First of all, I have to take my hat off to the cover designer for SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES by Lucy Coleman as it so beautiful and I found myself going back to look at it time after time. And I am delighted to say that the story inside is just as stunning!What do you do when you're a romance author who doesn't believe in romance anymore? Well, that is the situation that Brie finds herself in after she is dumped by her celebrity boyfriend. Needing to write another bestseller Brie just cannot find the spark that always came so easily to her before but it's not surprising considering all of the online abuse and media intrusion that she has experienced. But after her loved ones give her a stern talking to, Brie knows that she needs to do something to get herself out of this funk that she has fallen into and soon she has more than one book idea brewing. When the opportunity to teach in Italy presents itself, Brie jumps at it with both hands as who wouldn't be inspired by the beauty and culture of the Lakes and when she meets Arran Jamieson, romance may just jump off the page and into her life ...The setting is stunning in SUMMER ON THE ITALIAN LAKES and Lucy Coleman has a real talent for painting the soul of a place and making you desperate to visit there yourself. The characters are well-developed and engaging and I was rooting for Brie from the very beginning and by the end felt like she was an old friend. Her first impressions of her host are strained, but with a stunning backdrop against Lake Garda, the trip not only triggers her creativity but opens her mind and heart to find love.Although the main focus is on Brie and Arran, I devoured all the information surrounding the writing retreat classes. If you, like me have sat down to write, you'll love all the details about the writing process the author poured into this part of the narrative. It's unexpected, yet played a huge part in my overall enjoyment along with the antics of the protagonists and their guests.I enjoyed how Brie took stock of her life and let go of her inhibitions to explore the opportunities presented to her, including Arran. As the hero, I always appreciate getting to know ones perceived as difficult, until we learn more about them. It's exciting when the attraction becomes more than a furtive glance and a slight touch. Complimenting the tentative relationship is the stunning Italian Lakes backdrop and the tantalising descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of the area.Around the 75-80% mark, the narrative dragged on and ran out of steam. Until this point, I adored the time the protagonists were in Italy and remained invested in them after the plot shifted back to the UK. However, the additional plot-lines concentrating on secondary characters took away the focus from Brie and Arran in what I can only think is a way of building interest for a future novel? If this is the case, it didn't work for me as I didn't connect sufficiently to those characters and it cast a shadow over what had been until that point a fabulous read.Overall, many high points make this a lovely, fascinating romance; two very different authors finding a common ground between them, the inclusion of the writing retreat class information and lastly, Lake Garda's beauty and culture. This is not a good book on Bohemian style. In fact this was mostly a book about two artists and their homes. The homes were not my idea of Bohemian style. Very disappointed in this purchase. I want my money back.

This book is very interesting because it shows how to make creative use of secondhand and artisict pieces of furniture and artifacts. Lots of photos to indulge yourself with creative thinking. Being new to hospice (RN) i wanted to have resources that would be helpful, i found this book to be VERY useful and help me understand more about hospice and end of life care

These are wonderful little books for hospice nurses - bought enough to give to each of our nurses in the hospice agency

This book is full of excellent content. However, I left it in my car, and when I took it out to use as a reference, the pages fell out! I am very disappointed, as this book could have been extremely useful. I can't even get a replacement due to company policy!

Three stars for the small print that I almost can't read without extra light and I have my glasses on. I would be willing to pay more for a book that I didn't need a magnifying glass to read. However, there is a lot of good information in it.

Probably the best book social dynamics in the workplace I have ever read. Alas, it's the only one that I've read.There are many books on management, leadership and social dynamics. I've a few. I know people who have read a lot more. This book cuts across topics discussed in multiple books in much shorter language. This book also ties together topics that other books do not. I, personally, found it easier to read everything from one book quickly rather than figure it out from matching up several ones.Fast read. Well written. Gets to the point. Has a very modern philosophy on teams.----AddendumHOWEVER the authors of this book focus primarily on one style of project work, that being working on teams. In fact they focus almost exclusively on a concept I know as "self-directed teams."Other ways groups of people can work together is rarely discussed.Also some of the recommendations will likely not be possible to implement depending on your position in the company. For example, a team manager may not have a say on who is welcome on his/her team. If someone is not working out, he/she may not have the option of getting rid of that person. Also, people who very obviously should not belong on the same team may be forced into that work arrangement despite everyone's protests. HR may do that. It's nice to read that that team won't work, but ... everyone knew that already.

