longer crave sugary things or carbohydrates in general. My cholesterol and triglycerides have normalized as well, and my blood pressure has dropped 45 points on the systolic pressure. I haven't felt this good in decades. Life is definitely now worth living, and I no longer pine for death to take me just to get rid of the chronically-ill feeling. For the first time in over a decade, my skin is rosy and my eyes are bright.When I first read the reviews for this book, I sort of pooh-pooed them. But then, I figured that if I could garner just one piece of information that would help me and make me feel better, then the price of the book could be justified. I am Disabled because of the chronic illnesses and am on a fixed income. Those chronic illnesses are miraculously going away.Life is good again. This is a sensible book, folks, and touts dietary eating habits that are easy to follow. I figured that it would cost me a great deal more money in groceries; however, I find that I am eating much less and am eating very high-quality foods and that my grocery bills are much less than before.I figured it this way: This book costs about as much as a copay for a trip to the doctor. What if the information in this book would drastically reduce the number of doctor visits and make me feel better as well? This is indeed what it has done for me.What do you have to lose? For me, I lost feeling miserable and quite sick all the time, 24/7. If you buy this book and follow the information, the only thing you will lose is that sick feeling. For me, it's been a God-send. (Psalm 150.)

I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than Barry Groves has done on exposing our various nutritional mythologies using information and research primarily from major medical journals but also historical information, basic biochemistry, and common sense. It is well written and easy to read while covering an immense amount of material. Even if it does not convince you of what the author believes constitutes truly healthy eating (although that's hard to imagine!) it should at the very least convince you that what you've been taught is a 'healthy diet' must be thoroughly questioned! It might also galvanize you to spread the word in an effort to help change what doctors and governments consider good nutrition and helpful strategies for preventing and combatting illnesses. Barry Groves makes a powerful argument that we cannot afford the direction in which we are going with our health care systems -- people are getting sicker and costs are skyrocketing.

The majority of people in the U.S. are ok with being brainwashed, or at least lack the energy and motivation to alter their habits. This resource gets to the foundation of what we are taught and why and shows that the reason we are so sick as a society is because it is very profitable to certain industries. These industries use their wealth, power, and recognizability to perpetuate false information through advertising and bureacratic ties. They also know that most people do not have the time, energy, and other resources necessary to investigate personal health. The end result if you do not investigate health on your own is sickness, disease and pain. If you seek to avoid this fate, Barry Groves and the Weston A. Price association, where he is an honorary board member (I believe this means he is UNPAID) are great resources to explore. Trick and Treat is rather comprehensive as the title may not suggest. Great resource. Thank you for your deep research and effort, Barry.

I have read other books on high fat/protein low carbohydrates way of eating. The other books gave reasons for eating in this way related to our anthropological past. Our genes have not changed over thousands of years and our ancestors ate a meat diet. This book gave me more information and insite into this method of eating. It provided an astounding number of diseases and maladies all related to eating a late 20th century developed "healthy diet" of low fat/high carbohydrates. This should be a must read for anyone on the fence whether to dump the carbs or stick with current conventional wisdom. I believe we should all dump the carbs, especially now with the health care debate raging. Barry does a great job explaining way we need to lower our carbohydrate consumption in an easy to understand and example loaded way.

This is a great book for what's gone wrong with nutrition, and how it got this way. Many references are American, but there's good correlation with research and information from Britain which was heretofore unknown to me. Great reading for those courageous enough to look outside our neat little dietary boxes.

About the Author

Firooz Zahedi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1949 and attended secondary school in England before moving to the United States in 1969 to study at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. After a short career as a diplomat in Washington, DC, he went on to attend the Corcoran School of Art and graduated with a degree in Visual Communication. He became a photographer for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine and moved to Los Angeles in 1978 with his friend, Elizabeth Taylor, as her personal photographer on a film set. In 1990 he signed a contract with Vanity Fair. His editorial work has appeared internationally on the covers of other magazines such as Vogue, GQ, Town&Country, Glamour, InStyle, Time, Architectural Digest, and Entertainment Weekly. His portraits, fine art photographs, and collages have been shown in prominent galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Basel, London, and Dubai as well as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach. Firooz and his wife divide their time between their homes in Los Angeles, New York, and Palm Beach.