In short - it is a book on how to treat people. Written for managers in software companies (can be generalized to all companies which expect their employees to do creative work), in my opinion it can be read just by anybody, even if only to raise awareness of toxic workplaces.The authors have written â€œPeoplewareâ€ basing on their vast consulting experience for software firms, as well as their experiments and survey-based research. The bookâ€™s title signifies the importance of employees; the prevalent message is that most of problems in software projects are not related to technology, but relations between people. Oh, the human nature is so pathetic and mediocre...Overall the book is very approachable and an easy and refreshing read. Also I like the fact it has short straight-to-the-point chapters which makes the reader quickly get the message and make it a true pleasure to read.Fully recommended!

Since I was a youngster I have been fascinated with Ancient Egyptian mythology, hieroglyphics, history, photographs and art. The first room I would want to visit at the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) was the Egyptian (although in recent years I do believe some of the artifacts should be returned to Egypt but that's a personal point of view). I have watched so many documentaries and movies pertaining to Egypt. When I saw this book I was thrilled and thought this is going to be great, however I was somewhat disappointed in the work. The parts about the myths, legends and etc was interesting but overall the work read like a book report, therefore sadly I have to admit I did not enjoy it. I think I would have given an extra point if the author had listed some sources for where the information he used came from, I am ever the skeptic.

This book focuses on the gods, monsters, and mortals of ancient Egypt thereby.helping the reader gain insight into the people and culture of their ancient society. The author details the gods of Egypt, the most powerful of which was Ra the creator and sun god and the eight original gods of Egypt that were created out of chaos and than moved to the high heavens. Four Egyptian gods actually lived among the people for many years and had important influnce over daily life. They were Osirirus, Isis, Seth, and Horus and the mythology surrounding them is extremly interesting and colorful. The only true Eqyptian monstor was a gigantic serpant of chaos, known as Apep or Apophus. The gods, primarily Ra fought daily battles to keep chaos in check, which speaks volumns regarding the desire for order in ancient Egypt. The author discusses a number of mortals who deeply influnced Egyptian culture. My favorite was Ramses II, also know as The Great and King of Kings who served as Pharaoh for 57 years, and died at the age of 93. I think that many readers will enjoy reading this well written study of Ancient Egypt because its heritage remains vital to the understanding of who we are as a species.

The story of NBA basketball player Klay Thompson is a valuable read, not because he had to over come hardship or tragedy to get where he is today, but because of the quiet and calm manner in which he has learned and processed the rules and become the success he is today.Klay Thompson was a player who listened to his father, learned his lessons well and has his head on straight. It's refreshing to see an NBA star who learned how to budget and live well within his means from his parents. So many players go bankrupt when their careers are over because they never learned the basic lessons of saving money and budgeting.Klay is also a role model in that he does not get in trouble. There was one recorded incident in college that made such an impact on Klay that he has kept his nose clean and has lived an incredibly tame life for a basketball player.For these reasons alone Klay is a wonderful inspiration and a role model for younger children. This is a great book for adults and children to read to get to know more about Klay, where he came from and what he is about.

"Klay Thompson: The Incredible Story" is all about the up and coming guard of the Golden State Warriors who is the model of hard work and ethics in the world of professional basketball. Klay Thompson is an amazing basketball shooter and his story can inspire a lot of people. He reached the high point of his career very fast. He was able to make amazing three-pointers. He signed a contract until the end of 2015 for the 2014-2015 NBA season. This is a captivating book about his childhood and career. I really love how a simple young man transformed into a successful well-known basketball star.

Furthermore, the wedding and the Scottish Games are scheduled on the same day!There's a lot of furor over an reenactment being done at the Games by a professor who has very iffy historic 'facts', has a long string of 'romances' with young women, and is not very nice. Picketing is being threatened.A young man and his grandfather come to the Emporium and want to put a display of swords and knives used in Scotland through the battles and years. She permits it, but puts a curtain behind the display so that the items won't be stolen.The owner of the land where the Games were going to be held cancels, as he's concerned about the possible ruckus, and they move to a resort up the hill.The professor is murdered with a broadsword and Mac is being questioned, as he was the last to see theman. Vi falls to pieces.The story is complex, very interesting, and the solution is surprising. (Vi does get her way about the wedding!)I read a hardback copy, 277 pages with a one page epilogue.Read it and enjoy!

Liss solves another murder mystery. This time it was obvious who the killer was, since Liss kept insisting that it was impossible.

This book was very pedestrian. Not something would normally read, but it was a book group choice. It did not make me interested in reading any other works by this author. It had no depth, very little character development, very little suspense and, overall, was not an enjoyable read.

Having just attended our daughter's wedding, I was in the mood for a murder mystery set around a wedding. Ms. Dunnett wrote so clearly that I felt I was present at the vows.Our Scottish sleuth, Josie MacCrimmon is reeling, not just from her Mother's interference in her wedding plans, but from sensing tension between her parents. The tension grows until it blows when Mrs. MacCrimmon's husband, Don is accused of murdering her former college love affair, Professor A. Leon Palsgrave, who is chairing the Medieval Scottish Conclave at the Western Maine Highland Games.This Professor Palsgrave has not only upset Liss' wedding venue, the games have to move to 'The Spruces' which is Moosetookalook's fancy hotel, but has also caused protestors to pop out to contest a reenactment of a battle between Henry Sinclair and the Native American Indians that may or may not have actually happened. Professor Palsgrave is also known as a womanizer so when he pops up dead by broadsword, the suspect pool is full.Liss finds herself having to accept her Mother's plans for the wedding and work on making sure her father is not arrested.The novel ticks us down days by days until the wedding and games. That kept the tension up. I found the details of a Scottish Medieval wedding fascinating and colorful. I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the epilogue.

This is one of my favorite series. This particular book was not the best of the series. I didn't care who killed the professor because he was obnoxious. Also, Liss's mom took over her wedding, and that made me nervous. I hate when main characters are bullied by another character. I liked that Liss and Dan finally got married. I just liked some of the other books in the series better than this one.

I like this kind of detective books, Kaitlyn Dunnett is a great writer, she keeps the characters believable.

I enjoyed the characters. The book was not as predictable as I expected. I liked the setting and plot. A pretty good mystery.

This has become one of my favorite series and each new book is much anticipated. Love the small town atmosphere and the premise of the series. Keep them coming.