What a fantastic book! This is not merely a picture book, although the pics are very personal and plentiful. The story is one from the heart of a very close friend, and provides insight into one of the world's last film legends. A bawdy, lovable woman that lived an amazing life. I have thoroughly enjoyed Zahedi's homage to Elizabeth Taylor, and highly recommend it.

Although the story is very sad and deserves an entire different review, my comments are focused on the writing of it. There are a multitude of grammar, syntax, spelling and typing mistakes that greatly affect its presentation. The story lacks flow and is shy of a negligent journalistic presentation. Editing is an almost non-existing factor.

Every teen girl? NEEDS to read this book. It is a stark reminder that our world IS NOT safe and that even in small town America? Horrible crimes like human trafficking CAN and do happen. This book is raw with emotion and told in the very thoughts and words of the victim herself, a young, vulnerable, naive and trusting teen. Gritty, brutally honest and tragic...One error of poor judgement? Will forever change this young life.

The evil that human beings are capable of is mind boggling. I don't understand it. This book brings home the reality of sex trafficking. I recommend it to anyone trying to help the victims as it gives a very clear picture of what it is really like and the pure hell they go through.

The story needs to be told and it's terrifying! However, as others have said, there are many typos, grammatical errors and a general lack of proofing that diminish the pleasure and ease of reading it!

The book offers a short and informative look into sex slavery an human trafficking. It tells a story of nativity and hope. It is one girl's determination to beat the odds and right a wrong. I pray she is in s better place today.

I'm glad I read this book. I'M WONDERING HOW the average person could help stop this? This book gives us a look at the depravity of man. Every person should should read this book! I gave this rating because of the content. More people need to learn about what is going on, and someone needs to get people organized to catch those who are running these slave rings.

The story is just entertaining and "naughty" enough to hold young people's attention while the educational value slowly, well ... bubbles up!

Bruno Scrosati is Senior Professor at the University of Rome La Sapienza. His interest in battery safety goes back to the work with the very large battery safety testing center of the ZSW. In 2004 he founded the FC&Battery consulting office FCBAT; furthermore he is a senior professor at Ulm University.

It isn't so much about desire - feelings of love are guides to helps us identify and keep an evolutionary fit mate. It is really about the strategies used to battle other suitors and attract mates.The material can be found other places - mating is a common topic of evolutionary psychology books. The presentation seems repetitive; the same basic strategies have implications for finding, keeping, and leaving a mate and also explain how we pursue casual or extramarital sex. What makes this book worth reading, above similar books, is Buss test the theories by tying them to survey results. The theories explain the results.For humans, much of the competing is verbal - using social influence to degrade competitors. This is a minor topic.The focus is on how we select mates so that our genes are given every possible advantage to dominate future generations. Men and women have competing goals. Men want to maximize the quantity and quality of their mates and invest as little as possible in their offspring. Women want to maximize the quality of their mates and extracts as much parental investment from the fathers as possible.Mating customs - monogamy, marriage - are an uneasy truce between the sexes. Monogamy - for example - benefits average to below average men the most. Marriage and child support laws are a way of codifying parental investment.Despite our traditions of monogamy and marriage, we constantly try to assess our value as a mate. Your reproductive value and your behavior are not static. Decisions to leave mates are based upon assessment of relative value. Casual sex and affairs are attempts to assess our value.

David Buss's book is great. He lays out a very clear and coherent theory behind how human sexuality evolved and compares our sexuality with that of other species.A must read for anyone who is interested in human nature!