I knew nothing about USSR/SOVIET UNION/RUSSIAN history until I read a book about the German Invasion, "LENINGRAD-THE EPIC SIEGE 1941-1944", by Anna Reid. A tremendous book, which was the beginning of my obsession with life under Josef Stalin, a most brutal Dictator, right up next to Mao and Hitler, in the 20th Century. I needed to know more, and I can tell you that this is, by far, one of the greatest books I've Ever read, regardless of the genre. I'm no fancy critic, but if you really want to know what tortures and torments Josef Stalin and his "henchmen", for lack of a better word, perpetrated on his own people, and the people of other, surrounding countries, you must read this book. I was particularly interested in reading about the GULAG, a word that literally struck terror into me while I was growing up. Which shows just how much a word such as GULAG, or Siberia, could scare a girl who was 10yrs old in 1975. Author Anne Applebaum has written a very detailed, yet human book about the Concentration Camps, Forced Labor Camps, Prison Camps, and all the regular prisons, too. All I can really say is how profoundly this book has affected my life. There are so many stories, right out of survivors mouths, that I would have to re-read a page, here and there, just to make sure I had read it correctly. Also, many archives became available for people to research, and Ms. Applebaum does a magnificent job of taking these records of the atrocities, inflicted on at least 20 million people, and writing about them in such a way you are literally hooked from page one. It is worth every single moment of your time to read it. Incomprehensible and shocking sound like compliments when trying to describe this amazing literary feat. Ms. Applebaum received a Pulitzer Prize for this masterpiece, and deservedly so. Every school should be using this as a classroom text. This is not an easy book to read, and Iâ€™m sure it was much harder to write in such a way that the reader would read it. It is also not a mere listing of the number who died or concise descriptions of the tortures employed for whatever purpose, although those matters are discussed if you are so interested.It is an overview of the â€˜staat in staatâ€™ of the Gulag; once you â€˜enteredâ€™ the organization, Soviet public law (such as it was) became irrelevant. You were no longer a Soviet citizen; you were a denizen of the Gulag. And under Stalin, your arrest was a purely arbitrary matter; you might have as easily been hit by lightning, and for the same â€˜reasonâ€™.But before a reader gets to the exploration of the subject, the author makes the introduction interesting on its own; Ms. Applebaum examines the asymmetry of Western response to Hitler, a universally despised mass murderer, compared to Stalin, who, by direct order, starved more Ukrainians to death than the number of Jews Hitler managed to kill in his â€˜industrializedâ€™ murder machines. Even now, people in the EU and the US who would never hint of a defense of Hitler will dismiss Stalinâ€™s crimes as trivial, and often claim his show trials as, well, maybe justified. Those need to read Judt in â€œPost Warâ€, (certainly no â€˜capitalist toolâ€™), who, examining all of the evidence, has to admit that â€˜central planning leads to centralized murderâ€™. But there remain in the West those who still, in spite of all evidence continue to hope otherwise.Specifically, she mentions Heidegger, whose early flirtation with the Nazis ruined his reputation, while Sarte was given a pass for taking an â€˜omelets and broken eggsâ€™ position, as was Camus, not to mention that pathetic excuse for a journalist William Durante, who originated that despicable phrase.She excuses that asymmetry in a way which seems far too kind; simply assuming the Western left was forgivably stupid. We continue to live with that stupidity, and I do not see it as forgivable; â€œUseful idiotsâ€ seems more than appropriate here.Regardless, we are led through the Gulag from arrest to, sometimes, release. Yes, many were released, quite a few near death to die shortly after to avoid another death stat on the campâ€™s record. And then quite often those released were released at the camp entrance with no resources to return to their homes, nor â€˜cleanâ€™ papers. Some few who were released were given official â€˜forgivenessâ€™ and, if they could find their way â€˜homeâ€™, might return to a normal life. Suffice to say, the system is revealed as it was: Slave labor, under horrible conditions, and with scant chance of return to normality.Not surprisingly, it seems the cruelty was (largely) not directed from Moscow, but was simply a product of the same dystopian Soviet system which produced thousands of shoes, all of the same size; there was no incentive for the workers to do other than the least they could. Ms. Applebaum quotes Solzhenitsyn pointing out that the zeks went thirsty not by design, but because the guards would have to fetch the water and carry it back to the zeks; theyâ€™d rather take the time for a smoke. Indeed, the banality of evil.There is far more in the detailed examination of the cultures within the camps (and prisons) zeks, trustys, guards, administrators, and finally an accounting of the delayed release of the political prisoners; it is all worth reading as it clearly defines the Soviet leadershipâ€™s dismissal of the matter; the Gulag was part and parcel of the evil of communism.For those still trying to put lipstick on the commie pig, Iâ€™m sure youâ€™ll find details to dispute. For the rest of us, it is far beyond worthy of reading.

My wife and I have been surveying Russian history, and we came across this excellent, deep, thoughtful, and comprehensive book. This is an excellent book to read before reading Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, because Applebaum presents the history of the Gulag's development and implementation in a way that amplifies Solzhenitsyn.We would be very interested in Applebaum's opinions on Kotkin's recent book on Stalin, which also covers the period of the creation and implementation of the Gulag.Applebaum's writing reminded us of another excellent writer from our college days, Jessica Tuchman. This was an excellent and engrossing book.

I ordered this book at the same time as the authorâ€™s Red Famine, a look at Stalinâ€™s largely manufactured famine centered in the Ukraine. I didnâ€™t much enjoy Red Famine and wasnâ€™t holding out much hope for this work. The authorâ€™s writing style in Red Famine was not reader friendly and I found it a chore to get through. However, for some reason, I tolerated this work much better. Perhaps it was the subject matter, which seemed to allow for more interesting reading.As the title suggests, this work deals with the history of the Soviet gulag system of penal camps and relocation centers from the 1920s to their discontinuance in the 1950s. Unlike Red Famine, this book contains numerous personal stories and observations by those that survived the camps. As a result, it was easier to read and far more captivating than Red Famine. I can recommend this work for anyone interested in the subject matter, or Soviet history in general.