Had to buy this for a class. Interesting read, Buss discusses things in everyday language while keeping you engrossed in the story. I learned some interesting things about mating and sexuality. The one drawback is that there were a couple chapters I felt were too long and a bit boring. Overall, a good read.

Intriguing non-fiction for those interested in psychology, especially having to do with evolution and mating. Lots of interesting facts and studies. You'll learn a lot about your species and yourself. Buss does tend to be a little repetitive with his writing at times and some topics are over done, but that is often how scientific writing works: say what you're going to say, say it, then say what you've said. You can definitely see this method in his writing but, overall it is well written and kept my attention. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I think it's important for us all to know what science has learned about our own species, our own minds and subconciences.

David Buss is absolutely amazing. No, this is not a self help guide for learning how to pick up or attract the opposite sex. There is no advice here on how to handle your wife or girlfriend. This is also not a polemic rant on either why women are supposed to stay in the kitchen or how men and women are still unequal. This is pure, unadultered, exhaustively researched and scientific information on differences between men and women, as well as similarities, as well as what drives us to seek out sex and why.I was intrigued by this book and its premise after reading some articles the author wrote as sources for a paper I did on attraction. Purchasing this book was not a disappoint at all, and I only hope his other books are just as insightful, informative and well-written as this one.

Wow, this book changes the I interpret interaction with the opposite sex. I loved David Buss when I was in college, he was one of my favorite researchers. Whether you love or hate the results of the clinical studies he references, this book is food for thought and does not disappoint. It may not be written like a thriller, but the facts are so interesting that it makes for a compelling read.

I like to consider myself an amateur art connoisseur, but maybe I am unworthy of such a title since I fail to comprehend how contemporary works can fetch more than a medieval masterpiece at auction. The author of this book has provided me much clarity on the absurdity of art values. His writing style is entertaining, intriguing, and practical.I plan on acquiring his more recent works (2 books as of this review date), which appear to expound on this subject.

I am not in any way involved in Art nor do I own any art and enjoyed this book tremendously. Being in real estate and finance made this book ever more compelling to read. There are a lot of parallels in the psychology and economics of trading modern art, real estate and any other alternative asset which makes this book a great way to force lateral thinking between two, arguably, unrelated sectors. I couldn't recommend this book more to anyone involved in finance or the trading of securities and assets. I wish this author wrote about other industries as the book details just about every revenue stream, challenge and opportunity in the dealer, auction house market. Anyhow, do read this book. It is quite good.

I have recently read a number of books on art collecting and more specifically, contemporary art collecting. The $12 Million Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art, as compared to other books on this subject, provides a 360 degree view of the contemporary art market. The book provides a view of the market from the perspective of the collector, dealer and auction house and really gives the reader a sense of how the market operates and the pros and cons of this unique manner in which art is bought and sold. I enjoyed this book so much that I decided to purchase Mr. Thompson’s more recent book on the same topic - The Supermodel and the Brillo Box: Back Stories and Peculiar Economics from the World of Contemporary Art.

Written by an economist who had access to the most important actors (collectors, dealers, auctioneers, curators, art fair organizers...) while doing his research, this book is an in-depth study of the way the contemporary art market functions, the part played by auction houses, dealers, big collectors, museums, the sometimes incestuous relationship that exists between all of them, how art is priced, how auctions are organized (on and off the scene), how gallery shows are sold (or pre-sold), the importance of art branding in creating an artist's reputation (the brand being the auction house, the gallery, the artist himself, a museum, or even a collector if he is important enough)and, most importantly, how these art brands are created. One insightful conclusion is that the art market, and contemporary art in particular, is as much brand-driven as any other high-end luxury market. Through case studies (the dealers Larry Gagosian or Jay Joplin, the artists Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Jeff Koons or Andy Warhol, the auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's, the collectors Charles Saatchi or Ronald Lauder...) and broader considerations on the overall economics of art, the author manages to write a book which is at the same time well informed (with some slight spelling mistakes though, e.g. the Portuguese collector Jose Berardo becoming "Joe Bernardo", or the dealer Faggionato sometimes mistakenly spelt "Faccionato"), to the point and easy to read. Among the more than twenty books available on this topic on Amazon's, this one is the best in my opinion (and I've read quite a few...).

Probably the most interesting conclusion I draw is based on my new understanding of why Stephen A Cohen is such a good and successful art collector / investor. When one achieves a high status in the contemporary art world, as has Stephen A Cohen, he gets 1) first looks at hot artists at discounted prices and 2) has the ability to turn a no-name artist into something more by simply buying his/her work. Thus, he easily gets the best deals and investment opportunities within the Contemporary art world. I liken this to insider trading in the world of stock trading, but in the contemporary art market, unlike the stock market, insider trading is legal - so no wonder he like the contemporary art market so much. To the victor go the spoils!

This is a very well documented encapsulation of all that is horrifyingly wrong with the art market today, esp in the USA and London where quality and talent is totally subjugated to and trumped by sensation, trendiness and outrage. No one is taught craft anymore with the result that the discerning eye in art has ceased to exist. Where is Robert Hughes when we need him? Don Thompson is doing a great job filling his shoes. The emperors are starkers, and the Gagosians of the world are, to my mind, making a fortune off of it. Caveat emptor !!!!

You don't need to buy this book. It only contains all the things you already know and do, and hoped no one would ever find out.Buy this book!

The Milat case was one of Australia's most notorious, and for good reason. The author gives a concise summary of the investigation, arrest and trial, without dwelling overmuch on Milat's earlier life and crimes. He then meanders off into descriptions of other similar crimes and suspects, without much justification for this except that Milat at one time or another was considered as a suspect. Small then returns to the main theme by describing one to three disappearances and deaths for which Milat certainly does seem a solid suspect.A chapter is devoted to rebuttal of the author's critics and to the demolition of various false theories and Milat apologists, of which there seems no shortage. Small also devotes a chapter to the popular theory that Milat did not act alone.Worth a read if you are unfamiliar with the whole evil Milat saga, but not otherwise.

Even now, years later, the words "Backpacker Murders" sends chills throughout the Australian population. At the time everyone thought that things like that didn't happen in Australia. This is the true story of how Australia lost its innocence and how the hunt to catch a serial killer was front page news.I found the behind the scenes information fascinating. The book is sensible and straight forward in stating the facts. A really interesting read.

This book is by the police officer who managed the large and complex investigative task force into the Backpacker Murders in Australia. It is a detailed and comprehensive account of a successful investigation leading to a conviction which withstood many appeals. The author is modest about his considerable success and makes the task seem easy, although that was clearly not the case. It provides details of the assistance received from sources outside the police, including predictions as to Milat's personality by a psychiatrist. It is essential reading for anyone interested in serial homicide generally and in Milat in particular.

Very concise publication of the exacting police work carried out in major crimes. Understanding the intrigues involved and the temptations to make it "fit" because a gut feeling teases you. What dedication by many officers who slaved over painstaking data to bring a conclusion to one of the greatest manhunts ever undertaken.A greater understanding of the police and their humanity. Whilst the subject matter is at times horrific, it is a great read.

Disappointing and not a very comprehensive report from the perspective of the investigative police.Shows ineptness at the time and lack of coordination of the NSW Police..Sins of the brother a better and more complete book.

Didn't like the fact that Clive went of and discussed a load of other stories. Don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining. Also, I don't really think there was a lot there that i hadn't read before somewhere else.

This is a story that many Australians will always remember as the most horrific murderer we have ever known . To hear a first account of the investigation and how they put they're lives on hold to put this man away

I thoroughly enjoyed the read, it was well written. Unfortunately I was supposed to be studying but went to sleep reading this over a week, and had the best nightmares. Well done Clive.
